    Watching site from outside Oz?

How can a complete newb go about setting up one? What is the legality of them?
  2. I own a Dell laptop. Yes, you may laugh at me later. Anyway, it's about 3 years old. I turned it on today and it gives me this message that says 'Your battery is still fine but is approaching the end of it's life. Please click here for more info.' I clicked and it brought up this gui menu about the battery, battery control center or something like that. Anyway, there is a link I can click to order a new battery from Dell, as according to the menu only Dell batteries can be used in Dell machines. Is this legit? Or is it some trojan thing that's trying to get me to send money? I'm amazed that the battery only lasts 3 years, even for a Dell!? Hence my suspicion. If I dont buy a battery, I can still use the computer normally by just plugging it in right? Cheers

    Battery needs replacing?

Okay, thanks. If I dont bother replacing the battery at all and just let the dead one sit in there and use the power cable, is that a problem?

    Books & NDA?

Quick question: books don't have NDAs right? If the author describes an idea in a book you could write that idea anywhere you liked as long as you properly credited the author to avoid plagiarism, right?

    Books & NDA?

Thanks for the replies. I think Cybes is probably right. It's nothing particularly exciting to be honest, sorry >_> It's just some ideas in a book that are models and their computer simulations including results. I wanted to tell the model rules and results to my friend (who doesnt own the book) so we could test them for ourselves to see if we came up with same or similar results. Had a quick flick through the Aussie copyright act, and it seems like this would fall under fair dealing. Edit: No patents either btw. Nothing explicitly mentioned like NDA. So just normal copyright then :)

    Device for Old Man?

I'm after a device for my wife's grandfather. He is 65 and basically has zero idea about computers and using them. My wife's going to teach him a bit but he's still gonna need something simple. Basic functions including Internet access, and as cheap as possible too. I was thinking Microsoft RT Surface, looks quite simple, has all the basics, and is cheap. Anyone agree or got another idea? Cheers
  7. I was running some Monte Carlo simulations, just begun actually, when the program stopped, the screen showed pink lines across it and then the computer crashed. It turns back on but the monitor won't seem to work. It turns on and then without displaying anything goes back into power saving mode and shuts off. Anybody help? Running windows 8. Monitor itself is LG E2290.

Lol well mine is 8800GTS 640mb, so I suppose that's one of those hey. Will end up doing the card tomorrow as need to look after family member today.

    Monitor stopped working - help

Hi I get absolutely nothing displayed on the monitor. That is, no output at all during boot. I'll give the reseat a try tomorrow. I've had the card since 2007, so 6 years now. Do graphics cards die that quickly? Edit: sorry Ali, the two cards aren't swappable as such. The other machine is about 12 years old now.

    Monitor stopped working - help

Hi. Yeah, I just tested the monitor on another machine I had boxed up (and unboxed now). The monitor works fine, so I suppose my machine has spat the dummy again >_<

    X:Rebirth

Release announced. Between 15-19 November, depending upon where you live. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Someone post that Take My Wallet pic, please!
  13. So I tried out Mechwarrior Online with my new shiny Win 8. Second map I get disconnected and the PC restarts. It now is going into a restart loop each time saying it has found a different error. It says Preparing Automatic Repair, then the error message and that it's collecting info, then auto restart. Again, and again, and again. Please help. How can I stop this madness?

    Complex simulations - recommends?

I tried Hawken last night thinking it would be a fun mech game. I was bored after 30 minutes. It just felt way too much like a generic fps with a mech skin. Just my opinion, of course. I got to thinking that the kinds of games I enjoy are complex and/or simulations. For example, I like Egosofts X series like X3:Terran Conflict. Currently I'm waiting for their new one X:Rebirth. What kinds of games, then, can you peoples recommend for me?

    Win8 64bit install?

Hi This is a bit shit. I bought the Win 8 DVD box. It came with both the 32 & 64 bit discs in. I had Win XP sp3. My CPU supports 64 bit so I figured I'd just go for the 64 bit one. I put in the disc and got an error message. It said : "Your installation media cannot be used to install Windows. Your current version of Windows is 32 bit and does not match the architecture of the 64 bit installation media. Please insert the 32 bit media and restart Windows Setup." So I figured I'd install 32 bit Win 8, then just use the 64 bit disc and do that. After installing the 32 bit version without a problem, I tried the 64 bit disc and got the exact same message. What's going on? How can I install 64 bit Win 8? Cheers
  16. Win 8 seems to take the Microsoft account and use that for login such that your Microsoft account password and computer login are the same. Is this a big deal in terms of security? I use a different password for literally everything. I don't like the idea of using Microsoft account password for my login password as well. Am I being overly paranoid, or is it better to do something? In case of the latter, what are my options?

