    Guild Wars 2

Initial impressions: So good, I lost sleep. Actually to be fair, I only played 90 minutes last night before the youngling needed attention, so it's a bit hard to say just how good it was. Nonetheless, I had fun. I started with a human guardian. After I completed the first bit (personal story, I think?), I figured out how to get into WvW and away I went. The PvE bits look fun. As I mention above I didnt play much beyond the initial bit before diving into WvW (where I intend to spend most of my time), but the gameplay looks interesting. I like the idea of renown hearts and dynamic events and simply being able to participate in them when you come to an area. Rather than looking around for the exclamation mark above the NPC head. Alot less linear and I think that will be interesting. One concern I have is how these events will actually play out. I played Warhammer Online, which had similar things (I think - only having played 90 minutes, almost all of which was WvW, it's a bit disingenuous of me to call them 'similar') and they seemed to get stale pretty bloody quick. That is, hardly anyone seemed to be doing them. The WvW was awesome fun. I got my butt repeatedly kicked, but it was all good. We smashed down a wall and broke down another to get inside a keep and hold it. Once I figured out that my basic(?) attack would auto attack on a single press and I didnt need to spam it, it made things a little easier (and my keyboard was happier). I also figured out that you could move and cast. That's awesome, and yet such a paradigm shift that even after I figured it out I kept stopping to cast >_< The dodge mechanic is also a bit tough to get used to in the beginning. I just want to stand there like most MMOs and hit attack keys, but here you should move and dodge. It works quite well I think. Once I figured it out I seemed to be better at avoiding attacks. It will be good to level up to get some interesting skills to play with. A couple of questions. 1 - How do you tell enemy NPCs from enemy players in WvW? When we were attacking the wall and keep, alot of the red names were pretty standard like Garrison Warrior etc. That is, they certainly didnt look like player names. Are these NPCs? Do enemy players actually have their normal names displayed, or are they given generic names on the field of battle? 2 - How do you get back to the place you were in PvE after you're done in WvW? I was in Queensdale, and I used the WvW tab to just port into WvW, afterwards I used an Azura portal to port to Lions Gate(?), then a waypoint marker to get to Queensdale. But this method cost me money and seemed a bit convoluted, considering I could port to WvW from where I stood. 3 - What and how exactly does the overflow thing work? In Queensdale the small minimap said I was in Shaemoor Overflow. What does that mean? Edit: Oh and the fact that this game is free means it's a winner imho. Great gameplay minus bullshit subscription fees. Two thumbs up!

Did you guys have issues with the activation email thing: Click on the link to confirm your email address, that is sent to your email? Mine keeps sending me dead links, and failing the confirmation. It seems the game works just fine though.
  3. Hi I'm looking at putting together a new gaming rig. My current one is getting a bit long in the tooth. I'd like to spend as little as possible (coz I'm a cheap bastard) while getting a decent machine. It doesnt have to play everything on the max possible settings all the time. I was thinking the budget gamer #2 specs you've made, Dasa, look quite good for what I'm after. If say I went with the 7770 for the gpu, then that would allow me to play anything on the market currently, and probably anything likely to come for some time, right? I see the higher end gpus can go up to 3G, but do you really need any more than 1G for gaming? Edit: Upon looking over the radeon site, I think I'd pony up a bit more cash and go with the 7950. I also see that cards have Ghz and RAM now. So the 7950 would be 800MHz and 3G RAM. Also, the case you've suggested - bitfenix merc alpha - looks okay. I'd really like something with very nice cooling and something that is very quiet. Extra room would be nice too, but not essential. What can you recommend here, assuming the merc alpha doesnt already fit the bill? Cheers P.S. I want to build this machine myself. I havent really built a machine from scratch before, just parts here and there. Not too difficult is it?

Gaming rig - cheap but quality

I see, thanks again. Sorry, I should have mentioned, but I intend keeping my current machine for my various nefarious (business) purposes. At the moment I use it for both business and gaming. I'd prefer to have my business run on a separate machine, and I figure my gaming rig is a bit old, so why not get a new one. So I'll need a new case.

Those of you playing, please keep us up to date on your opinions! I'm gonna play vicariously for a while; and see if your opinions sway me to getting it (I think I want it).

Gaming rig - cheap but quality

Cheers Dasa. I think I'm gonna go with the 7950. Is there much difference between the ranges of 800MHz and 1GHz? Say going with a lower card but the GHz edition. Also, why is there so much emphasis on Radeon cards here? I've always used NVidia. Not that I'm against Radeon at all, and am quite happy to use one. Thanks for the case ideas. I'm still undecided on this. Currently I use an Antec 900, and I REALLY like the clear side so that you can see into your machine. I think I want another case that also has this clear side. What options are available? Am I looking at the Antec range?

