    Erase and encrypt SSD

Thanks smakeme, I ended up unhooking all the other drives, formatting in Parted Magic and installing and this time it didn't make the partition thank god!
  2. I have a Corsair Force 3 SSD 120GB. I was making plans to wipe the drive, and encrypt it after my next installation, but it seems this process is a lot more ambiguous than with standard HDDs. Can anyone recommend the best method for erasing the old contents and encrypting the new contents of my SSD? By the way, it's nice to be back, my cat got really sick and I got really depressed so just stopped being interested in tech stuff for a while.. my shiny new computer has barely been used!
  3. In Windows 7, when I go to Control Panel->Network and Internet->Network Connections I see "Local Area Connection" and under this, above the name of the ethernet adapter is a name I wish to change. What is this name and how do I change it? Thanks. *edit This is in "tiles" view in explorer.. when I change it to "details" it says it is 'status' but still no clue how to change it! Figured it out! In Network and sharing centre, I had to click on the ICON of the network, which gave me a field to change the name. Yay!

    Erase and encrypt SSD

Thanks smakme, I erased the drive with Parted Magic and have been trying to use TrueCrypt to encrypt it, but kept getting a message that Windows is not installed on the same drive from which it boots.. turns out its the stupid 200mb partition Windows 7 makes, and which I entirely forgot about from last time (it kept installing it on different HDD) I have heard it is even more difficult to get it without the partition under SP1.. Any suggestions for getting everything in Windows 7 SP1 installed on the one partition on the SSD?

    Minecraft on OSX

My wife has been trying to install minecraft on her mac for a while now.. I am lost when it comes to macs, so have been little help, but for some reason she hasn't been able to get it working. Anyway, today she decided she would try installing the linux version and to my surprise it seemed to work, although it was jerky and ran out of memory after about 5 minutes (although I got the same error on my machine and had to start it via batch file).. Um so the mac version didn't work and the linux version did.. cn any of you apple buffs explain what is going on here? *edit* oh yeah, and what would be the equivalent of starting minecraft from a batch file in OSX (to solve the out of memory issue)

    Atomic forums archive pre 2003.

So I discovered the atomic forums archive a while back and it brought back some memories to see it in the old format.. I noticed it only went back to 2003 though, by which time I had stopped posting. In one of my frequent fits of morbid introspection I was looking forward to a shot of nostalgia by self-indulgently reading posts I'd written back in 2001, but was disappointed to see the archive only seemed to go back as far as 2003.. do the older posts still exist anywhere?

    Overclocking Inquiry

I thought that high voltages will degrade a chip even with sufficient cooling?
  9. Can someone help me understand why when I set core voltage to say 1.32 it shows VID in coretemp of 1.35 under load (1.23-1.31 idle) and why it gives the same readings when I change the voltage in BIOS to say 1.32?

Why was your motherboard out in the yard? :D jk
  11. Assuming you have tried enabling vsync? Chuckled at your title.. :)
  12. Yes I'm using the latest version of CPU-Z, and I've been using the Prime95 blend test. The settings I mentioned above were for 4.3Ghz, which seemed to be as high as I could go on all auto settings. I was trying to see how low I could take the voltage and have it still stable, but can't seem to drop it below 1.33 in the BIOS (which gives the above differing results inc Coretemp/CPU-Z) I found any OC over 4.3 required me to use "Multi-steps Load Line" of 6 or greater (8 for 4.9-5), I assume this is the same thing as LLC? Is it recommended to use this for a 24/7 OC and will it help me to get it stable at lower voltages if I enable it? Thanks for your help with this.

    Occupy Melbourne

Just watched this.. really excellent and eye-opening. Scary stuff!
  14. Well CPU-Z tells me that its's 1.044 idle /1.056 load when I set it in BIOS to 1.32 (and the same for 1.33), so now I'm even more confused! Not only because of the difference but again because it gives the same voltage readings when I change it in the BIOS. Which readings should I trust? I'd love to trust CPU-Z but surely those numbers can't be right for a stable OC?

    Occupy Melbourne

Some scarily oppressive police state shit from my lovely hometown of Perth in preparation for CHOGM/Occupy Perth this week: I concur! Source: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthrea...p;pagenumber=71

What disturbs me more than the fact that some idiot journo can write shit like that is that people find it funny. I remember now why I generally stay out of the green room discussions.

