  1. HT is only good for things that are heavily threaded, unfortunately, most things are still low on thread counts including the affore mentioned apps. HT will more than likely hamper the end result and has been proven by the customers who I build such systems for. Everyone is in such a hurry to recommend stuff that is nothing of a workstation. All are just desktops and from what I can see, recommended by those who read too many mags and live on forums rather than making a living from building these. I don't think the OP even is clear on what he wants when it's titled HIGH-END yet is far from it. This was something I was waiting for someone to realise and make use of it. Now, here is Higher-End: Notice the difference?

Go look a little closer at the outputs. 41A on the 12V rail that is shared with the whole system. nVidia have rated the cards for 185W TDP, why skimp now to save a few coins when you can have bigger for SFA. 90-125W TDP for the CPU, 30-50W board losses, 15W per HDD, 185W per vid card (370W) and 15W for fans = 520-575W Now add in the ageing due to stress and use, not going last long and lead to failures with no room to grow. Oh, and just for the record, don't reference PSU's that are not common and are very expensive for what they are. Buy a decent puppy now and know that there is headroom for a few years of use while allowing for upgrades, not many stay with just one HDD and older cards.
  3. Thought it was to be "High-End" ? Looks very mid-range desktops to me, sorry. Try looking at an AMD option and also forget the Xeon, you are far from needing it. The AMD 1090T gives 3.2 x 6 for a few hundred bucks. More than 1K cheaper than the slower Xeon. You have also quoted for a whole lot of stuff that could be left out as standard affairs. All have at least 1 Gb ethernet, all have USB, most have FireWire (cough), both need KB, Mouse, Sound etc. etc. Work out the costs for the comon stuff seperate, then worry about the guts of the system alone. EDIT: LOL @ the hyperthreading sales pitch.
  4. There basically no 500's or realy even 600's that have enough 12V rail current to keep a pair of hungry cards happy, hense why bigger supplies have been recommended. Each card has a TDP or 185W, you will need 400W just on the rails feeding then alone, now add rest of system.
  5. I would assume that the Array was formated using MBR and not GPT, is that correct ? Leave the array and the controller alone, if it was fine before the raptor died, then it will be fine now, you have either bad drivers or poorly configured hardware (MB and BIOS). Sounds more like, the array is either offline or not given a drive letter. Screen shots would be good. If you're still on XP, may I suggest moving on and joining the rest of us with Win7 and let XP die, too limited. Are you also aware that XP and SSD's are not a great combo unless the SSD has been setup correctly before installing OS ?
  6. You can get some very cheap OEM DDRIII-1600 CL9 that will do fine otherwise you can aim at some of the CL8 and 7 coming out in better quantities. Anything above 850W would be wise, keep in mind, PSU's deteriorate with age and as a general rule, loose 5% of rated output per year depending on use. 24/7 use at load will see faster fall-off.

    990 = 6 cores of sweet overclocking and more balls without the wasted GPU of the sandy... 580 Vs. 590 = Dual GPU Vs. Quad GPU. The dollars are whats going to kill it. No mention of what the rest of the system is and if it will even allow for the combos you are assuming. Price wise, sounds alot like there is more dollars than sense involved. Not being rude, just blunt.
  8. In the OP. Nothing to do with pump pressure. It is the static head pressure. Wake up yourself and think about what you have just said. Oh, um, gee wizz, CAD machines, I build them.... As for the RAD in yours, a 360 is more than sufficient.

    Sadly, a 8600/9600 card is still rather slow for PhysX work. The better cheap option is a 8800/9800 card or better. 295's have been used to great success however, the 2xx series nVidiot cards work best. Now, the other things, do you need PhysX, there are not many titles using PhysX and other use Havok due to licensing BS. If you do the the easiest way is to source the Beta drivers nVidia release a while back that enable PhysX with even ATi cards in system/main spot. Simple method is as follows: DL the Beta nVidia drivers (google it) DL the latest ATi drivers (10.11 at the moment) DL DriverSweeper Now run DS and remove ALL ATi and nVidia drivers, reboot in safe-mode (F8 while booting) and run it again. After this, then install the nVidia Beta drivers (they are stable and work well) Then install the ATi drivers Reboot Now enable the PhysX and test with "FluidMark" Enjoy the best of both worlds.

    I have had this before and the issue was caused by a mixture of bad Matrix software and Cache settings. The culprit was the use of the newer 9.XX software rather than the older 8.9 stuff. The newer stuff is best suited for SSD's and the ICH10R chipsets. The newer software however was prone to random things including occasional lock-ups and files just vanishing. LOL I run 2 series cards.

It doesn't matter how many water blocks you think you can fit on a main board, you still need cooling airflow over the board as there are plenty of passive components that need to be kept cool ranging from small chipsets (audio, NIC, USB, etc.) through to the VRM's and North/south-bridges. The only true way to keep these cool silently is through a oil-immersion system where the whole PC excluding optical and hard drives is placed in a fish tank filled with mineral oil (baby oil). The main heater components (GPU & CPU) are then water cooled conventionally. The end result is a major mess if you need to service the system. Placing water-cooling components outside is one thing, if the ambient temps are high outside then the system will run hotter as well. The other area of concern was this little tit-bit: This is just asking for an EPIC FAIL. You may have a WC loop of your own (bloody mess by the sounds of it with 3 different RADs) but you still fail to understand a simple concept called HEAD PRESSURE. Lets say you place a RAD and RESIVOIR up on the roof and the PC is down on the floor, you would see somewhere around 3-5 meters of head above the system and it's waterblocks/pump. That's 10-15 feet in the old currency, now add in the surface area of the waterblock, 3-4 spuare inches per face (two of them remember), now we average this to 7"sq. and then multiply our haed pressure for 10' (23.1 PSI), you get 23.1 x 7 = 161.7 pounds (72+ KGs) of static pressure trying to force the waterblock apart. This pressure is on the water pump as well as any fittings, you will get a nasty leak fast. Do the maths and have a grasp first before making recommendations please. Now moving back to the OP, just an observation I have made: It is stated that the system is for heavy professional CAD work yet there is main thing that stands out, the choice/use of desktop hardware rather than having a proper CAD machine/workstation. If serious about CAD then there would be Xeon/Opteron CPU's (dual socket is common) and Quadro/FireBall video cards. There would also be RAID arrays for both OS/Programs as well as storage. It sounds more like a case of it being a desktop home PC for gaming and U-tube work rather than a work tool. Mixing business and pleasure is not a good recipe.