    US vsn Office 2010 activation?

Fwiw, I bought a copy and tried it out. Works great, thanks!

    US vsn Office 2010 activation?

I want to buy a US version of Office 2010. However, I live in Japan. Does anybody know if I'll have any problems trying to get it to work? I believe there is some kind of activation required as a final part of the installation process, would I be blocked here because I'm not in the US? Any help appreciated.

    Borderlands 2, Anyone?

I thought the game was crap. Co-op made it bearable. Wont be bothering with #2. No doubt Gearbox will release it in the same sorry state as the first. One wonders if they spent most of their development time making stupid Claptrap videos.

    Diablo III

Finally finished Normal mode today. Lol yes, family & work business means I dont have much play time. Anyway, I didnt think much of the game tbh. If I hadnt exceeded the 30 day limit, I would have requested a refund. Pretty craptastic to be brutally frank. I wont be bothering to play more :P Blizz games just arent doing it for me anymore...I wonder what their new IP will be, and if I'll be interested in them as a company again.

    US vsn Office 2010 activation?

Great, thanks. I actually want to buy a US version, not only because it's in English, but because it's ALOT cheaper and it allows activation on 3 PCs. I want Home & Student version (I'm not a student though). The Japanese store doesnt have Home & Student, the one closest is called Office Personal (and doesnt have Powerpoint) and is over 3 times as expensive and only allows activation on 2 PCs. So I'd like to give the Japanese Microsoft a big middle finger by purchasing the US version.

    Guild Wars 2

I havent had a chance to look at the guilds vid yet, but I will. One question though, how does the guesting work exactly? I'm having trouble getting my head around it. Let's say you wanted to go and do some PvE, and you notice there arent many people around and you'd like to have more people to play with. What do you do then? Is there a list of worlds that show population and you choose one and then get ported there or something? On the GW wiki page it states you can only move over to another world if your friends are there, is that true?

    Guild Wars 2

Those vids, particularly the one about interesting facts, are really good, Harro. I really like that they are moving away from the holy trinity. I like that gear will be less important than skill. I also really like the idea of WvWvW (3 servers and a 2 week battle) AND that you can get in there from level 1 and basically level up entirely playing that. That's really, really intriguing, and made me alot more interested. Enough to post here :) I have been, like many others, quietly watching this game. Thanks for all your posts. I think I have been reluctant to get too excited because the road that MMOs travel is littered with all their corpses. Almost all of them fail, or dont live up to anywhere near the hype. As such I think many players over the years have been burnt one too many times. Eventually you stop touching the flame, coz you know as shiny as it looks trying to get involved leaves you in pain. Anyway, I'm not suggesting GW2 will end up this way. Actually, I hope it doesnt; I hope it does succeed in the ways it is being marketed. It would be good to have a new contender in the MMO space. One without a subscription fee either, which for me with very limited play time per month is awesome. Subscription fees are basically a deal breaker these days. Do you know if there is a server (or world as they call them right) that most Aussies have decided to play on? An unofficial Oceanic server, as such. Assuming there arent already Aussie servers.

    Downloading TV shows?

So I want to get access to TV shows. I do not, however, want to visit my Uncle to get them. So let's get this out of the way to begin - please do NOT reply if your comment in any way contains reference to Uncle based TV show downloading. Okay, so it would be cool if I could pay a bit of money and get access to TV shows. Something like iTunes does. Only I am in Japan and the Japanese iTunes does not have TV shows available. They only just last year allowed movies, and the selection they have available is limited. There is a big video/entertainment store chain thing here called Tsutaya but they have this ridiculous system where you order online, then they post by snail mail your order to you, which you then return via post. So 18th century... There doesnt seem to be a digital platform in this country which offers what I (and I suspect most of the population) wants due to, I expect, the byzantine distribution system the 'ole boys' have got cooked up to keep themselves in the $$monay$$. So I've been wondering what other ways there were. Maybe other sites exist online that I dont know about and I could use? Hulu was one I tried but wouldnt allow my Japanese IP. However they just opened a Japanese site, which is great but unfortunately the content is very limited >_< Another site I tried is cucirca.com and that worked brilliantly in early July when a friend suggested it and I tried it, but ever since it has been shite. It plays a few seconds then loads, loads, loads, loads, etc plays a few more seconds then loads...you get the idea. It's unwatchable. So, any ideas? So far I have: 1. Make an Aussie credit card and use that to open an Aussie iTunes account - but that will be an extremely annoying thing to do from here. 2. Simply buy the DVD set when it comes out (or, wait a year or two for price to drop). The sets are usually somewhere around the same price as buying each individual episode from iTunes in general.

