    A word of caution

I would think peer review is not limited to the peer review process for journal submission. Just because the peer review process for journal submission may be flawed, does not mean peer review in general is flawed.

    Climate change issue resolved?

Midnighter - all the information you asked for is in the link I provided at the start, which is followed by a discussion with many people making the same points with evidence. I'm not going to go through and manually copy them. If you want to dismiss what I say because of that, I have no problem with that :) Leonid, you said you would provide links to papers that would back up your point. Adding the stipulation that tastywheat prove he has an account is ridiulous, and makes it seem as if you are trying to find a way out a hold you dug yourself into. It doesn't matter if he has an account or not. If you provide the references he can look them up on his account, look them through university, look them up through a public library etc. Like Wewise for anyone following the discussion who would be able to access Nature article, they can't because you won't back up your point. Whether Tastywheat has an account or not has absolutely nothing to do with the points being argued. I would also suggest you stop making absolute assumptions, at least about myself.
  3. Surely you mean proving their peers wrong?

    Steve's thoughts on flash

The link I provided states they *have* released the full specifications. Can you show that they have not? The source to a particular plugin is irrelevant here. Yep, pretty much the same as Flash.... None of your "Remember when" points had any relevance to the argument. Control has everything to do with it. It's the fact that you can't create a porn app and apple doesn't let you have it in the appstore that is my point. If they allowed Flash, they would be unable to prevent such a thing. That is the point! It doesn't matter that there are 100 other shitty little appstores for jailbroken phones that maybe 5% of iPhone owners access Yeah, I did. The Tick stated that the points I raised had already been addressed, and that I should read the thread before bringing them up again. I read the thread, and the arguments made were either subjective (flash is always slow for me!), or just erroneous. No, you're wrong, and appear to be getting very worked up about something without bothering to read up on it. No, I came in just giving my initial impressions. I'm not the poster who has had to resort to insults every step of the way.

    Steve's thoughts on flash

Can you provide a source for this? I'm going by this wikipedia page, which states that the format is available for use without restrictions. That has nothing to do with the point at hand. Apple is against Flash, so they won't bother creating one and the open source community is strongly opposed to anything that isn't free and open as Stallman defines it. Anyone can create their own implementation of flash. Just because we rely on Adobe to do it, is not an argument against the format not being open. Sure, and I would prefer to see it as an actual open standard. In the meanwhile from a purely practical standard, it is open. That may change, although I think it is unlikely since Adobe has pioneered the Open Screen Project, which has many other vendors on board. Thanks, I didn't know that FW and DP were now completely open. I knew that the fact that the USB controller could be implemented in software was a large contributed to it's dominance, but Apple charging and holding the patent also played a part. From wiki: "However, the royalty which Apple and other patent holders initially demanded from users of FireWire (US$0.25 per end-user system) and the more expensive hardware needed to implement it (US$1–$2), both of which have since been dropped[citation needed], have prevented FireWire from displacing USB in low-end mass-market computer peripherals, where product cost is a major constraint.[3]" Of course, that information says citation needed, so take it with a grain of salt. Until the patent holders decide to change it. In that sense, I'd say it's about as open as Flash. The connection is that Apple wishes to control what apps can be used on their platforms, to maintain control over their image. If Flash was available, they would not be able to have anything resembling the level of control they currently have. I agree HTML5 will replace a lot of what Flash is used for, but you can still write apps in Flash that would not be possible in HTML 5, as I understand it. The main thing HTML 5 is going to replace is Flash being used as a de facto standard for playing video. Fair enough, I read through the article and it didn't change anything. You'd do well to read this statement back, and apply it to yourself.

    Climate change issue resolved?

They do? Can you explain how you know this? Or is it just claimed in certain articles? Many people seem to keep making this claim, but I've yet to see any factual, solid figures, just claims. I am perfectly happy for you to link me to proof of this so i can be shown tho. Perhaps it is discussed because people are NOT convinced, and it is NOT a closed issue, despite the personal beliefs of some. Most "respectable" scientific institutions, individuals, organizations etc all seem to agree and there seems to be a consensus. The link I provided has some info on that. The people who disagree don't seem to be working in that field and seem to have an agenda. That makes it pretty simple for me.

    Steve's thoughts on flash

That's one definition. In more general terms, since the specification is available for use without restriction, and anyone is able to write an implementation that it is open. I agree it is a de-facto standard but disagree that it is closed. I am unsure about the examples you gave. FireWire and DisplayPort are not open. FireWire not being open was part of the reason USB surpassed it in popularity. WebKit is not a standard, just a rendering engine IIRC, while h.264 is not open at all. Hence mozilla not wishing to adopt it. Right? Apple occasionally does give back to the community, although I think this is the except rather than the rule, and is definitely not enough o class them as an open-friendly company. I disagree this is only for advertising revenue. This is because Apple wishes to maintain tight control over what apps people can purchase and run on there equipment. Surely the fact that many applications are denied or retroactively rejected, for seemingly no good reason?

    Climate change issue resolved?

