  1. Hey guys!, Its been a long while since I've posted a thread in the PC Gaming section of atomic, but I thought it was worth a shot... I'm not really sure where to start here, so bear with me: Recently i've been scouring the internet for a MMORPG with a shred of decent PvP content. I'm certainly not the most easily satisfied customer... I have a pet hate for abilties with reduced effects in pvp, and pvp defense (resilience, for anyone who plays/ed wow). I don't even consider playing games that don't have real world pvp, as I dispise battleground and arena-like scenarios. I'm preferably looking for a game where gear doesn't mean as much as skill (yeah, i know i'm not likely to find an mmorpg like that). If anyone can think of anything that fits those criteria i'm certainly game for suggestions...

Are there any MMOs with decent PvP left?

I have to agree, twinked rifting was a big problem after the servers got up and running; but whilst everyone was still leveling and nobody was really 'twinked' rifting was some of the most fun I'd ever had in an MMO. I actually really like the AP system, you get alot more AP from PvP than you do from grinding monsters in the Abyss, once you've got reasonable gear at level 50 you could get 50k ap in an hour; and with the level 50 weapons costing just shy of a million AP that doesn't seem like a very significant 'farm' to me... not compared to some others anyway. Maybe I need to get to lvl 50, but I cant see how you can get 50k AP in an hour, unless you win constantly dredgion or something. In Fort Sieging ( I love it ), I get about 2k per successful fort siege. Also with AP you only get it if you kill something, so if you have a long fight and you lost, you dont get any AP :( which is a bit of a shame as a Templar. Not sure how heals work yet, need to play my Cleric in Fort Sieging when I get a chance. Well officer rank players yield around 5000 AP per kill, so you just look for, hunt down, and kill them xD I play a ranger, and even as asmo, ganking people is pretty easy.

If you ever got to the level where you could go rifting, they've practically rendred it impossible now. You basically take a 'portal' into your enemies leveling areas and run around a 'gank' (for lack of a better word) then whilst they're leveling. With the latest patch they've added an 80% damage reduction to the 'invading' party, to protect the 'defending' party from unwanted ganking. Sadly all the PvE Carebears and Kids complaining about getting ganked have ruined (what in my opinion) made the game a step above average. Its basically the same grind as wow is atm, but with more world pvp... and with all the servers being unbalanced in favor of a single faction, even that isn't fun.

As for wow being the only game to supply what I want, it never supplyed what I wanted... Vanilla was as close as it got, and even that wasn't ideal. I've been playing Aion recently, and up untill the latest patch it was a heap of fun. Eve pvp was too 'automated' for me... all you had to do was lock on, select orbit and whoevers ship was fitted better won.

I tried AoC when it was first released, but my latency always seemed to be my downfall... Missing combo moves simply because the game didn't register that I'd pressed an ability in time. As for an MMO WWII game, I assume its FPP? 1: I do want an RPG, its the genre of game I enjoy the most. 2: I understand that skill is a major factor in most games, but there are also situations where gear allows people to beat even the most skilled of players. (Before the release of TBC in WoW it was possible for a naked character to beat one in BiS gear in 1v1 PvP, Something like that is what I would like.) 3: PvP Only is the exact oposite of what I want, I want intergrated PvPvE; Ideally no instanced locations, no unaccessable locations, no battlegrounds, no arenas.

Heh, Eve was interesting... I've never been one to really 'like' games set in present, or furture timesets though. I much prefer medievil games.

Free till level 10 you say? I might have to look into that... A friend of mine tried WAR and after a month or two decided there weren't enough players. *shrug*

What's wrong with Steam this time?

I can't say I've ever experienced such problems with steam... well, noting beyond that I receive everywhere else... -_- Did you try purchasing with your CC through PayPal or something like that? Should it not work directly, I would always give PP a go... it could simply be a problem with steam being unable to charge CCs.

