Bad news for folks who want a HTC desire

Recommended Posts

I was going to wait it out, but the minute differences over a Nexus One for the added price premium were not worth it in my book and I ebayed a N1 instead.

That's a little more than I'd like to pay at the moment ...

Looked on eBAY, and current prices stated here look about right.

I'll just wait until June since my current phone still works.

If I didn't already have my HTC Touch HD (and am still paying off the handset), I'd get a Desire.

We have them at work, and I know what my cost is (i.e. staff cost).

I still want one.

The bug is known and a fix is on its way last I heard.

I've heard testimonies of people getting the HTC Desire from JB Hifi for sub $700.

I'm tempted to sell off my HTC Magic for this.

I'm running MoDaCo Custom ROM Desire Port (Desire Rom) on my nexus 1 and absolutely love it. but still love having the N1. Love having the options of all the different custom roms that are available.

http://android.modaco.com/ For anyones who's interested in rooting running custom roms. (desire included)

Are these phones good? yes they are

Are they worth getting? Depends if your an app junky or not. Not nearly asmany apps as iPhone but getting there. I turfed my iphone for this.

Battery life is about a 1.5days (thats not crunching apps left right and centre). general phone, alarm and sms, check weather and facebook maybe twice a day.

Depending on your apps you install/how you configure them up, you'll need a biggish data plan, above 250mb.

Can the phones be unlocked to any network? I heard rumours that Telstra were the only ones rolling a 4G network around here, or are these phones 3g friendly?

I thought they were locked to telstra

Depends who you buy it from, obviously the ones sold by Telstra will be like that.

my cousin and I bought (outright) ours at the same time (from Telstra), he popped his Virgin card in and worked no issue. In our experience they are unlocked.

Telstra have stopped "customising" phone firmware now? I hope so.

unfortunately not, the phones are unlocked but still full of Telstra crap. Called HTC and a stock firmware/rom wont be out untill the Tesltra exclusive rights thingy has expired.

There's no "obviously" about it, Telstra don't lock postpaid handsets (including those purchased outright).