    Complex simulations - recommends?

Thanks for the replies thus far. Yep, there's another mech game. Mechwarrior Online and it actually seems pretty good. Alot more complex than Hawken. Gonna check it out. I'll have a look at DCS, thanks. I've tried EVE three times in the past. Unfortunately I can't play MMOs these days. My play time is sporadic and doesn't lend itself well to teaming up to do things for extended periods of time. Plus I'm not willing to do what I'm told by some arsehole at the other end of the internets. I'll play how I want to, which makes MMOs not such a good match for me. (Not having a go at you though, Cybes. It's a good suggestion based on what I asked.) I'm not into car/racing games, sorry kikz. But if I was its a good suggestion. I'm a picky old bastard. Maybe I really am just getting too old lol.

    [Win 8] - Password : Microsoft account?

I'll try out the local account thing, thanks. I'm probably being way too paranoid, bowiee. Only I have access and it is at home. Would it be possible for the computer to be compromised or the like if I was hacked through a virus or malware, or something along those lines? Also I had to take it into the shop the other day, and I didn't want to enter my password in the store.

Win 8 Restart loop after crash - make it stop

Hi all Just as a follow up. I took the machine into the shop yesterday (Sunday) and they ran some tests and it turns out the new RAM I had was throwing up compatibility issues and errors. So we put new RAM in and so far so good. I had to re-install Windows though once I could access the machine again as Windows was playing silly buggers. Apparently RAM (DDR2) quite often causes issues?

Win 8 Restart loop after crash - make it stop

Ok I made an ISO disk of UBCD and ran the hdd checks. It seemed to suggest there were no problems. I ran a ram check on the disk and it too suggested no problem. I checked the cables and they seem fine. I'm stumped. The Win 8 install disk refuses to boot no matter what I try. Think it's time to take it into the store.

Win 8 Restart loop after crash - make it stop

Fair enough. It's about 6 years old now so I suppose I've gotten a decent life out of it. I put the ram in about a week before I installed Win 8; as soon as I got home from the store actually. It's been fine with XP and it was fine for the three days after installing Win 8. I'll check as you suggest though.

Win 8 Restart loop after crash - make it stop

Alright thanks. I'll make the UBCD disk after work tonight and see if I get any joy with that. Regardless I'll take it down to my PC store I always use. This is obviously beyond me. How do HDDs break like has most likely occurred? Would it have to do with the new Windowd system or extra ram I added, or just bad coincidental timing?

Win 8 Restart loop after crash - make it stop

Yes you can, that's the whole point of it, you make the disk and then can use it to boot any PC with a bootable optical drive.Do note, as with any ISO you do not burn the ISO to CD as a data disk you must burn it as a bootable disk. ImgBurn is the best for this as it will warn you if you try and burn an ISO as a data file. Thanks for the reply. I'm a noob at this stuff, please forgive me when I show my noobness. Ok, so I'll make that UBCD disk then on my laptop. Do you recommend one of the programs, specifically. I had a look and was quite overwhelmed with the choices. Not sure which one i should use. Ok, info on my machine. I'll give you any info I can, just not sure what info is needed. When I tried to use the Windows 8 install disk I put it in just like I did when I first installed it. It then gives that message on boot up that says press any key to boot from CD or DVD so I hit space as I did when I first installed it. When I first installed it, it went to the install screen and away we went. This time though it just seemed to hang. After a couple of minutes the machine seemed to ignore the disc and went back to booting from the HDD which then went back into the crash/restart loop. The disc may not be a bootable disc, dunno, but wouldn't that mean I wouldn't have been able to install in the first place? My machine specs are as follows: Win 8 64 bit. I added 4gb of ram before installing Win 8 for a total of 6gb as I only had 2gb which isn't enough for Win 8. CPU is core2duo E6850(3.00). Motherboard is GA-P35-DQ6. HDD is HDT725050VLA360. GPU is EN8800GTS 640M. Noob question: if I make an iso of my Win 8 install disc it won't hurt the original disc will it? Assuming worst case scenario and there is something seriously seriously wrong, what are the possibilities? Melted gpu/CPU? Could Mechwarrior Online really have fried my machine like that? Or would it be something else?

Win 8 Restart loop after crash - make it stop

Thanks for the reply. I can't even seem to get the original Windowd disc recognized though. Wouldn't mean that a copy won't work as well? I'm thinking there is a high chance I've broken some hardware, like the HDD, as aliali suggests. In that case, nothing will get me access right?
