PC RPG Mods

Recommended Posts

As per Ezkaton's post in the non-stickied Skyrim Mods thread ( http://forums.atomicmpc.com.au/index.php?s...st&p=982484 ), I'm linking up the games.on.net Recommended Skyrim Mods list.

http://games.on.net/article/14996/Make_Sky...Recommendations

We PC gamers don't hate consoles. Honestly, we don't. At times, we even love them (unless you're playing Dark Souls, in which case, burn that thing immediately for your own safety!). We will admit, however, that there are some unfortunate concessions to be made when a game is touting its cross-platform release. On the one hand, it's good news for your aged graphics card. On the other, that's because the game isn’t always going to look as good as it could.

And that's where we come in. Bethesda's games have always been fantastic structures to build upon, and boy, do the modding community build. Since the Steam Workshop launched a few weeks back, there have been over four thousand mods released in to the wild, and that's not counting those released at traditional sites like The Skyrim Nexus.

The problem with big lists? They're... big lists. Scrolling through the Steam Workshop isn't everyone's interpretation of fun, so we've trudged through the mud and gotten our own boots dirty to bring you a top ten list with a twist. We've taken a look at the mods that help elevate Skyrim to the kind of PC release it could should have been, providing you with the perfect base to build your own, unique, Skyrim experience on top of.

What follows that is a "Top 10" of their chosen best Skyrim mods. From what I could see, without actually having had the opportunity to try them myself, it looks like a solid and well-rounded set of choices.

Thanks cybes, added =] It's a pretty tiny list, I'm sure Thanks cybes, added =) I'm kinda disappointed that an official skyrim mod list does not appear to exist yet in spite of its age - I'd make one myself but I'm just not gaming much at all these days.

been a while dasa =] I'll probably keep this thread RPG only as it's already huge - but there really needs to be a resource somewhere for "best mods" in general.

Heh, out of curiousity I just looked to see if bestmods.com is taken...it is, by some squatter x(

I just happened across a reddit thread which mentioned a couple of Morrowind mods:

= Morrowind 2011 v2

+ No download link that I can find atm - apparently the compiler didn't ask permission from the individual mod authors, so it may have been pulled.

+ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhuHaNX93_s

= Morrowind Overhaul

+ http://morrowindoverhaul.net/

+

- Check out the atmospheric fog casting shade rays in bright sunlight toward the end of that clip! Gorgeous.

And still on the Morrowind kick, though it's not really a mod - a total overhaul for Oblivion:

= Morrowblivion

+ http://morroblivion.com/

You're welcome. :)

The thread's been static for so long I was starting to wonder anyone still cared. But I guess that's just the nature of RPG's, really.

Mass Effect Hybrid Combat

http://www.moddb.com/mods/eudaimonium

The mod does bridge the heat clips of 3 with the constant fire of 1. I think this is a well-done mod. There is a slight bug in that during the tutorial where you need to reload, you have to empty the 30 or so shots before you can reload.

Skywind - Total overhaul for Skyrim, that recreates Morrowind in the new engine. That link points to the FAQ, which you probably want to read first.

It's the same guys who did Morroblivion.

Wow that was prompt! ( Unlike my response to the update. ;P )

I was beginning to fear the thread had died.

As the world waits for the release of Star Citizen, many of us are going back to play its predecessor, Freelancer.

The following is a guide to getting this game from 2003 to look as good as possible on today's hardware. This guide is up to date as of August 2014 for a VANILLA PLAY THROUGH WITH GRAPHICS MODS ONLY

First and foremost backup your Freelancer\EXE folder, this is where a lot of the game-crashing changes can happen

The Must Haves

  • Download Unofficial 1.4 patch and fix that shiz up.
  • Download and install Jason's Freelancer Patch v1.20 (3.1M)
  • This adds more patches/fixes, wide screen/high res support, camera fixes, mouse fixes. Note: This adds HUDSHIFT which MUST be used with the Windowless Border Gaming App to keep from crashing when saving when you Alt-Tab.
  • Windows 7+ apparently are missing the Agency FB Font - install from here
  • SWAG PACK HD Texture Compilation
  • This incorporates the Full HD and Starsphere Texture pack below, a mix of other HD textures, and HD Hud graphics. Extract to Freelancer Folder.

    Be sure to Delete d3d8.dll in Freelancer\Exe after installing since it turns on this gross dark ENBseries.

  • Download Freelancer Mod Manager and install . Point it to your freelancer directory when it asks.
  • Download HD Asteroids. Adds 2048x2048 asteroid textures. Double click the file to open in Freelancer Mod Manager. Activate it to install.
Optional/Recommended stuff
  • Freelancer FULL HD - Textures Only
  • More info here The Swag Pack comes with most of the textures included EXCEPT textures for large space crafts (planet docks, ports, space stations, travel lanes) but these are even higher def (and darker in color) if you are looking for an alternative. I recommend you install this OVER the swag pack above. Extract to Freelancer folder.
  • Realistic Lighting Mod for FMM
  • This tones down ambient lighting in space so ships/environments have a higher number or panels/spots where light does not shine. Double click the file to install to FMM then activate and choose the % you want to lower the ambient lighting. People suggest 10%-30% but experiment.
  • SweetFX - Adds Sharpening, Contrast, Anti Aliasing, better lighting. Unzip to Freelancer\EXE and Use Scroll Lock to toggle off and on.
Optional For Radeon/Nvdia users, you'll want to either use the control panel or Radeon Pro to force 8x AntiAliasing and 16x Anisotropic Filtering. If you are using an ENB mod do NOT force AntiAliasing or it will disable the features.

