    Ultrawide FHD

I've been thinking about a multiple monitor or a larger display for some time now as the 24" just seemed too small. Yesterday I decided to give a 21:9 Ultrawide FHD monitor a try. After looking at various reviews I settled on the 29" LG29EA73-P. It took a while to realise the ASUS R9 280X has two DVI connections however only one of them is dual link. With that resolved I was able to select 2560x1080 resolution and get underway. The R9 280X is happily rendering the extra pixels with no noticeable difference in frame rate and the monitor is not displaying any noticeable lag so I'm pretty happy so far. The only drawback I've noticed is a slight glow in the lower right corner when rendering a fully black image however this is not noticeable in normal use. I'm now considering connecting the old 24" FHD display as a second monitor for teamspeak etc. What do people recommend - is it better to connect it to the GPU or to the onboard graphics? I'm not planning to extend the gaming display over two monitors. Cheers, Peter

    Ultrawide FHD

Liking the extra screen area/FOV - can't really find any cons at this stage.

Atomic Main Screen flicker in IE11

I have two pc's that refuse to cooperate with the Atomic main web page - I keep getting a constant refresh of the screen that prevents me scrolling down the list of menu items. I have other laptops that display the page normally. Has anyone else encountered this and is there a fix? Cheers, Peter
  5. I've used "Who Crashed" a couple of times with what I believe was reasonable success. It names the driver involved. In both cases I updated the driver and the BSOD issue went away. Anyone else had any experience with Who Crashed?

    BF4 Naval Strike Postponed?

I was expecting Naval Strike to be released today - looks like it's been postponed. Has anyone heard what went wrong?

    telephone line surge protection

I've had an ADSL modem/router fail following nearby lightning strike - everything else survived so I assume it was phone line related. I've now wired the incoming phone line through a surge protector and haven't noticed any impact on ADSL performance. I've been looking into having surge protection added to the junction box as it is a lot more cost effective than installing surge protected power boards around the house.

ok - got it worked out - needed to disable the intel integrated graphics. All good now.

    BF4 + BF3 Q

Installed AMD 14.1 beta tonight. BF4 plays fine until I try to access settings (to try and select Mantle) then it freezes and requires restart. Any thoughts on whether this is a driver issue or a BF4 issue?

    BF4 + BF3 Q

Finally got around to installing an SSD for BF4 yesterday. Decided on a Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB. I ended up moving all the Origin games (90GB) onto the SSD and leaving the Steam ones on the WD HDD. Only issue I had was with China Rising - had to delete the xpack1 directory and re-download/install to get this to work. It is a big improvement on load times for BF4.
  12. Playing Battlefield 4 last night I started to get a whole lot of graphics artifacts appear. Tried turning the video quality down however this didn't help. Quit out of game and then re-joined on a different server and the problem went away. Increased the video settings back to high - still no problem. Is it possible the artefacts are something to do with a particular server or is that just likely to be a coincidence? Cheers, Peter

    BF4 + BF3 Q

So I've got it already installed on a HDD along with all the other Origin and Steam games. Has anyone had success cut and pasting it to another SSD? I really don't want to have to go through the download/reinstall process if possible. Cheers, Peter

    BF4 + BF3 Q

Is there a way to have BF4 on a SSD with the rest of Origin/games on a HDD or does it all need to be on the same drive? Also interested to know what software was used to display the resource usage in the previous post?
  15. Stock hit the shelves this afternoon in Brisbane so I've pulled the trigger. Unfortunately too late to pick up today but should have it tomorrow afternoon. Despite the price premium I've gone for an ASUS Matrix Platinum R9 280X. Can't wait to try it out! Next question - currently have ATI CCC 13.9 installed with Sapphire HD7870 OC. Should I be un-installing CCC and starting from scratch with ASUS install software? There doesn't appear to be any Sapphire specific software installed on the system. If uninstall and start fresh is the way to go, any suggestions on the best way to do a clean uninstall? Cheers, Peter

    Pulled the trigger R9 280X

Liking the new card. I've been updating the drivers as new ones get released (and un-installing the old ones first). Planning to sell the 7870 but haven't got around to it yet.

