Alex Jones may not be crazy after all.

I agree with Michael, I read those FBI pamphlets and I think they are completely unrelated to the laws going through at the moment, and actually make a lot of sense in some cases. The "quotes" in the article Director posted saying things like "paying cash for coffee" aren't actually written in the pamphlets. They say if the "pay cash, or use credit cards with a different name on a regular basis". I agree much of what the US government / FBI are saying is paranoia, but it is a proactive way to keep the public happy, and make it look like you are doing something against a threat some people think is a real one. A lot of people (myself included) wanted to know what the plan was directly after 9/11. People wanted the US government to do something. Now in hindsight, people realise what is carrying forward a decade later is wrong and arguably misguided. Some of what has been written here is genuinely concerning, but much of it is over dramatisation on policy. The reason this law got through is because the USA government obviously wants the freedom to act without restriction if they think there is a danger to the country. I agree that is a scary law to have, as it can be exploited grossly. At this point there isn't much anyone can do except hope they don't abuse this new power. The USA has had scary laws for a long time, some states still practice corporal punishment for crying out loud. Even the right to bare arms is fucking scary, The whole country could potentially shoot itself to death tomorrow. Why doesn't that happen? Sometimes you just need to trust that the worst-case scenario won't always happen, even though there is the potential for a huge disaster. Every second month it seems there is a threat to the world as we know it. North Korea is testing nuclear weapons, The Middle East has WMD's, China has secret nukes, Cuba is going to kill us all. Even the Cold War could have ended the world a few times over. Somehow these things don't trigger, and the human races survives to tell the tale. Will this new law end the world? Probably not, but let's just wait and see.

Did you drive the VW R36? I'd consider one of those if they were fun. Anyway, back onto helping Cyber instead of myself. My sister got a brand new Suzuki Swift a few years back for ~$18k with a couple of extras chucked in (Bose steroeo etc). She has had it for about 5 years now and the warranty has just run out. It's never had a problem and she loves it, I personally think it's a bit gutless, but then I also think my mums Mazda 6 (4cyl) is sluggish too and people seem to like those. Not sure if other people like the Swift.

    Animal cruelty.

I personally think it is more to do with obvious emotional healthiness (and physical) of an animal. For example, if you have a dog that cowers away when you raise your hand to pat it, the dog has had the shit beaten out of it enough that it associated human contact with pain. Not good, and definitely experienced animal cruelty. A dog that has been smacked when it did something wrong is fine (imo) as long as you don't go overboard, and it happens immediately after the dog did something wrong (e.g. you catch him eating your shoes). He will get a smack, you make sure of pointing out to him the shoes are the cause of this smack by having them in your hand. Other things don't work well with physical punishment from my personal experience with dogs I've owned. For example, pissing on the rug. It may be your first reaction to smack the dog, hit him on the nose with a rolled up newspaper or simply "rub his nose in it" but this isn't always the best method of dealing with it. He may start becoming nervous about going to the toilet as a whole, and not understand the problem was where he was going. In this situation positive reinforcement is the best method, when he goes inside, say bad dog and all that, then take him outside, show him where he needs to go, and leave him outside for a bit. When you see him going outside, give him a lot of attention, play some games and give him a treat. He will soon pick up on pissing inside gets him nothing, pissing outside earns him a play and a snack. Dogs are smart, and get depressed very easily if abused. They are also a pack animal by nature, and love being included in the family. If you can't do that, buy a cat. As for birds in cages, I understand your point, and there are certainly smart birds that I think are aware they are in a shitty little cage and become bored. I'm not sure at what level I would call it abuse, but I think if the bird gets let out every day or two there isn't too much a problem here. I think it is important that all animals have toys, even if it is just simple. Fish in little bowls I don't think is cruel unless it is clearly too small for the fish. Fighting fish etc live in puddles naturally, and enjoy small environment, so it's not a problem. Putting a fully grown Oscar in a 20L tank is a little cruel, and the fish will probably tell you that by becoming inactive and just sitting on the bottom of the tank the entire time. My grandad used to race greyhounds. They LOVED IT. They love running, they love being around the other dogs and they enjoy the "game" that the race track represents. If they win, or place, the owner will give them a big treat and extra attention. They have a huge incentive to win, and enjoy racing (from my experience). In training, you let them get the rabbit occasionally (not a real one, though some people used to train with real rabbits back in the day I've heard). It's essentially a big game to them, and chasing the rabbit is the most fun a fast dog like a greyhound can have IMO. I think you can tell a lot about an animals from their behavior and attitude, and if the animal seems happy I don't have too much of a problem with the way people look after their pets. if they look depressed, lethargic or generally unhealthy I'll ask the owner what the problem is.

    Re-watching Terminator 2

I click the .50cal machine gun on the back of transports in BF2/3 to the theme of Terminator 2 all the time. It strikes fear into the hearts of my enemies.

    Need a new car!

