windows 7 4890 artifact problems

Recommended Posts

hey guys, i jus put together a new machine.

i've put windows 7 on and works great.

i'm currently having problems trying to get a catalyst driver version to work.

I've got a Sapphire 4890 Vapor-X.

i've tried catalysts 9.5,9.6,9.7

i've tried searching the net for similar problems but mine aren't that bad.

it detects. updates the driver, screen goes out.. comes back with artifacts.

i can still see and make out enough of my screen to remove the driver from device manager and the generic one works good.

thanks guys, it's probably something simple i've missed

What's a good systematic approach from here?

i tried running 9.4. i've been using Driversweeper.

thinking possible could also have to do with monitor?

it only artifacts when in windows proper. not on log in/log out.

at the moment going to flash bios to current version to see if that helps.

monitor is an Asus VW222U.

mother board is EP45-UD3P

when i go to choose a COMPATIBLE driver, it lists 3. two of which are "4800 series" drivers and one standard VGA that i'm using. having a look at "other" drivers it had most things listed specifically.. eg 4870, 4870x2 drivers.. but no 4890 specific driver..

might try and grab Vista 64 from someone or swap monitors soon....

its possible the card is faulty

make sure the card is seated properly and has both power conectors

try atitool artifact test (i think it works with 4890) and see if it finds artifacts or makes it worse

do you have any parts or pcs to swap around? if not you may just have to send it back and hope they swap it over

i had issues with not seating it properly i think earlier when i put it together. sometimes boots no display. now it's fine after pulling it on and off. yep both power cables are on.

Windows version 7100.

i'll try ATItool now but i'm heading out for the day. might borrow someone's screen on the way back home..

i hope it's not defective....

cheers

another thing i'm worried that even though i've tried different driver sets... is windows still just choosing what it wants?

do you guys know how to force a specific driver onto the device with windows 7?

i tried have disc with one file i found on the net but even though "manual browsing" could see it, it wouldnt let me actually use it... jus makes windows noises when i click OK..

there's a consistent vertical strip on the far left about a couple of icons wide, that is consistently clear and clean. regardless of windows and objects i move in and out of it. everything else is a mess. mouse pointer is fine though where ever it goes.

i'll call the people i bought it from and see what they say...

ATItool is running "no errors 7mins in... mostly it's display is clear but the right hand third of it is atifacting.. excuse if these posts have typos, i can't see what i'm doing...

it remains aritcat in the clear prtion of my display tho...

Hey guys,

after swapping PCIe ports and monitors around i was about to give up on the card...

just reinstalled windows 7 and the first thing i did was use Catalyst 9.7. rebooted and now all good.

Thanks to all who read my ranting and thought of ideas it may have been...

now to try out 3dmark and see how it goes.

if anything comes up i'll post again.

thanks again and sorry about the panic attack =}

it came back.

ran 3dmark right through no problems,.

installed some stuff, firefox, cpuid, realtek onboard driver etc

was running orthos and real temp as i'm testing overclocks.

just came back to comp and it's artifact all over again.

i'll put everything back to stock standard bios settings and then reinstall windows again and see how that goes...

i scored something like 15900 in 3dmark06.

so does that mean it's win7?

i wont put anything else on except firefox and 3dmark and run stock settings and find a game to put on and play.

Sounds like its not stable at those clocks, use rivatuner to take it back to 850/975 and see what happens.

ah ok will do, i'll pull back the 4890 clocks

oh and with the system overclocks, i only started doing it after i got tired of looking solutions to the graphics problem.

but i'm gonna try with out them anyway

EDIT: oh and another thing.. on occasions, the 4890 fan speeds up to max when i turn the comp on and then no display. pc speaker emits sounds like long then short beeps real quick...

turning off and on gets it to turn on properly.. i thought that it might have been becasue i keep reseating and fiddling with it.

i've unplugged and reconnected both psu cables to mother board & both on the card.

Its been so long since I have diagnosed anything with a speaker, what is it 2 beeps is a RAM problem and 3 is a graphics problem?

hmm maybe it's 3 and and i didnt notice one..

hey guys i just put Win 7 on.

i stopped windows from auto updating and had a look at what it wanted to install.

there's a "ATI Radeo HD 4800 series" driver that's im gonna block for now.

Who would you trust? Catalyst 9.7 or Windows 7 auto update?

