  1. I know that nothing I buy is going to please me perfectly. I have a complete DLS Iridium setup in my car ($1400 front speakers anyone?) so I know nothing will get near that but I still want to get bang for buck. I'm thinking is a waste getting 5.1 because the computer is in the lounge room so surround is a no-go.

  2. i have the z2300's which are the 2.1 version, and i can say that i have never had these over 40% volume, the damn windows rattle.

they are the best computer speakers i have heard for a long time.

Id like to get the z5500's one day but cant justifiy the cost just for 3 more speakers.

Are the Z2300s Exactly the same just missing 3 speakers? Interesting...

  3. I need new speakers after one of my Z-10s started blew a speaker today. The Z-5500s forr $329@MSY. Anything beat them for that price?

    I don't game, 80% of the time music, 20% movies/tv.

Don't need 5.1 but want something loud! An iPhone dock would be a bonus but not fussed.

  4. I like pushing low end systems. Sometimes I think people over-power their PC for no reason.

I agree. Its far more of a challenge. I mean Office and other standard applications like that will run more than adequately on a dual core CPU with LESS than 2Ghz. Damm Office runs on netbooks with ATOM processors. And if course there is no need for more than 4Gb of Ram for 99% of users, especially if you have a 64bit OS.

There was a time when people would buy cheaper components (CPU, RAM, even video cards) and THEN overclock them so they could run fastser near the more mid price point components. The first system I ever built myself had a 1.3Ghz AMD Duron, 256MB SD ram, Yum Cha PSU, and a Geforce MX420. Budget. I was at uni. Money way tight. Overclocked the buggery out of the CPU and GPU with some friends help. Played BF1942 very nicely indeed.

At least that was what Overclocking was all about initially. It made practical and financial sense. But now eveyrbody buys a 3ghz plus i7 and overclocks that alongside with the fancy ram and top of the range GPU. There is no real need to do this at from a real world performance viewpoint. But of course it is still a great little hobby.

But yeah people werent overlcocking necessarily for a hobby initially, but for practical reasons as well.

Maybe I will get back to this philosophy for my next build. Quality components, but budget.

Amen to this. I can remember being about age 14 and trying to convince my dad that he is better off getting the AMD 1700+ then the more powerful factory CPU's was one of the most difficult experiences I've had! Well worth it though when I finally beat my mates p4 benchmarks!!

  5. for somthing so cheap i would be looking for secondhand gear as you should be able to get some higher qulity parts

for a new office pc i would look at somthing more like this and while it dose cost a little more hopefully it will be more reliable and you may get your money back since it should use less than half the power

    ASRock E350M1/USB3 Mini-ITX Motherboard $145

    Corsair VS2GB1333D3 2GB (1x2GB) DDR3 $25

    Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB WD5000AAKX $39

Silverstone SG05 Black Cube Mini ITX Case 80 Plus certified SFX 300W power supply $109

    $318

    prices pccg

if you want to use one of your cases with this psu it could save a little cash but the case would need to have itx standoff positions

    Antec EarthWatts 430W 80+ Bronze $69

    $278

ssd may be worth the extra as it can make a massive difference to windows\office performance

    OCZ Vertex 2 60GB SSD $135

extra ram can help to giving windows more room to buffer files that are frequently used

    Corsair CMV4GX3M1A1333C9 4GB (1x4GB) DDR3 $45

Thanks for all the help guys! Master Scythe I will definately take on board your help.

Dasa, I could but wrong but I cannot see a CPU in your build and it is already 20% more expensive.

In regards to the RAM, would it not be more effective to get 1 stick of 2gb, so that should the need arise another 2gb stick may be purchased and then ran in dual channel?

Also, what is this "instant boot" environment you talk about? Sounds intriguing!

  6. Building a PC for a mates dad. Just wondering if anyone would make any changes to this. Cost is the number 1 factor. He is only using it for email, internet and the office suite. I used the wiki over on the whirlpool forums and came up with this.