Can get a '96-'98 M3 for $17-$22K here. Pitty, they only cost $3-$6K in America :P If you want a new one, get it for $60K from the States, screw spending $200+ here. I own a MY11 WRX hatch. My mothers two dogs don't fit in the boot. I honestly think I used to fit more into my Golf with the rear seats down than the WRX. ' Thanks for the advice. Perhaps I will need to consider an Evo wagon then... For now I'm still in love with my Legnum, so probably won't make the change until 2014 or so. There is plenty of room in my current car, so if a new one doesn't offer a genuine reason to upgrade I may be stuck maintaining it for the next decade :P. Or until someone makes a good sized AWD wagon with enough engine capacity to keep me happy once more. I'd hate to drive a new Stagea as a last resort /shudders.

I said BF3 was the best shooter to come out for a long time, and I stand by it. Sure it has some bugs, but so does every game these days (and in the past). What shooter would you rather play? Oh that's right, Tribes. The game that has started and failed more than any other game franchise. They couldn't even give it away for free in the end. Jets move at the speed they do so players can target them with lock-on. If they were flying at 500m/s they would not only be hard to keep track of, they would also spend the entire game turning around and flying in circles (some do anyway). I'd personally rather a game mechanic that works (like slow flying jets) rather than one that makes the game shit because the dev was trying to be super realistic.

    Need a new car!

I'll be grabbing a WRX Wagon for my next car. Currently have a Mitsubishi Legnum VR-4. I think wagons are the way to go with a family. Can fit everything in the boot, plenty of room in the back and front seats, and only a few CM (if that) longer than your standard 4-door sedan. That being said, two of my mates drive a Carolla and love them.

You sound like a guy I know Orcone, his online handle is Rouge, perhaps you play Tribes with him? Is the game shit because you kept losing? Or because you kept losing? BF3 is the best shooter to come out for a long time. Just grab a couple of friends, jump on VOIP and have a good time. I guess that can be said for a lot of games though. EDIT: Also, what is with all of the Metro / Instant Vehicle servers? It seems like that is all anyone is playing at the moment. Very hard to find a good 32-48 Player server these days.

    Nvidia Kepler Rumors

Philo mentioned a 1GHz core clock somewhere on page 2 or 3, wasn't directed at anyone in particular though. Seems all of these rumour sites have different opinions on what clock speeds will be and even naming for some of the older articles. Hopefully we do see an April launch, even if it is only paper.

    Nvidia Kepler Rumors

Not twice. And with a 300W ceiling it definitely won't be double. Maybe 10% max. http://forums.atomicmpc.com.au/index.php?showtopic=264 HD6970 vs HD7970 880 MHz vs 925MHz 40nm vs 28nm 2640 vs 4313 million transistors 389mm2 vs 352mm2 Result: 198W vs 214W typical load. 254W vs 280W peak load. I'd expect Kepler to be more power hungry than AMDs cards but perhaps just a little more thirstier than current GTX 580 (~244W typical). It's not possible to run a core frequency of 1GHz and only be "a little thirstier". Anyway, from what people are saying 1GHz is a massive over exaggeration, 850MHz seems to be what most leak sites are saying now. That means its only ~80MHz higher than the GTX 580, that fits in with what I was saying before, as there was no way they were going to get a 1GHz clock and keep it under power. If it does release on 850MHz is will be bloody close to 300W I think. I just can't see how it is possible to keep it that far under given the progression and size of this thing. A GTX 580 already uses 280W under load. My bet is an 800MHz core clock is the release "official" frequency, but vendors will sell it at 850MHz just so Nvidia can cover their arse on official power draw. We also need to remember, the information we are basing the performance of the GTX 680 off is from lenzFire. A company that is already talking about the HD 8000 series and speculating release dates.

    Real Ghost Photo

So the other photos that had weird results are unrelated? Even though they were taken in the same building, with the same camera, on the same night? I would think it is all related. If other photos had anomalies it is all related, just because this one happens to resemble something to your imagination, while the others don't, doesn't make this photo any more credible to the existence of ghosts than the others do.

    Nvidia Kepler Rumors

But given the amount of cores and the physical size of the GPU we shouldn't expect Nvidia to match AMD clock speeds (if they can match them they made an extremely power efficient core design). The card should be hotter by design and simple physics, but who knows really. I would be surprised if they have almost doubled core/transistor count and clock speed simultaneously. If the GPU does indeed have 1024 shades compared to the old 512, it should in theory use close to twice the power. They are on a new process I know, so that drops power requirements by about the percentage of shrink (usually a loose rule of thumb). So lets say the jump to 28nm granted roughly a 30% power efficiency, the fact they have doubled core count puts power draw at roughly 40% more than the GTX 580, even after the die shrink. That could mean a very hot card if not cooled correctly. This means clock speeds could be limited because of this, and it is usually the way Nvidia play the game. With a more complex and larger die, boasting a lower clock speed, while AMD go for a simpler, smaller GPU die, with a higher clock (has been the case for a few years now). This means the GTX 680 could be a good card off the blocks, but really doesn't stretch its legs or show its potential until overclocked and cooled accordingly. I personally think this is the balancing act Nvidia are trying to iron out at the moment. No doubt the cards will go well on Water, Dry Ice, Phase and LN2 - Nvidia cards always have. What I want to know is how will it go when comparing apples to apples, on maximum stable overclocks (under 85C) on air. I can't see Nvidia making a card with their leaked specs and it running anywhere near AMD temperatures. of course they can do what they did with the GTX 480 and announce "we designed it to run at 110C".

