Building standards?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I live with my girlfriend and we live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building. Now, the only way to get to our unit is stairs. The building was half built and then they sold the apartments. No work was done on the building for like a year and now they have started on the other half. I was told that they would be building an elevator into the building. Yesterday my GF hurt her foot badly and can't walk and then I thought, isn't it illegal to make a building without wheelchair access or even an elevator before having people move in? Then I found out that when the elevator is going to be built it is only going to go as far as the 2nd floor, not the 3rd. So now i'm extremely pissed off because if myself or my GF sustain some sort of injury, we won't be able to leave the house.

Am I onto something or is it just tough bikkies?

Depends where you live.

I -think- in Victoria buildings of 3 floors or more require elevators.

Good luck making anything happen tho.

There are restrictions on public building codes, but nothing I'm aware of on private buildings.

(Why do I only notice spelling mistakes when I'm quoted?)

This was my understanding also.

and it may simply be enough to have one planned before moving people in.