    AM3 x2 255 – $65

    Gigabyte MA78LMT-S2 – $59

    2gb Kingston DDR3 – $23

    Seagate Barracuda 500gb – $39

ATX Deluxe 6220-CA w/Codegen 470w PSU – $49 (Where do I find this one or are there any comparable case & PSU's available from MSY?)

    Total – $235

I do have a couple of usable cases at home but would still need a PSU if I used one of them.

Is the $99 Windows 7 Home Premium OEM from MSY the cheapest way to get Windows 7?

Also, buying everything from MSY would greatly help.

  7. http://www.nowgamer.com/news/2380/ubisoft-...pc-drm-strategy

The new Online Services Platform will require players to connect to Ubi.com to authenticate their game each time they play, and saved games will also be stored online, meaning PC gamers will need to be connected to the internet all the time.

    Seriously WTF!

  8. Wow... okay, I wasn't sure if I was ever going to tell anyone about this, but it's late and I'm sleep deprived so i guess I'll just write it now and regret it in the morning

First of all, - just for some background: My mom died right when I was born, (she was actually really, really hot- but this isn't about her. I guess that's messed up to say, but whatever.) I actually grew up with my dad's family, because my dad has all sorts of emotional issues and he bailed before I was born. So you can see, my childhood was really kind of messed up.

Anyways, growing up I feel like there was always a lot of distance between me and my sister. When I was about 17 or 18 I first noticed that my sister was a hottie.

I don't want to go into to many details about it, but basically what happened is that I accidentally found a video that she made of herself. I knew she didn't make it for me- but I thought she was so beautiful that I watched it twice. (probably would have watched it a hell of a lot more, except that like right around the time I found the video, all this crazy :!: went down and I had to leave home. (My dad's family who I was staying with got in bad trouble with the law. I never talk about it).

Sooo... I was totally lusting after my sister at that point. She was also having bad trouble with the law. She was actually in custody when I left home.

My friend and I went to go pick her up. When I saw her that day, after seeing the video, I have to be honest, I just wanted to frak her brains out. Looking back on it now, it's pretty messed up- but I think she had feelings for me too. She actually kissed me right after we came to get her... and it wasn't a sisterly kiss, you know? I mean, it wasn't like ridiculously sexual or anything, but it definitely wasn't sisterly.

After we left, we all went to crash with my Sister's friends. On the trip there, my friend sort of implied that he wanted to get with my Sister, and I got a little jealous. He's a good looking guy- and even though she was my sister- I just felt like he was competition. Not much else happened between us for a while except some maybe-sexy hugging.

Pretty much everyone in my life at that point was wanted by the government, so we all moved around a lot. I'm not saying that I'm proud of it or anything, but it was kind of an awesome time.

My friend and my sister never hooked up I don't think- but I thought there was some serious sexual tension going on between them. It was around that time that I got really badly hurt in an accident. It was messed up. I almost died. But when I was in recovery my sister came to see me, and out of the clear blue sky she started gives me this awesome, slow, passionate kiss on the lips.

Sadly (although, I guess for the best) nothing ever came of it. We spent some time apart... and I started to get really religious, so I tried not to think of her that way. It was actually going well for a long time- like I was totally over her. But I have to say, like a year or so after all that stuff went down, we were out sailing (not like a date or anything romantic like that), and she was wearing like the hottest bikini I've ever seen and it brought back all the old feelings. Sigh.

A little while later she actually wound up with my friend from before (the sexual tension guy). I can't say I was surprised.

But even after she was shacking up with my friend, there was one time we were at a party... my friend was inside, and my sister and I were outside alone. It was a really intimate moment. I think something might have happened, except that I killed the mood when I told her that Darth Vader was our father and that I had to go face him.

  9. Ever since I was little I've always used DVD-R. Not sure why to be honest but I vaguely remember reading something that said -R was better for movies and stuff which is mostly what I burn. Right now I've run out of -R and have some +R lying around. Can I use them to burn DVDs OK? They work on my DVD player but thats a high-end one that plays everything so I'm not sure if it would work alright on my mates.

  10. I haven't read this entire topic, only just stumbled across it now. My opinion though is that whilst a very small minority of these crimes are racially charged the majority of them are simply because indians make easy targets.

