Upgrade time!

Recommended Posts

So... I'm planning to do myself an upgrade over the next few weeks, starting in a couple days... and I outlined this so far;

$269 - Antec P193

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_p...oducts_id=11050

$399 - Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5

http://www.scorptec.com.au/computer/30496-ga-ex58-ud5

$409 - Intel Core i7 920

http://www.scorptec.com.au/computer/30519-bx80601920

$239 - Corsair TR3X6G1600C8D RAM

http://www.scorptec.com.au/computer/30696-tr3x6g1600c8d

$239 - Corsair HX750 PSU

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_p...roducts_id=8850

I am only buying from these two sites, as I've bought many things from them before and they're very reliable, deliver on the next working day, and have good customer service.

------------

I'm going to be using the X-Fi and HD4870 IceQ4+ from my current PC for now until something new from ATi pops up (if it's a worthy improvement over the 4870).

Anyway... I'm posting this here to see if anyone has any suggestions on what else I should grab, or if they think I should make any changes.

Mostly out of curiosity, and so I can have a think about it before I make any purchases.

That's a nice build. I love the p193, if I could afford it, I'd be using one in my upcoming build (http://forums.atomicmpc.com.au/index.php?showtopic=19243). Nice mobo: looks sick has all the features.

6gb of 1600mhz ram is awesome. I'm starting out with 3gb of 1333 only cause I'm forking out on a $3-400 GPU. Eventually I'll upgrade to 6gb 1600 or 2000mhz.... eventually

Not sure if you'd need a 750w psu, you could probably get away with a 650w, unless you're planning on using dual gpu's anytime soon.

Good luck with your build and let us know how you go with it. I'll be getting mine underway within the next couple of weeks, or whenever I get my tax refund!

Fully loaded thats going to be one heavy case to pick up also that side thing on it is weird.

could save a few dollars on the ram by going with these

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_p...roducts_id=8716

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_p...roducts_id=8497

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_p...roducts_id=8648

or

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_p...oducts_id=11884 same price better latency

if you buy the CPU from PCCG they allow you to specify you want a D0 stepping which runs cooler and overclocks better.

swap the cooler to a Noctua U12P with 1366 bracket or TRUE (plus whatever type of fan you want) and 1366 bracket.

Yeah, my current P192 is already very heavy.

But I don't go to LANs or move my PC much, so it's not too bad.

The 'side thing' houses a 200mm fan, and it sticks out about an inch so it doesn't interfere with any aftermarket CPU coolers.

A nice touch, I'd say.

Thanks for the RAM suggestions though, I'll have a look.

just make sure whatever you buy doesn't use elpida chips, they having been having a high failure rate lately.

I've only ever bought Corsair RAM for some reason... so as long as they don't use 'em, I should be fine. :P

Also, where would I choose the i7 920 stepping on PCCG? I added it to my cart and had no options to choose.

mayben mention them in the comments or email them with your order no# and mentione "SLEBJ" as the product code. everything should be a D0 stepping anyway if that is your concern. I guess nessie's already got an email saying that they guarantee a D0 stepping.

I decided to just grab the CPU from MSY in a couple weeks, since I'm close by to one most weekends.

I assume from the stock they go through, they'd most definitely only have D0 left by now.

I just ordered the case, RAM, CPU cooler (decided to go with the Zalman one anyway... I have a CNPS9700 NT at the moment and it's never been an issue), and motherboard, all from PCCG tonight.

The rest - in two weeks time (next pay).

I'm pretty pumped, I love building new PCs, shame I only get to do it once every 2 years. :P

Ha ha. Same for me. That's why I'm always looking for upgrades and helping my mates out if they want a new build/upgrade. But new builds are the best fun. That feeling of satisfaction just after you've set it all up and installed that game that ran like a piece of shit on your last system and set the graphics to max and it doesn't even break a sweat...

....Man I can't wait to get a new pc!

True that! Though sadly, in my case... that game is ARMA II. :( Haha.

Runs bad on nearly everything... until they fix the AI code to stop the epic CPU-rape.

Progress update with pics if anybody cares, woot!

Though the CPU cooler's bracket is a little wobbly, even though I've tightened the screws as much as I can... I'm hoping the pressure of the metal mounting bracket pulling outwards that gets screwed into the plastic one lifts it and stops it from wobbling.

Pics!

CPU cooler obviously isn't attached yet as I don't have the CPU yet.

Woo.

Haha. nice case.

You have got the zalman cpu-cooler?

Otherwise, I suggest you to go for true or noctua cooler, work better.

I get the rest of my parts in two weeks or so... roughly.

Getting paid monthly is a massive pain in the ass.

I have a P192 at the moment, and I noticed the inside walls of the P193 seem more insulated than the P192... so I'll see how it goes with noise.

And yeah, alex, I got the Zalman cooler... I didn't need something epic 'cause I don't intend to do any massive overclocking... only a little... maybe 3.5Ghz or so.

I'll see how I go.

Finally complete! (Though in the pics, ignore my lack of DVD drive SATA cable :P, I forgot all about it 'til after the pics)

And nesquick, I find this case is quieter than my P182. I like it, it's nice.

Thanks, it took me awhile, but I like neat computers. :)

Behind the mobo tray is a bit of a nightmare... but hey, you can't see it so it doesn't matter. :P

EDIT: CPU is sitting on 22C idle (according to the BIOS) with this Zalman cooler. :)

Tight.

That looks awesome. I'm still waiting on funds for my build, but seeing yours makes me want to go p192 instead of the haf922.

Done any benchies?

Nah no benches... I'm not really into the whole benchmarking thing, but my games run pretty much flawlessly @ 1920x1080... surprisingly even ARMA II! :D
