    Win 8 Restart loop after crash - make it stop

    Hi thanks for the reply. I just tried putting in the Win 8 disc but nothing happens. It refuses to boot from it, and after a few minutes of stalling it goes back into the cycle of looping through crashes and restarts. So I can't even get access to my machine. Can I make that UCBD disc on another machine and put it in like a boot disc? Otherwise there's no way to get access to my machine. Cheers

    Win 8 Restart loop after crash - make it stop

    Eventually last night I had to hit the power button to force it to stop. I needed sleep. I tried again this morning and it goes into the same auto restart loop saying sorry but there was an error we are collecting data and will auto restart your computer. Am I going to have to put the Win 8 DVD in and reinstall all over? /cry

    Win8 64bit install?

    Crikey, thanks for the quick reply. Stupid question #2: How do I do a fresh install? Actually just found a guide at about.com.
  4. So I finally got a chance to go and check out RAM for my aging machine. It seems there are two prices, the retail price and insured price. Eg the retail price was $40 and the insured a few dollars more at $45. Apparently RAM often has incompatibility issues and doesn't work, so the two prices. If you pay the insured price and you have troubles, you can take the RAM back and get the retail price back. So essentially you lose a few dollars. If you pay the retail price and have problems, well you're shit outta luck. Is it worth paying the insured price, that is does RAM really have alot of incompatibility issues? The shop I go to is a specialty computer shop (called Pasokon Kobo), and they're always knowledgeable and helpful, so I can't imagine them bullshitting to scam customers in this case, but wanted to double check. This is in Japan fwiw.

    XP -> 7 (maybe 8)

    So I am currently running XP on my desktop and want to upgrade soon as the support will end in about a year. I live in Japan and got my desktop custom built about 7 years ago. As such, the OS, XP, is Japanese language. I'd like to get an English language version this time. I guess this is no issue. Can I get the upgrade pack, that seems to be the cheaper pack, and upgrade from XP? Or, do I need to buy a full version? How does the installation work? Does it just install over the top of all existing programs, such that the only thing that changes is Windows? Or, does it format and delete everything so I need to reinstall everything again? Also, I currently only have 2Gb of RAM. How much RAM should I get for 7 or 8? Would 4Gb be sufficient or would 6-8Gb be better? Cheers

    iphone 5 car adapter/ audio player?

    I was hoping for both charging and replay. I've no idea if my car supports iOS6? Better check, right?

    XP -> 7 (maybe 8)

    Ok next question: Does anyone have an idea how I might purchase an English version, for installation? The ones being sold here all seem to be Japanese ones. Now I know the language packs are free and can be downloaded later, but I want an English version from the start so I can install it in English. Cheers

    XP -> 7 (maybe 8)

    Hmm, probably SS. Literally translated it says 'Please install application for playback of DVDs.' So yeah I guess that sounds more like software, doesnt it. And would explain what the guy at the shop was saying too.

    XP -> 7 (maybe 8)

    Did you mean, your DVD drive should outlast your OS, Nich? Thanks for that, then. Next question: Looking at amazon Japan they have two varieties of 8 for sale - DSP and normal(?). The DSP is cheaper by about $50. Is it one of those ones where you can use it only once, it registers to your mobo, or something? Whereas the normal one can be used on any machine, but only one at a time, again and again? Cheers Edit: Sorry, to answer your question, Nich. I dont suppose I do use my DVD much these days. However, there are times when I do use it and it would be good to have. Some old games, occasional movie, burning photo albums of the family etc.

    New RAM?

    I wish to I increase my RAM on a relatively aging system. Currently I have 2Gb. What would be recommended? My mobo is Gigabyte GA-P35-DQ6, and apparently supports DDR2 1066/800/667, with up to 8Gb by 4 DIMM slots. Does that mean each slot can take up to 2Gb? Cheers

    New RAM?

    Thanks Dasa. That's a perfect solution.

    XP -> 7 (maybe 8)

    Thanks for the replies. I ran that hardware tester and it looks like my DVD player isn't compatible with Windows 8, so I suppose I'll have to go with 7. If I purchase an English version of 7 will there be any problems installing it? Maybe the DOS or something is in Japanese? Also, I went to a computer store to ask a couple of things, and regarding the DVD issue a worker said that there is some program you can download that may allow me to use it even with 8. Anyone know what he's talking about?

    XP -> 7 (maybe 8)

    Hardware compatibility, now that's something I'll have to check for win 8. I kind of like 8 after having a look at it. I suppose the 'Desktop' tab from the Start menu gets the old style menu back so you can bring up things like Windows Explorer easily? How do you go about formatting etc? Do you uninstall all your programs using their uninstall function or the Add/Remove programs from Control Panel, and once you've done that run some kind of format, then install new Windows? Or does the simple act of installing new Windows format & delete everything anyway? Cheers

    Learning res for functions?

