New to Android. Quick battery drain!?

Phone came out of the box yesterday Cyb3rGlitch. Updated situation: I am using the LG exactly the same way as the iPhone in that wifi, bluetooth, sync etc are all turned off until necessary. Given that I wasn't gaming or browsing on it at all I was really pissed at the battery decline. On XDA forums I found an app called Better Battery Stats. Installed it and found that the phone was being prevented from going into deep sleep for some reason. I uninstalled all the apps that I got to make my battery last longer and the numbers showed that the CPU was now entering deep sleep. However, there are still times where the phone is being pulled up into higher CPU states. The culprit according to better battery stats is a kernel process called baseband_xmm_power and the amount of time it is active corresponds to difference in times between the phone being awake and awake with screen on. Going by the name I am inferring that this process could be responsible for controlling the power of the modem. Given that I know that I have a weak signal I think what's happening is that the threshold for increasing the modem power is being crossed often and ultimately this process is trying to do it's job and instituting a Wakelock to make sure it can do it's job without CPU going to sleep. Because it's happening a lot end result is a significant portion of time that the CPU is consuming power. I am currently on LiveConnected and while this didn't pose a problem on the iPhone I think switching back to Telstra would help alleviate this final drain on my battery. There was a noticeable difference in Cell signal strength going from Telstra to LC even on the iPhone. For those who are having similar battery woes, please look up this app in XDA developers (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809). I used the apk as I found the latest one not to work. Thank you for your help guys! Please post if you have anything to add or to comment on my understanding of the situation.
  2. Hey guys, just picked up an LG Optimus 4x. I know it doesn't have the best battery life of the quad core phones but this is ridiculous. Been an iOS user and this is the first android phone so any diagnostic help would be amazing. Currently after 25 minutes on battery from 100% -> 86% drop. Battery use details: Screen 32%; Cell Standby 29%; Wifi 23% I'm thinking this is a bit of a steep drop! Currently connected only to 2G as having 3G on makes it drain even faster because it keeps losing connection and polling like there is no tomorrow (We're talking 30-40% of idle time with no signal if 3G is left on.) Any advice in identifying apps/strategies to control of this or help in finding out if this is a faulty unit would be much appreciated. Thank you!

    Current state of SSD reliability

Thank you so much for your replies guys. Made up my mind as to what to do. @GhostFaceKilla My motherboard does have SATA III but it is a weird setup because from what I understand of the manual if I connect a SATA III device then the PCI express port becomes slower. Aside from stability issues this is the other reason why I was going to stick to SATA II. I am going to be installing Win 7 64-bit Home Premium.
  4. I've been wanting for a while now to finally transition to Windows 7 on my desktop but a combination of time and monetary constraints didn't really give me an opportunity to do so. I wanted to pick up a Spinpoint F3 and go from there but HDD prices having gone the way they have, this doesn't seem as attractive any more. Thus, I decided to go the SSD route. I've done a bit of reading of the SSD threads here, on whirlpool and an article on Anandtech and I decided to go with a 120GB OCZ Vertex II. A few questions remain however and I wanted to draw on the experiences of the SSD users of Atomic. 1) Sandforce controllers are said to be the most reliable in most places but there appears to be a BSOD bug that seems to be affecting them. I understand that a firmware update has been released but did this fix the problem? How likely is it that I will have this problem? 2) If I don't want to worry should I just get an Intel 320 series drive (+$30)? Main system details: i5 750 Gigabyte P55A-UD3 4 GB Ram HIS HD5770 Your help will be much appreciated.

    HD Channels

Hey guys, just want to ask if anyone else has noticed that all the HD sport/programming has disappeared off FTA TV? I turned on the projector tonight and noticed that One HD isn't in HD. Hopman Cup broadcast is definitely not in HD. Even changed set top boxes to see if it was the box but it was the same result. Made me wonder why the hell they talk about all the HD when promoting free view now. Ridiculous.

    Opening PDFs in chrome window

Hey guys, found something weird occurring over the last few days. Chrome used to open PDF files in Acrobat in the browser window but a few days ago it went funny and now it looks like it is opening them via google docs instead. I would really like to reverse this but have no idea why the hell it's happening or how to revert it. I've googled the hell out of it but everything I found is about how to make PDFs open in Google Docs. Has anyone else noticed this?

Issue placing calls with iPhone 3GS

I've been having a bit of an ongoing issue with my 3GS and can't seem to figure out whether it's a network problem or a phone problem. On occasion, especially when the phone has just been sitting there a while, when I try to place a call the calling screen appears with "calling" displayed but the call never seems to get connected. I hit end call and tap the number again and sometimes it works but often I have to turn airplane mode on and off and then the call connects. Sometimes when I hit end call the first time the phone just freezes at that screen and keeps trying to "end" the call in the background even if I hit the home button. I'm afraid I don't know what to make of the affair and was hoping you guys might be able to make heads or tails of it. Phone details: iPhone 3GS (16 GB) - iOS 4.0, jailbroken but no Cydia apps installed like SBsettings or Winterboard.

Why the case against vaccinating your kids is weak

Out of curiosity what are people in this thread, who are advocating being informed, defining as "research"? Edit: I guess more specifically I am asking what's your general method when you go out to find information on vaccines. Where do you begin, what sort of resources etc.

    Pharmaceuticals question...

Off topic, but I get the natural form where ever possible (from the White Willow), seems to work better too :) It'll be better at gastric irritation too.

    Graphics Card Comparison

When comparing graphics cards I usually go to Tom's Hardware because they publish a "Best Graphics Cards For The Money" every month or so where they highlight the best card for a given price point. They also include a graphics card hierarchy chart that is quite handy. Based on that chart the 5770 looks to come out on top of the 8800 Ultra but as they say in the introduction there may not be a noticeable difference between the two when in use. As far as I can see it doesn't look like that particular card has Eyefinity either, so I reckon you can make a decision based on pretty much any other factor that you want. But based on the fact that the 5770 is a DirectX 11 card, I'd probably pick that.

An autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance"?

Made a quick punnet square to show it better. Kothos had it right the previous page. Autosomal = Not affecting the sex chromosomes. Males and females equally affected. Recessive = 2 copies of faulty gene needed as the normal copy will compensate in carriers.