    If your a drug addict, hobo, thug, etc. Are you going to pick on the group of;

The Asians who could know martial arts or be carrying weapons

The Aussies who have probably been brawling amongst themselves for most of their life and probably have $50 between 5 of them.

Or The indians who always seem to be carrying laptops, smartphones, etc and never seem even the slightest bit intimidating.

As a immigrant friend from work put it whilst we were discussing it, its about the right of initiation. He expected it when he came to this country, until you learn to harden the fuck up and adapt you will be targeted regardless of your race, religion or whatever.

Im no racist but believe that if they don't like it they can fuck off home and the government shouldn't spend a moments thought on it. We are having enough trouble supporting our own citizens let alone spending millions of dollars supporting the ungrateful citizens of another country or 10.

If they don't like getting 'initiated' with violence they should leave?

It happened to my mothers family when they came here, it has happened not only here but everywhere in the world since time began. Natural selection will leave indians behind if they don't harden up. I honestly don't know how their race has survived this long being such whimps, Surely some ancient civilization could have just taken over them without batting an eyelid. To be perfectly honest, from what I have seen I am not a fan of indian/sri lankan/etc work ethics and mannerisms. For example, I work in the security industry and when I organise an agency guard for our site 90% of the time they are useless and have literally been seen running from the smallest incidents, sleeping on the job & hiding when the shit hits the fan. 90% of the guards we get from the agency are also indian/sri lankan/etc. This is not opinion it is from my factual observations.

The europeans, lebanese, asians, etc, etc have all happily migrated here by combining parts of their culture with ours, sure they have all done well with this but the majority have. They stuck to what they know and were good at and blended in to society well by offering something to the country.

  12. I previously used Nero as it was easy to point and click but now with Nero 9 being bloated to 2gb I think I should find something else. I don't use most of the functions that come with nero, only Nerovision for making DVD movies and Nero Express/Burning rom. What good alternatives are there? Google yielded way too many options which I'm sure alot of are dodgy. Ideally I would like something that can reasonably quick and easily handle turning x264, divx, etc into DVD movies and burn them.

  13. That's the thing, I don't think that the average consumer would actually care.

I can't help but think that the mobile phone market is primarily about image, even before the iPhone hit the scene.

    Rob.

Right on the mark man. People dont give a shit about specs its how people will think of them when they pull the phone out in the line at the supermarket or playing a game on the train. You say "It has a 1ghz CPU" and their like 'WUT" I know I will get shot down for it & I know its a great phone but the vast majority of users will only buy something to keep up with their friends or neighbours the iphone is a perfect example of this. My brother bought one simply becuase everyone else had one and the fact that it was apple and apple is cool right now.

Or maybe it was Apple's simple and effective ad campains showing not much more than hands and an iphone doing stuff, a refreshing break from phone ads full of arty and pinch shit.

actually, no. It is just about universally accepted that apple marketing relies heavily on the consumers social need to fit in and less about the product itself. The fanboys such as yourself will still cream their pants over every announcement about the hardware, but the general public will just require the briefest of brief rundowns on what the product does in a general sense, and then shown either a) a picture of the unit or b) pictures of numerous attractive individuals all looking like they are enjoying the unit.

Of course thats what apple are all about. Although no-one can possibly say that they don't back it up with some awesome bits of kit.

  14. Now I've had my PC up and running for a few days I have a few questions.

I attempted to unlock the extra cores on the Phenom II 550BE. This didn't go so well. The motherboard is a 785GT-UD3h which people have reportedly unlocked cores with successfully.

As instructed I went into the BIOS and changed the ACC to Auto & Hybrid mode. When the computer rebooted it gets to the "Windows 7 is loading" splash screen and freezes. I also tried to up the CPU voltage .025 and .05v with no success.

I am only using the standard AMD cooler for the time being, would getting a aftermarket cooler make this work or am I simply one of the unlucky ones who cannot unlock the extra cores?

Also according to HWmonitor & CPU-Z my CPU is anywhere from 40-50 degrees although in my bios the healthcheck reports it as 50-55 everytime I check. Which one should I believe and is this normal?