I should not have said a majority of the scientific community, but a majority of the scientific community who work in a directly related field. It seems to be a closed issue, I just don't get why people are still discussing it. If you are not educated in that field, and the majority of people who do, and noteworthy institutions all reach the same conclusion, then why argue it? Yes, this is what I was getting at... It seems many people suspect scientists just come up with things to further causes, and don't really understand that theories being made are quite a different thing from the media twisting them for a purpose.

    Steve's thoughts on flash

I have not read the entire thread, just the original article. I think Steve's statement is very hypocritical, and untrue. 1) Flash is an open standard. The fact the current non-Adobe implementations suck, is not Adobe's fault 2) Apple is not in a position to lecture other companies on open standards, being one of the most proprietary and closed companies out there. 3) The reason apple does not want Flash on the iPhone is because they would lose their monopoly over iPhone applications.

    Scrubs season 9

Has anyone seen this yet? I just watched both episodes, and they were amazingly lame. The phrase 'trying too hard' captures the episodes perfectly, although I can see the season improving with time.

    Batman Arkahm Asylum secquel

From here: http://www.superherohype.com/news/batmannews.php?id=8909 A sequel to what most people have considered game of the year has been announced. I hope this time they actually make it a lengthy game with an interesting storyline, rather than the 6-7 hour story of the first.
  12. The Serenity class of ships, from Firefly. I never thought the ships from B5 looked terribly realistic at all.

    Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Where can you change the resolution :S I wouldnt say there were any RPG elements at all, just that you become more powerful as you progress. You can't really allocate stuff nor are there points as such....definitly no NPC's ala an RPG.

    PSA - Dexter Season 4

You are making the mistake of thinking the code is actually something akin to a numbered set of rules. It's not, it was closer to guidelines. Harry explicitly told Dexter not to have a family life, because it would distract him and he would slip up. He broke the code several times, and certainly changed it. Do you not recall the ending of Season 2? Dexter is separate from most serial killers because he is a vigilante who has a code, no longer because he blindly and loyally follows Harry's code.

    Singer returning to X-men franchise!

I felt the cure storyline in X3 was quite good. It highlighted the different attitudes in the community and highlighted how mutants are viewed by society in a different way from the first two films. It wasn't any worse than the turneverybodyintomutans storyline from X1. I also felt the movie had heart, especially with the rouge/bobby subplot. I really didn't think it was worse than the previous 2 at all. OTOH, I didn't think the previous 2 were that great either. Singer is a very talented guy, just not when it comes to superhero flicks. Whatever flaws X3 may have had, I'm sure they pale in comparison to those of Superman Returns.

    PSA - Dexter Season 4

What show have you been watching? Did you miss the multiple times in season 3 when he was getting closer to Rita and becoming a father figure? Did you miss the whole thing in Season 2 with Dexter losing confidence in the code and changing it to better suit him? Honestly, the code has been broken multiple times. Killing the wrong guy was not the first time, at all, by far.

    PSA - Dexter Season 4

His getting involved with Rita and having a personal life was all going against the code! A lot of Season 3 and the whole first half of season 4 has shown him to be going further and further away from the code, breaking it several times. I agree killing an innocent man was a major breach, but its significance was diminished by the fact that that he had been constantly breaking it and moving away from the code for a long time now.

    Iron Man 2 Trailer

The teaser isn't doing much for me, although I am looking forward to it. I'm actually quite interested in how things will go since his public identity has been revealed.

    Rate your most violent games

I honestly don't know. I think Batman got 15+, when there is no killing or shooting or gore, and is very much like the PG rated cartoon. Fallout 3 didn't seem terribly adult, and I'm not sure why it would be rated higher than 15+ The GTA games are very cartoonish, but given the subject matter they deal with, I can see them being more suited to an 18+ rating. Same for MW2. As for recent games that are actually very gory and would only be suited to an 18+ rating? I can't think of any examples.

    Singer returning to X-men franchise!

X3 wasn't that bad, and Singer isn't that great of a superhero film director. I'd much rather they got someone else in than either Singer or Ratner. I am curious what the story will be, since it is supposedly another origin story.

    Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

I've been playing it for a while...it is entertaining enough, although I am deeply annoyed that it is very obviously a console point, and provides no way to map keys, change video settings etc.

    PSA - Dexter Season 4

Spoilers: He had already been abandoning the code for a while. While killing an innocent should have been more of a thing, it wasn't the start of breaking the code. I liked it a lot better than season 3, which ultimately amounted to nothing.

    What cheeses you off?

Conversely, people who use ad blockers BUCUZ HATE ADS LOL, when the ads really aren't that bad. That's true but it is probably the exception. I use an ad blocker because I got sick of sites using flash to cover the page, or banner ads which slowed my system to a crawl. If I was aware of a site using non intrusive ads, I would probably enable it. Although I wonder if it would make a difference since I would never click on them anyway.

    PSA - Dexter Season 4

The problem I had with the season finale was that it seemed anticlimactic. Not so much a conclusion as a setup for season 5.