Installed catalyst 9.7. blocked windows auto update of radeon driver.

installed firefox & avira antivirus.

just downloaded Rivatuner and will bring clocks back to Reference speeds..

i've noticed some small artifacts twice now but they go away.

EDIT: its Rivatuner 2.24 but doesnt have the info for the video card... so i dont think i can..

i left the comp on installing windows live's update to play GTAIV and i came back it was artifacted again...

i'll take the card back on monday to the store. ask them to test it with another system or something.

if i had Vista64 lying around i'd try that.

but yeh what nesquick said sound possible... this Vapor-x is factory OC... maybe it is unstable... even if i did tune it down, it's not what i paid for... (not that i mind, just the principle)

...hmm is it possible i miss handled it and the heatsink isnt cooling it efficiently?..

i've given it a visual inspections and didnt see anything obvious.....

motherboard's firmware is up to date...

thanks again guys for reading.

EDIT: Beep code is: 1 long, 1 short: Memory or motherboard error

1 long, 2 short: Monitor or graphics card error

(another 2 points to nesquick)

its possible u killed the card with static or its possible the card is just a dud it happens

it sounds like a faulty card. give the 9.2 Catylists a go, I found them very stable compared to some later ones, tho' 9.7 seems to be okay.....yeh, as a last resort give the 9.2's a whirl, use Driver Sweeper to clean up the old drivers (get it from guru3d)

if that doesn't work, I'd call the card faulty.

To allow rivatuner to see your card you need to edit the cfg file with a very minor change.

go c>program files>rivatuner>open rivatuner.cfg with notepad

scroll down to the line RV770 and highlight it and paste this in its place RV770 = 9440h-9442h,944Ch,9460h it will allow you full control of the card.

Thanks nesquick.

i have control of my card now but it's on it's lowest settings 870 core clock & 1050 memory clock.

EDIT: NEVERMIND i'm an idiot.. i can slow it down but won't just yet

like i said i was giving up on this card.

but right now it works fine....

going by my previous posts, if this lasts for more than 1 & 1/2 hours then it's improved from previous.

also i have not done a fresh windows install like last time.

i just came home and edited Rivatuner and installed 9.7 catalyst to try throttling back but it's all clear now.

so like i said earlier today i gave up on the card and began install all updates again for windows (including a 4800 series driver which i remove from device manager, continue running Standard VGA)

i also installed some other CD items for my peripherals.

because i gave up on my card, i began overclocking my cpu & ram again. including increasing MCH, CPU, Ram voltages. i just completed 3 & 1/2 hours on orthos & prime95. temps do go more than 51c.

so now i guess i'll run 3dmark again. try get GTA4 running and wait a couple of hours to see if it returns. but i havent been able to have a clear screen like this before with catalyst without reinstalling windows...

what do you guys recommend to stress the GPU?

i've had 2 successful 3dmark06 runs... one with overclock cpu & ram, one at standard cpu and loose ram.

could increasing MCH voltage affect it?

E8400 e0 @ 3780MHz (9*420)

Vcore 1.25 in bios, CPUID says 1.216

PCIe was always set to 100MHz, never AUTO

MCH voltage is 1.3v (that's the newest change)

ram voltage is 2.1v PC6400 team dark xtreem @ 840MHz 5-5-5-10

EP45-UD3P Rev1.6

Corsair Hx620w

Antec 902

Scythe Mugen 2

i think i can drop voltages but i've increase because i crash whilst Realtemp's sensor test cpu cool down test freezes my comp.

yet i could run prime & orthos for like 2 hours np.

sorry long ass posts.

Thanks for reading :)

check back in a couple of hours for an update :P

well, it's been hours and its still working fine.

i've run 3dmark twice and played some GTA4.

also switched off the machine just now and turned it back on.

thanks again guys.. i just wish i knew what it was.. i'd prefer a dud card over a intermittent one...

You can use furmark to stress the GPU, its basically the graphics card equivalent of prime95 for your GPU.

No joy.

I ran Furmark and it artifact-ed. tried throttling back & rebooting using Rivatuner at a couple of speeds but it didnt improve (even all the way back to 435 core & 525 mem).

tried uninstalling and cleaning drivers and reinstalling but no good there either.

temp's in Furmark was 73c MAX...

looks like a i'll pack this up in the box and take it back tomorrow.

btw, Catalyst 9.4 didn't support my card i think so i dont think 9.2 will work.

thanks again guys.