    WoW questions

I don't really think there is a whole lot I can add to this conversation, that hasn't already been said... The RAF (Recruit a Friend) flying mount requires that the recruited account (In this case, your wife's account) activate two months of game time; before being awarded to the recruiting account (Your account). Your existing characters: Mages are some of the strongest characters in the game at the moment, and since the release of WOTLK (Wrath of the Lich King) are incredibly easy to level. Rogues are in a similar situation, very strong, very easy to level. If your wife has never played WoW before, It probably isn't the best idea to hook her up with a 'key' party role (Tank or Healer), instead I would suggest a Retribution Paladin; In my experience, one of the strongest (and easiest) characters to level. (Somebody will probably disagree with me here, but i've stood by the opinion that a Tank/DPS/Healer Hybrid class with plate armour and a shield is certainly one of the strongest combination a game can have.) If you intend to make a new character with your wife (and she is playing a healer), I would suggest that you play a Tanking Paladin (Should you want to play a tank) as the utility that being a hybrid brings to the class makes them... not essential, but highly beneficial. If your wife follows a different route, playing a DPS class, I would suggest you playing a Discipline (Healing) Priest; A very strong single target healer, but also a very capable group healer... Abilities like Power Word: Shield make leveling as a pair, or in a small group very easy. If anyone wants to question my recommendations, or provide amendments... feel free, I haven't played wow in just over a month, something could have changed. Edit: On the subject of servers... inexperienced, and new plays would probably enjoy 'Medium Population, Normal' servers more than any other... Once you're a little more experienced, you'll probably want to raid or pvp on a more populated server... and the most populated servers are most always PvP servers. Its not essential to PvP on such a server, but it can be forced upon you by other people... I originally played on the US server Skywall, but with the release of TBC (The Burning Crusade) moved over to the Oceanic server Frostmourne... Of all the servers I have characters on, Frostmourne is certainly the best of them all, you can find 'PuG' raids almost any time of day and the average gear level of people is always very high... only rarely do you find groups incapable of completing most raid content.

    Gaming = expensive hobby

I find the fact you expect to get multiple collector's editions hilarious... I've pre-ordered collectors editions before, and had them pre-ordered for damn near 10 months and gotten a refund because they had none to give me on release day. If you avoid the disk copy, and steam copy, and stop thinking ahead of time for profit, you'd probably only spend $300 max. Edit: Also, speaking of the SC2:CE... knowing blizzard it'll probably come with a wow pet code.
  14. I'm just sitting here tonight, a little bored, and not too tired... I don't have any of that little flash games like plants vs zombies anymore, since I just got a new OS. Does anyone have any they'd recommend? Ideally something free that I don't have to download to play.
  15. Thanks for the games everyone! I've been spending far too much time just trying 'em all :P

    P2P file sharing is illegal.

I'm going to say right of the bat, I didn't read every, single post... but I understand the general direction the thread is heading in. (Lol) Bit Torrent is a lovely, lovely program; and certainly one of the best, and most convenient ways of distributing files P2P. I understand the issue people have with piracy, and the way P2P file sharing is used to distribute pirated files, but making the use of Bit Torrent illegal, is like making plastic bags illegal because you might want to fill them with cocaine. I know lots of people who prefer to download files through a bit torrent client, than from an FTP server. Quite frankly, I agree with them on the most part; I have never had a problem with torrented files, no viruses or data corruption. (I'm not even sure if data corruption is possible on a torrented file, unless the original file was also corrupt) Anyway... Now i'm rambling, back to the point I was trying to make. If what you're doing (Distributing files via a torrent) isn't illegal (You own the right to distribute those files) I cannot, see why anyone could, or would have a problem with it.
  17. Thats awesome! finish a game on 14600 points :P

Games that should be made in movies

Alien Vs. Predator... Lol. Most other games with the potential to become movies would end up being 20 movies if done in enough detail to do the story justice. Warcraft and Starcraft for example... Warhammer would end up being something like 60 movies. Halo didn't deserve a sequel let alone to be made into a movie...

    Shaving wax?

I shaved dry for a few years, facial waxing doesn't hurt as much as you'de think. Especially if the person doin' the waxing is doin' it properly.

    Starcraft 2 Region Lock

I bet you heard that on teh internetz. It's gotta be bullshit. Enough people in australia can't speak english... I doubt there are anywhere as many as people think that can in the rest of asia.

    Baldur's Gate 2?

^ This. All I can remember from the game was import/exporting and killing everyone in the starting castle in BG1 except Gorion (for the simple reason, you can't kill him).

    Starcraft 2 Region Lock

by that response though you would need a US copy to play with people in the US and an asia-pacific copy to play with people in Australia ect ect, hardly any kind of solution to the problem. Personally I couldn't care less if I get to play with americans or not, its all about the latency problem that occurs connecting to SE Asia instead of america.

    No good RPG's.. Why!

Sounds like just about any other RPG out there, but without the story tied through all of your actions like a pair of laced boots. I liked oblivion for the exact opposite reason I like RPGs are a game genre, Oblivion wasn't riddled with the single story, of a single character... Okay, the main campaign was but thats only about 20% of the game. Vanilla Oblivion isn't comparable to Morrowind, but it gets allot better with mods.