    Skyrims new DLC trailer

+1 for waiting for price drop. That price tag is just too high for me. Especially considering the kind of extra content mods add to this game.

    Downloading TV shows?

Thanks for the replies. @Juggs. Yes, I suppose I asked for that hehe. I am touched (in that way too!) that you sat there and pasted that for the whole of about what 60 seconds? <3 Just to make you guys jealous of my sexual prowess, I mean my internet speed - with my faster than light connection, 200Mbps optic fibre cable TV shows take on average about 30 seconds to download; sometimes 1-2 minutes. I even had one once take 5 minutes. Disgusting! @Ghost. My friend from the US had Netflix working through his PS3. However a while back they seemed to close the hole he was using and it doesnt work anymore. I'll check it out though, maybe there is another way. They dont have Netflix here >_< @ali. I'll look into VPNs. I guess if I have to pay though, it will be cheaper just to make a credit card and make an Aussie iTunes account. @Rybags. The card will be totally legitimate. I'm Australian. I'd simply open it through an Aussie bank. Actually, I dont want to visit Uncle, as I dont wish to be caught and penalised. I know the chance is very small but still, for me the risk is quite high. There have been a few people caught and they've gotten heavy fines and jail time. In my case, being a foreigner I believe there's a real chance of them adding permanent deportation to that list, which would mean I'd be fucked, you know, proper fucked. So being deported isnt worth an episode of something...although perhaps Ally McBeal might be worth it? O_o What? I forgot one company that does exactly what I want. dmm.com. It allows digital downloads. However take a guess what the content is. Yep, you guessed it - porn. So the porn industry is on the ball, and the rest of the distribution channels wish to maintain their anachronistic ways.../sigh

    Aikido

So I'm thinking about taking up aikido. Should I do it? I'm after a martial art that provides me with self defence, first and foremost. I work in an environment where on the odd occasion I need to restrain my opponent without doing any (or as little as possible) harm. Is aikido a good, practical self defence art? How long would it take to become efficient enough for self defence? I live in Japan, and there are a few aikido places around, among other types of martial arts. I'm not looking for an aggressive art. I also have my own separate aerobic and strength routines that I do, so the art doesnt have to specifically have those. I did 5 years of TKD as a teenager, and 4 years of kickboxing & jujitsu as a uni student. Although it's been a good 10 years since I've done anything except a bit of kendo. If not aikido, what other recommends? Cheers

    Backup help?

Thanks Devilsmurf, you've been awesome. The info is very helpful. Could I do the following with a NAS Raid 1 setup: Have 3 HDDs, for a two bay box. Keep one permanently in there, let's call it A. Mirror A to B, and take B out and put it in a waterproof/fireproof safe, and every now and then put it in the box for mirroring. Mirror A to C and take C to my parent's place and every so often bring it home to backup again. Or does the NAS box need to permanently have 2 drives in it? Do you recommended any backup software?

    Backup help?

Hi First off, I know next to nothing about backup, so please excuse any newb comments. I'd like to have a better backup solution for my data at home (assuming I need it). What I have: 2 Desktops, 1 Laptop. Also wireless router, optic fibre internet (Japan), PS3. Laptop/PS3 connected wirelessly. 1 External HDD 1TB (USB connection). Currently I just physically carry the external HDD about and manually copy files from the three machines via USB every so often. I dont have any schedule, I just do it when I remember to, which isnt that often >_> Once I've got all the data on the external HDD, I usually copy it across to one of the desktops to act as a second backup in case the HDD fails. However, I do that second backup even less than the HDD backup, basically because I dont often have the second laptop on and I'm frankly just being lazy. What I think I may need (correct me if I'm wrong): Two external HDDs that have the data copied on them. Two, in case one fails. I guess I'd need them to be able to be swapped out too. It would be good if this device could be accessed wirelessly too, so I dont have to carry it about, like the above HDD. Appreciate any help.

    Backup help?

Thanks for the reply. If I might further indulge your time. I dont know much about NAS, but it seems to be something I could use. Is it simple to setup? Do the two drives work like two external hard drives? For example, I could manually update both whenever I liked? Or have it done automatically if that is an option. Are there any demerits to the system? For example, a corrupt file on drive 1 gets copied to drive 2 where drive 2 had a good file but is now overwritten with the corrupt one. Cheers

    Aikido

It was probably for the beers afterward! There seems to be gradings every 3-4 months for those who are ready. They're pretty informal from what I can see. I havent seen any higher level ones yet. I did mine in June. My teacher came to me in May during class and said he thought I was ready, and if I liked I could try. Money wasnt mentioned at all tbh. It states on the forms I got when I joined how much things are. I paid a few days later. The teacher never demanded anything. Why the fascination though?
