Games that work/don't work on Windows 7

Recommended Posts

Ok I just build an i5/ 5850 games rig for a mate running Windows 7 home premium 64bit.

So far I've loaded up 2 games for him: CoD 4 and V8 supercars 3.

Cod 4 would not work because it was missing some DX9c files. So I loaded up DX9c and now it works fine.

V8 3 on the other hand will not work at all. There is a conflict between Starforce and Win 7. Starforce version 5.7 and later will work and 5.5 and 5.6 partially supports Win 7, but earlier versions don't work. Unless Codemasters brings out a new patch with a starforce update or a patch that gets rid of starforce it's a no go.

So I thought it would be a good idea if we can share our experience of what works and what doesn't for the whole community.

If your mate does not play online then just use a no-cd patch this bypasses the starforce crap.

I played a fair few games on Win7, cant remember them all. But most of them worked pretty easily.

Sacred 2 worked, however you couldnt use Crossfire or it would fuck with the game, AND for some reason, the save files, which were in c:\users\username\etc. etc.etc. would randomly corrupt after launching and quitting the game, so I went back to Vista.

But from memory, Crysis and Crysis Warhead worked, Counter Strike Source Worked, although it had a problem where when joining a server it would randomly alt tab me. Half Life 2 Episode 2 worked a charm too, played through that for the first time on Win7.

Thats all I can remember for now...Oh

You need to install the starforce hack from starforce to disable it for Windows Vista, because it was never made compatible as far as I know, so Windows 7 is included.

Did starforce do anything that actually good for people who bought legit copies!?

Far out, talk about harming the honest user.

I wouldn't expect anything with DRM to work on any OS. :P

Every game I've tried so far works on Windows 7:

Oblivion

Half Life 1 & 2 + episodes

Braid

FEAR 1 & 2

Fallout 3

GRAW 2

Portal

I've yet to encounter a game that hasn't worked.

Except for maybe Final Fantasy VII PC, but it never worked properly to begin with.

I wouldn't want to play anything that has Starfarce on it anyway.

But since I will be getting a new PC soon, it's good to know. And yeah it does sound like MS got their shit together this time.

All the games listed have worked on Win7 64-bit and the majority have been cracked (Not pirated, just don't like having to use the discs every time I wish to play.)

Works:

Age of Wonders - Shadow Magic

Company of Heroes(and Expansions)

Gears of War

Unreal Tournament 3

Far Cry & Far Cry 2

Age of Empires 3 (All expansions)

GTA San Andreas

Any Source game (Though, I had to turn on Multicore Rendering for the ones that had the option, else they'd glitch up)

Halo & Halo 2

Red Orchestra(and expansions/mods)

Mass Effect

Oblivion

Prototype

Full Spectrum Warrior

GRAW & 2

Burnout Paradise

Does not:

None so far.

I cant get S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky to work no matter what I try. Windows 7 seems to think the DRM software with it is a unstable driver.

Also have problems with BF2 right now though most people have been able to get it to work fine. It cuases my Pc to freeze randomly when playing. This only occurs in BF2 I can play Hawx for ages on full settings and crysis warhead games. ( any game that will stress my machine)

Looks like I might have to do a clean install.

BF2 works

Edit. Single player works, Multiplayer drops to desktop. Though I ported it over from my Vista HDD so maybe I need to reinstall it.

That's odd. It works fine here.

I'm playing it now ;)

Runs fine on my Windows 7 however, during the installation harware analysis, it told me my Operating System was unsupported.

I only installed Win7 yesterday and the only game i have played so far is CoD4. It loads up fine, but I'm constantly being kicked out of games by Punkbuster because of "Losing Key packets". This never happened to me when playing on Vista.
