Why would someone leave their router open on the internet on port 80?

Recommended Posts

Ok

So i was doing some research today and i did a port scan of all the common ports in a range from my own ip address to the next 100 value. Anyhow i got 2 one hits one of which was someone who had port 80 open. Thinking he might have had a web server online i thought i would have a look at it. As it turned it it was his Belkin router which was open on the ineternet on the most common port: 80. He did have it password protected (and has logged my ip no doubt. DoS attack here we come hehe) i just don't understand why someone would leave their router open on the internet on a common port with a simple password protecting him from a bad guy.

Is their a legitimate reason for someone to do this?

Someone not understanding what the "administer this router from the WAN" check box means?

Yep perhaps thinking they need it on to administer from the LAN?

Or perhaps they are actually doing WAN administration of it?

Although some routers actually came with that option enabled by default for some weird reason.

Because they don't know any better?

Seriously, I'd be willing to bet that's the answer.
