Logitech Z-5500 - Still the king?

I know that nothing I buy is going to please me perfectly. I have a complete DLS Iridium setup in my car ($1400 front speakers anyone?) so I know nothing will get near that but I still want to get bang for buck. I'm thinking is a waste getting 5.1 because the computer is in the lounge room so surround is a no-go.

I would only want to spend around $200 ideally but might stretch it!

Are the Z2300s Exactly the same just missing 3 speakers? Interesting...
  4. I need new speakers after one of my Z-10s started blew a speaker today. The Z-5500s forr $329@MSY. Anything beat them for that price? I don't game, 80% of the time music, 20% movies/tv. Don't need 5.1 but want something loud! An iPhone dock would be a bonus but not fussed.
  5. I agree. Its far more of a challenge. I mean Office and other standard applications like that will run more than adequately on a dual core CPU with LESS than 2Ghz. Damm Office runs on netbooks with ATOM processors. And if course there is no need for more than 4Gb of Ram for 99% of users, especially if you have a 64bit OS. There was a time when people would buy cheaper components (CPU, RAM, even video cards) and THEN overclock them so they could run fastser near the more mid price point components. The first system I ever built myself had a 1.3Ghz AMD Duron, 256MB SD ram, Yum Cha PSU, and a Geforce MX420. Budget. I was at uni. Money way tight. Overclocked the buggery out of the CPU and GPU with some friends help. Played BF1942 very nicely indeed. At least that was what Overclocking was all about initially. It made practical and financial sense. But now eveyrbody buys a 3ghz plus i7 and overclocks that alongside with the fancy ram and top of the range GPU. There is no real need to do this at from a real world performance viewpoint. But of course it is still a great little hobby. But yeah people werent overlcocking necessarily for a hobby initially, but for practical reasons as well. Maybe I will get back to this philosophy for my next build. Quality components, but budget. Amen to this. I can remember being about age 14 and trying to convince my dad that he is better off getting the AMD 1700+ then the more powerful factory CPU's was one of the most difficult experiences I've had! Well worth it though when I finally beat my mates p4 benchmarks!!
  6. That was going to be my next question regarding how W7 would run. Are you saying it would be better then vista?
  7. He was quite happy with his P4 3.0ghz with XP until it crapped itself...
  8. Wow! Thanks for the help guys. How much of a performance drop are we talking to go to mini-ITX from the other build? Forgot to mention that I'm recycling the DVD-RW drive too. Do the mini-ITX cases take full sized ODD's OK?
  9. Thanks for all the help guys! Master Scythe I will definately take on board your help. Dasa, I could but wrong but I cannot see a CPU in your build and it is already 20% more expensive. In regards to the RAM, would it not be more effective to get 1 stick of 2gb, so that should the need arise another 2gb stick may be purchased and then ran in dual channel? Also, what is this "instant boot" environment you talk about? Sounds intriguing!
  10. Building a PC for a mates dad. Just wondering if anyone would make any changes to this. Cost is the number 1 factor. He is only using it for email, internet and the office suite. I used the wiki over on the whirlpool forums and came up with this. AM3 x2 255 – $65 Gigabyte MA78LMT-S2 – $59 2gb Kingston DDR3 – $23 Seagate Barracuda 500gb – $39 ATX Deluxe 6220-CA w/Codegen 470w PSU – $49 (Where do I find this one or are there any comparable case & PSU's available from MSY?) Total – $235 I do have a couple of usable cases at home but would still need a PSU if I used one of them. Is the $99 Windows 7 Home Premium OEM from MSY the cheapest way to get Windows 7? Also, buying everything from MSY would greatly help.
  11. http://www.nowgamer.com/news/2380/ubisoft-...pc-drm-strategy The new Online Services Platform will require players to connect to Ubi.com to authenticate their game each time they play, and saved games will also be stored online, meaning PC gamers will need to be connected to the internet all the time. Saved games will also be stored online, meaning PC gamers will need to be connected to the internet all the time. Seriously WTF!
  12. Wow... okay, I wasn't sure if I was ever going to tell anyone about this, but it's late and I'm sleep deprived so i guess I'll just write it now and regret it in the morning First of all, - just for some background: My mom died right when I was born, (she was actually really, really hot- but this isn't about her. I guess that's messed up to say, but whatever.) I actually grew up with my dad's family, because my dad has all sorts of emotional issues and he bailed before I was born. So you can see, my childhood was really kind of messed up. Anyways, growing up I feel like there was always a lot of distance between me and my sister. When I was about 17 or 18 I first noticed that my sister was a hottie. I don't want to go into to many details about it, but basically what happened is that I accidentally found a video that she made of herself. I knew she didn't make it for me- but I thought she was so beautiful that I watched it twice. (probably would have watched it a hell of a lot more, except that like right around the time I found the video, all this crazy :!: went down and I had to leave home. (My dad's family who I was staying with got in bad trouble with the law. I never talk about it). Sooo... I was totally lusting after my sister at that point. She was also having bad trouble with the law. She was actually in custody when I left home. My friend and I went to go pick her up. When I saw her that day, after seeing the video, I have to be honest, I just wanted to frak her brains out. Looking back on it now, it's pretty messed up- but I think she had feelings for me too. She actually kissed me right after we came to get her... and it wasn't a sisterly kiss, you know? I mean, it wasn't like ridiculously sexual or anything, but it definitely wasn't sisterly. After we left, we all went to crash with my Sister's friends. On the trip there, my friend sort of implied that he wanted to get with my Sister, and I got a little jealous. He's a good looking guy- and even though she was my sister- I just felt like he was competition. Not much else happened between us for a while except some maybe-sexy hugging. Pretty much everyone in my life at that point was wanted by the government, so we all moved around a lot. I'm not saying that I'm proud of it or anything, but it was kind of an awesome time. My friend and my sister never hooked up I don't think- but I thought there was some serious sexual tension going on between them. It was around that time that I got really badly hurt in an accident. It was messed up. I almost died. But when I was in recovery my sister came to see me, and out of the clear blue sky she started gives me this awesome, slow, passionate kiss on the lips. Sadly (although, I guess for the best) nothing ever came of it. We spent some time apart... and I started to get really religious, so I tried not to think of her that way. It was actually going well for a long time- like I was totally over her. But I have to say, like a year or so after all that stuff went down, we were out sailing (not like a date or anything romantic like that), and she was wearing like the hottest bikini I've ever seen and it brought back all the old feelings. Sigh. A little while later she actually wound up with my friend from before (the sexual tension guy). I can't say I was surprised. But even after she was shacking up with my friend, there was one time we were at a party... my friend was inside, and my sister and I were outside alone. It was a really intimate moment. I think something might have happened, except that I killed the mood when I told her that Darth Vader was our father and that I had to go face him.

    DVD media

Ever since I was little I've always used DVD-R. Not sure why to be honest but I vaguely remember reading something that said -R was better for movies and stuff which is mostly what I burn. Right now I've run out of -R and have some +R lying around. Can I use them to burn DVDs OK? They work on my DVD player but thats a high-end one that plays everything so I'm not sure if it would work alright on my mates.

    BioShock 2

I brought the 4 pack with a few mates today. $34USD each. Can't complain for that!
  15. I might pick up a set tomorrow. Any suggestions? Would prefer them to be readily available in most shops. http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/produc...oducts_id=41494 What are they like?