  20. Dude, keep your hair on. My tentative advice to look into that angle is hardly scaremongering; I'm plainly not definite about it, but it I wouldn't have said it if I wasn't afraid there was something to it. It's just something that's prolly worth looking into; I'd ask a social worker or someone about possible repercussions down the track. If I'm right, then it's hardly me perpetuating the stigma, is it? Or would you rather see stigma associated with bringing bad news? There are any number of ways to skin a cat, and depending on the luck of the draw, you might find talking to a doctor a waste of your time anyway. After all, it's not as if the OP's complaints are outside the scope of a bit of introspection and philosophy. No worries, my hair is on and all is fine, I just don't see why you are dissuading someone from getting help based on some kind of hunch. Whether you are right or wrong (and you are wrong) I think you are clearly perpetuating stigma attached to mental illness, whether this is your intention or not. But I want to reiterate again that there are absolutely no "repercussions down the track" for talking to a psychologist, this is disinformation plain and simple. It is a perfectly normal activity and will not result in anyone being "branded for life" with a mental illness as you suggest. The only thing I would say with mental health professionals is to be sure to find someone you have good rapport with.. if for any reason you don't "gel" with your counselor don't be afraid to look elsewhere until you find a good fit. As for social workers, if you are going to urge caution then I would urge caution in this area as they have far less training and it is a much less strict qualification (and the field tends to attract people who have had a hard life) you are much more likely to end up getting fucked over than if you go to see a psychologist or GP.

    Unique watercooling build

This is reminding me of when Homer assembles a tent around the open fridge and the family sits inside there on a warm day.
  22. "branded for life" for seeing a psychologist? FFS. Seeing a psychologist does not mean you have a mental illness, and it is completely confidential. People go to see psychologists and psychotherapists for all sorts of reasons other than mental illness.. counseling for stress at work, advice about relationship difficulties, family problems, mid-life crisis, death of a loved one etc, etc And if someone does have a mental illness you seem to be suggesting they should be afraid to seek help because you "have a feeling" they may be stigmatized for life. This is ignorant scaremongering, and you are actually perpetuating the kind of stigma against mental illness you refer to.
  23. There's a subsidy where a GP can refer you for 6 free sessions to a psychologist, and six more at the end of that.. might be worth it if you want to talk to a professional about your problems for free.

    Colonel Gaddafi Dead

As much as Bin Laden, Saddam, and Gaddafi are horrible people and stuff, it disturbs be how much the way they are presented by the media and hunted down by the US reminds me of Goldstein from 1984. For any heathen who haven't read it: "Goldstein's persona as an enemy of the state serves to distract, unite and focus the anger of the people of Oceania. Ostensibly, Goldstein serves an important role as both a convenient scapegoat for the totalitarian regime in 1984, and justifying reason for more military buildup, surveillance and elimination of civil liberties."
  25. My plan is to build a completely silent PC, ideally with no moving parts at all. Graphics are not a primary concern as this won't be primarily a gaming rig, but would be cool if I could put a fanless GPU in there down the track and use it with my two current PC's for the occasional LAN when people come over. I want it to be as powerful as a completely silent build can be, and would like to get some recommendations from fellow atomicans. The parts don't need to be the latest and greatest and I don't mind trying to find stuff secondhand. Obviously I'm thinking of case with maximum airflow and a controller for the CPU and case fans, so that they can be switched off for cokplete silence during recording tasks and other low power usage and switched back on when more power is required and silence is not so much of an issue (but it will still be as quiet as possible). So far my vague ideas are along the lines of: PSU: Silverstone 460 X fanless CPU: e8400 (65Watt TDP) Cooler: Silver Arrow Case: Coolermaster HAF? Lanboy Air? SSD: 120GB Later additions: GPU PowerColor Radeon HD6850 1GB Silent (127watt) Another SSD Would it be possible to run ivy bridge (77watt TDP) or even sandy bridge (95watt) cpus + a 6850 with the above PSU, or would it be pushing it? Would it be a good idea to overclock any of the above combinations on the 460W fanless PSU? I have wanted to do something like this for ten years now but the technology hasn't really been there for it until recently.. its still very much at an idea stage, so I would love all the feedback and advice I can get... basically if you were tasked with building a completely silent PC that is as powerful as possible, what would you do?