SpeedMod ( Included with FMM) It lets you increase your cruise speed (like warp speed) and I highly recommend you enable it to 1200/3000 so you arent spending so much time getting to your destinations.

There followed a list of links, several of which were broken by now. So, after digging for a bit, I found most of them. No guarantees as to how long they'll stay valid.

Agency FB Font - Windows 10 does in fact have this font. But if you're still on 7...

Full HD Textures

The above quote says the SWAG pack incorporates some of these, but this linked version has newer timestamps on the duplicate files than SWAG - some by years. <shrug> Up to you.

Realistic Lighting

Sorry. :( I did find a link, and download a copy, but by the time I went to post this it was gone. If anyone desperately wants it, I guess I can upload it to 4Shared or something.

SweetFX

http://www.mediafire.com/download/w0fg4b9sukaqw66/ReShade+1.1.0+with+SweetFX+2.0.7z

Actually, this is for ReShade, but includes SweetFX. I have yet to try it out, but if the extra turns out to be a problem, SweetFX seems fortunately to be very easy to find currently.

Oh, and just while I'm at it...

https://sfx.thelazy.net/games/preset/2040/

That's a SweetFX preset for Freelancer. Yeah, it's not on the list, but it turned up while I was looking for SweetFX, so...why not?

Edit1: Doh! Been a long day, obviously - clean forgot to pass on how to make it play nice with 1920 Widescreen. You should probably do this bit first - at least, I did, but I also managed to fuck it up a few times along the way and had to redo it at the end, so...

Anyway.

Edit2: Only do this rez edit once you have a savegame already in space, or on a landing pad. Similarly, if you've adjusted your display, do NOT load a new session from any save that is not on a landing pad, or already in space. If you do, you will be unable to get to the pad to take off. The navigation bar will be set to a position now off-screen between sessions, and only gets put back to your settings when you hit space - but if you're on the pad, a little bit of the "launch" selection shows. If you're in the bar or something, you're SOL and will have to reset to a lower rez, then re-edit your PerfOptions.ini again.

Not a game-breaker, but it's a pain in the arse.

  • Open up "<user>\Documents\My Games\Freelancer\PerfOptions.ini" in your favourite text editor. Find [Display], and change the "size" line to "size = 1920, 1080". Note the space! It won't work if you omit it.
  • Edit "\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\EXE\Freelancer.ini" size line in the same fashion.
  • Edit "\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\DATA\Cameras.ini" to read like this:

    [WinCamera]

    fovx = 65.55

    [CockpitCamera]

    fovx = 80

    znear = 2.000000

    [ThirdPersonCamera]

    fovx = 80

    [DeathCamera]

    fovx = 80

  • Edit "\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\DATA\rich_fonts.ini" to:

    [TrueType]

    font = 0, Arial Unicode MS, 16

    font = 1, Agency FB, 16

    font = 2, Arial Unicode MS, 16

    font = 3, Agency FB, 16

    font = 4, Agency FB, 16

    font = 5, Agency FB, 16

    font = 6, Agency FB, 16

    font = 7, Agency FB, 16

  • Last step, but this one is a doozie: Replace the contents of "\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\DATA\fonts.ini" with:

    [TrueType]

    nickname = ButtonText

    font = Agency FB

    fixed_height = 0.0370000004768372

I suspect a forum post may not be the best way to keep this going. Do you have any thoughts?

TBH, I don't really see how else you could do it. At least, not on this sort of scale.

You could do it nicely with a GameFAQs-like website, but either maintenance would get to be a nightmare very fast, or you'd need your own farm for the storage to mirror all the mods yourself.

BTW, that was spectacularly quick. I had no idea you were still around, dude. :)

I still haunt the corridors here and there :)

It's a tricky problem. This post basically competes directly with Steam Workshop and NexusMods. The difference is it has a niche - any and all PC RPGs, as well as curation - both nexus mods and steam workshop can let any crap come in and detract from the good stuff.

I wouldn't attempt to mirror all the mods myself - links to mods like my post are probably "good enough" for now. I was actually thinking something more like a wiki. Something that a handful of dedicated modders maintain for their own purposes, that just happens to be useful for other people too. Problem is, what wiki is powerful enough for the purpose?

There, I'm afraid, I can't help you at all. Last time I had diddly to do with this sort of thing, Wiki hadn't been invented yet! :p

And yeah, I thought of Nexus about 30 minutes after I made the post. Came to the same conclusion: they're a catchment; this is a filter.

It's been going for literally years, CL. I can only assume you don't frequent this sub?

Yeah, I think it's the "stickies become kinda invisible" thing more than me not visiting. I try to wander through all sections periodically, but I have apparently missed this thread each time.

Oh hi Chaos.Lady. You might not know about me, but I know about you! xD

Yeah, this version of the thread is literally years old. The previous thread that inspired this back in Atomic 2.0, if it were still going, just hit 10 years of age last week

http://archive.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.asp?s=1&c=12&t=10873

Just realised I "quit single player RPGs" in that thread. That sure didn't last long :P

Heh, I have the opposite problem. I know there are many wikis around, and I could also build my own entirely from scratch if need be. Just the hard question of what would be best for the people.

More important question Cybes, if I were to set up such a wiki, would you want to add to it? :)