Graphics artifacts related to game server?

In terms of temps is looks to be maxed out at GPU 75C, Mem 67C, Board 74C, Power 75C and VDDCI 57C. This is the setup of the HS: http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-...tinum-review/2/

Graphics artifacts related to game server?

I think I can do that in ASUS GPU tweak - will give it a try. If not there is a nice red button on the card that puts the fans at 100%.

Graphics artifacts related to game server?

The temps don't seem to exceed these values (ie 75C GPU is the highest it gets and it stays at this temperature if I back off the quality settings and turn Vsync off) - perhaps that's the way the fan profiles are set (seem to stop around 40%). The HAFX should be good fans going front to back/top. Also fan in side panel blowing onto side/underneath the GPU. There is actually more fans blowing air out than in with all fans running max however I have a controller so can change the air flow around - tried this but it makes no real difference to the temperatures.

Graphics artifacts related to game server?

Spent most of today playing with graphics settings. I'm finding the artifacts quite sensitive to Antialiasing and Post Processing settings in particular. I've got it running happily with the following combination of settings: Texture Quality, Texture Filtering, Lighting Quality, Mesh Quality, Terrain Quality all set to ULTRA. Post Processing Quality set to HIGH Terrain Decoration set to LOW AA Deferred and AA Post set to OFF Ambient Occlusion set to OFF Motion blur set to OFF Vsync set to ON It is consistently sitting on 60fps with this setup. In terms of temps is looks to be maxed out at GPU 75C, Mem 67C, Board 74C, Power 75C and VDDCI 57C. I started out with Vsync off and much lower quality settings and was still seeing these same temperatures. I checked the room temp and it was 29C so quite a hot day to be pushing things. I can increase AA Post to Medium but have to reduce Post Processing Quality to Low to prevent artifacts. Haven't tried playing with Ambient Occlusion yet however I'm lead to believe it is pretty taxing on the GPU. I was surprised to see the AA Post have such an impact as various websites suggest it is not that hard on the GPU. In any case I'm not noticing any jagged edges so might just leave the AA off. Is this consistent with what others are experiencing with ATI7970/R9 280X cards?

Graphics artifacts related to game server?

I've given it a dose of CCleaner and installed the latest beta drivers this arvo. So far so good!

Graphics artifacts related to game server?

Would you expect a driver issue to be specific to a game and not be an issue in others?

Graphics artifacts related to game server?

The strange thing is it continues even after changing to low settings until we switched to a different server then it was fine on high settings. The ASUS matrix has an LED indication of "card loading" (not sure how it works). The issue doesn't seem to correlate with card loading. It's been playing all morning today without any issue. I'm going to be pretty disappointed if I have to reduce the GPU/Memory OC to make this card stabe - it is a factory OC on ASUS flagship card with a heatsink big enough to sink a ship. Also it doesn't seem to have any issues running Heaven or Valley benchmarks on quite high settings and haven't seen any issues in COD Ghosts - seems to be Battlefield 4 specific and only sometimes. Re V-Sync, I've had that enabled as I couldn't see the point of rendering frames at a rate higher than the monitor could display. Just had a look at the max temperatures for this morning: GPU 63degC Memory 59 degC Board 62 degC Power 66 degC I've seen them hotter running Valley.

Graphics artifacts related to game server?

Looks a bit like this - not quite as bad: The setup is described in detail in the signature block - ASUS R9 280X GPU. Using AMD Catalyst 13.11 beta 9.2 driver.

    CPU Graphics - Disable?

I've been happy with the Z77 Extreme 6. Had some display issues but have put that down to the previous Sapphire graphics card. The new ASUS card seems to be going well though.