    I'm trying to get my head around functions and their various parts, arguments, parameters etc. Does anybody know of good resources to learn about the programming of functions? I have both the Jerry Ford Programming for beginners book and the Wang dummies one, and both are decent but don't go into enough detail for me about functions. Good ole google search is proving as fruitless. Any better ideas?

    Learning res for functions?

    Wow thanks, that was an awesome reply. I'm glad to see there's still life in these forums yet. I've been having a good look at functions again since I posted and think I have solved my dilemma. I'm trying to learn the code for Amibroker btw, which is apparently based on C. Just to check: If I wrote a function like: Function SumIt ( f0, f1, f2 ) { //body in here } And then called the function, for eg SumIt ( 1.5, 2.5, 4.5 ) The numerical values in the call part there would be substituted for the f values and used in whatever the body of the function had defined for them. That's right, isn't it?
  18. So how does one go about calculating password strength in terms of time required to crack the password? I was looking at this http://xkcd.com/936/ webpage about passwords here, and it shows a calculation. I thought this was quite interesting. I'd like to know how to do it by hand, like this webpage. For example, say you used a random password of both lower case and upper case letters that was 8 characters long, how many bits of entropy would that be? From there it is simply 2^bits, then divide that by 1000 for 1000 guesses per second. So I guess I need help in knowing how to calculate the bits of entropy in the passwords.

    Calculating password strength?

    Thanks for the replies. Yeah, a little after I made my post I found the site below which is pretty interesting. It was too late to reply to my own post though :P http://www.redkestrel.co.uk/Articles/Rando...rdStrength.html The main part about bits of entropy is below: Character Pool Available Characters (n) Entropy Per Character digits 10 (0-9) 3.32 bits lower-case letters 26 (a-z) 4.7 bits case sensitive letters and digits 62 (A-Z, a-z,0-9) 5.95 bits all standard keyboard characters 94 6.55 bits So my example of 8 string lower/upper case password would be: 62 possible characters, so 5.95 bits per character. 5.95X8=47.6 bits of entropy. Then 2^47.6=213318142629234.88813457721792354. At 1000 guesses per second, we get 213318142629234.88813457721792354/1000=213318142629.23488813457721792354 seconds to break the password, which is (213318142629.23488813457721792354/86400)/365=6764 years. So pretty safe I guess lol.

    Thanks David. That looks really good, but we're wanting to play the normal one, not 40k. I'll look into it though; maybe it can be modded to use for normal.

    So I'm interested in playing Warhammer with my friend over something like Skype. We live in different countries. I figured there must be various resources out there by now to help with this, and thought about asking you guys first. I figure we'll need things like drawable maps we can digitally pass back and forth, as we cant use minis; dice; etc. Anyone got any ideas where to look? I could spend hours looking through google searches, but figured you guys might know of such stuff, and be able to help better, hence asking here first. Cheers

    Guild Wars 2

    I've no idea where you can get a physical copy from sorry. It launched on Tuesday and by Friday (or Sat) digital sales were suspended due to so many people buying the game and them not having the server capacity. I suspect the physical copies that are still out in the wild wont be for long! I cant imagine they'll keep digital sales suspended for too long though. Once they've got the architecture up and running they'll probably open sales back up again.

    Guild Wars 2

    Hmm, worth is a bit subjective, but I'm happy thus far. I mean there are no monthly subs, and that's fracking huge for me. Even if the game was only mediocre that would be a decent selling point, but thus far GW2 has been great, so having no subs means it is truly excellent. That said, as someone else pointed out it isnt perfect. However, I suppose no one would really expect it to be anyway. I've been playing alot more PvE than I intended just because it's so damned fun. The only PvP I've done thus far is WvW and that is alot of fun too. However, sometimes trying to get xp from WvW can be frustratingly difficult. PvE gives more consistent xp. I also need to learn to play my class, Guardian, alot better; both in PvE and PvP. I occasionally get owned badly in PvE. It's quite embarrassing. I'm generally able to do okay in PvP, staying back healing, shielding, rezzing, but I think I can improve because sometimes I feel like I'm having no effect, especially when my xp bar doesnt move for 30 minutes :/ That said, you get xp for captures, defence, etc it seems and if the 'team' isnt playing for those goals then I guess xp is going to be hard to get. WARNING: Game is currently unavailable for purchase. Arenanet said earlier that if they got too many players buying game accounts they would have to close sales to preserve server integrity. And this has come to pass! So digital sales are on hold; physical copies can still be bought until they are sold out too. I expect they'll add a bunch more servers and then open up sales once again. For now though you may not be able to purchase it.

    Guild Wars 2

    So I played about 2 hours of solely PvE last night - the starter zone (for humans?) Queensdale. It was fun. The 'quests' were hearts and events and simply popped up when either you or they were ready to go and you were in the area. I admit I like it better than having to find the exclamation marks over peoples heads. The hearts/events were pretty fun too, particularly when there were alot of people getting involved.