    Real Ghost Photo

You said there were 5 or 6 other photos that had effects on them...? To me that means it could be a smudge that was only visible in certain light. For all we know it could be evaporated alcohol from a clean-wipe (not saying ti is, I still think it is light). So many variables and possibilities, Ghost is that last of them for me.

    Battlefield3 first thoughts.

Can't wait for the next big patch apparently the following changes may be appearing: SOFLAM will give 50-100 points to the Recon for designating/spotting (currently 10 for spotting and 10 for designation). Vehicle kill assist (driving while your gunner kills someone) will award 50 points instead of 10. (finally incentive to fly as opposed to gun in the chopper) Bolt-action sniper rifles will do greater damage at close-mid range, meaning 1-shot kills will be possible. Mid-long range damage will go largely unchanged. Javelin will receive 1 extra missile ammunition by default load out. There are bound to be more, but this is what I've heard from a games journo who interviewed EA / DICE recently.

    6950 Xfire Or 7950/70

I consider 40+ to be more than playable. As long as minimum stays above ~30 I'm a happy camper. If it starts dropping frames turning AA to 2x instead of 8 is a good start :P also a lot of Lighting effects go largely unnoticed and save a lot of performance. I do agree though, it may not run every game at max settings without flaw, but it does handle the vast majority.

Or allow a 7980 to be produced, sporting a higher stock clock of ~1100MHz. Not likely going to happen, but AMD could do it if they felt the need. It would be cheap to do, as it would just be a BIOS flash and silicon respin, so it could even just be a "refresh" of the 7970 - similar to the 4890 a couple of years back. Would cost nearly nothing to do (compared to the normal costs of a new model) and would at least guarantee better reviews at stock clocks.

    Real Ghost Photo

Except those shots are taken with a different camera from a different angle and with different lighting / shading on the photo. Also the top "head curve" thing you have on the top left isn't what you think, it is the patter on the wall behind falling into a shape similar to that of the ghost outline adding to the illusion. If you compare the top two photos closely you can see that. I'm sorry, I still think you need to at least use the same camera if you are going to compare the shots. The argument is that the camera is picking up the light causing the "ghost effect" and you aren't even using the same camera to prove that this was a one-off shot with an actual ghost in it.

    Battlefield3 first thoughts.

I wanted to quote this from the BF3 thread that is now locked and bring it over here. Nes are you COD supremacist or just unaware of the BF mod history? Can't really hold much against you if you are just unaware of Project Reality, even though it was (is?) a hugely popular mod for BF2. If you are a COD "fanboy" I will have to make sure to shoot you double if I see you on the battlefield :P In one of the first releases for the mod (Project Reality) the ability to spawn on squad leaders was removed, with the only option to spawn anywhere off a captured point being in special "spawn vehicles" or on a beacon placed down by your squad leader. EA /DICE have openly confirmed they were hugely influenced and inspired by many features in Project Reality, and also BF2 and Desert Combat (1942 mod). They tried to take the best of it all, and I think they did a good job. There is no way you can claim however, that they "stole mobile spawn points from MW2". Given that PR came out in 2005 (maybe earlier in BETA) and MW2 was 2010, I find it hard to see how BF copied COD. This is the way spawning works in PR: (it was simpler a year or two ago than it is now).

    Nvidia Kepler Rumors

No one assumes the GTX 590 is twice as fast as the GTX 580. As you said SLI scaling is not 100%, and the core clock is also lower, so yes, it makes sense that the card is not as good as it could be in theory. While the stats on the GTX 680 do indeed look impressive, the same things were said early on about the GTX 480 and it's core count / architecture. It was a "good" card, but fell short of what it could have on paper. That being said, Nvidia have had a lot of time to work on this card, and I feel it has been where they moved their focus after the failure of the GTX 480 as the 580 was really a quick-fix and filler. It could certainly be as good as people are predicting, and I for one hope it is. It will give me something to play with on LN2, and that will mean the GTX 670 will give almost perfect competition to the 7970 for my home PC, making sure both cards are produced in the most cost effective manner to compete for our dollar. Either way I'm happy as long as Nvidia have a card to compete with the 7970 soon, and as long as both cards overclock well. I'm going to go out on a wild guess and call a 15-20% performance boost over the 7970, and the 670 will be pretty much on par. I still can't see a 40% lead on the GTX 680.

    6950 Xfire Or 7950/70

It's capable of any game at 2560 res TBH. I'd hold off if you can though, a 6950 is a good card and should easily last you until Nvidia get their shit together. Buy a 7970 once the Nvidia cards are out and save a couple' hundred bucks.
  25. Yer, sorry Nes, that's a load of rubbish. I'd be pretty comfortable saying I've had equal issues and pleasures with both companies in the past. Sucks you couldn't get a 6950 for $169, that is a steal!
