Worklog: Lambo's Mame Cabinet

Recommended Posts

For years I've been meaning to get around to building a MAME/Arcade cabinet, but never had the time nor the space in which to do it. So since I've now have my own house and space to build I thought it was time!

I started with the actual joysticks. I contemplated making the whole thing myself, but I stumbled upon this: Reply Arcade

These guys import X-Arcade products. Initially I was going to go for the one without a ball mouse, but since I do like a bit of tiger woods golf sometimes, I couldn't resit going for it. It wasn't cheap, @ $340.00inc but at least it was free freight.

It arrived early this week, and my god it weights a bit. 10 odd KG's. So at least it's sturdy. Even has buttons on the side for those pinball games I love to sometimes play.

Next the chassis. There are a billion designs out there. I ended up adapting something I saw here: www.arcadecab.com and Ron Prouses design from Atomics 82/83/84.

The results so far are here:

More updates to come as work goes on. Still thinking on the theme I want for the paint job.....

I'm still 50/50 on the LCD or CRT.

Of course the CRT would be better for MAME, but I want to also play alot of current PC titles that the LCD would be better for.

Still deciding on that.

It's looking awesome. What are you going to use as the "engine"?

I have an older 3500+ which should be fine. Tho depending on what I want to play, I might lash out on new hardware.

I should note the reason I'm leaning toward LCD is that it's has HDMI, and they X-Arcade joystick supports both XBox and Playstation. So down the track I can add consoles without really need to modifying anything.

I used to run both my XBox 360 and PS3 through a 22" monitor with HDMI and VGA inputs.

PS3 through HDMI and XBox 360 through VGA.

Awesome to see someone else building something. I posted my arcade stick here a while ago and got no responses, so I had it moved to Console Games.

The next thing I want to do is build a MAME machine.

This is looking awesome Lambo. I wish I had the money/room/skill to build an arcade cabinet. I think I'll have to settle for my PC at the moment, though.

Looks pretty swish!

I'll be following your work log eagerly, as I have a half finished MAME cabinet here at home also (got distracted by SFIV stick, and the car breaking down /sigh).

Thanks for the kind words:

More updates!

I put in a lower hidden shelf for a keyboard/mouse. Just in case I need to make adjustments.

The frame for the monitor. Was very lucky as it was MM perfect. I also put a trim on the top part.

Nice build Lambo.

I have a load of buttons and joysticks on order from replay, and an IPAC2 emulator from the Australian distributor, which both will be showing up next week.

I would be impressed to have something half as good looking as your build.

You'll have to put yours up as well.

This is on my list of "projects to do". Gaming for me really began with Wolfenstein 3d and Mortal Kombat arcade. Glad to see people bringing back arcade.

What are you going to do with the speaker holes? Just cover them in mesh or something?

Something like that.

So in anticipation of completion, what games are on your first play list? :)

When you get it all done I'd also be interested to know what it ended up costing for all the materials and everything.
