Preparing your desktop....reboot.

Recommended Posts

Windows 7 64bit.

After logging in windows states preparing your desktop, then reboots. In safe mode it reboots before logging on.

The behavior is consistent and reproducible. It isn't a hardware issue as I use Linux without issue.

The only change I made was to install a cumulative security update for IE8.

Ideas?

Sorry, dude - no idea. Win7 has been rock solid for me since day 1.

Same here, it's a really strange error!

I tried uninstalling the update, which made no difference. I booted with MSDaRT and used sfc and looked at event viewer, and nothing helped.

I'm really hoping to avoid having to reinstall.

google "windows 7 shutdown reboot loop"

http://www.webtlk.com/2009/07/02/how-to-st...-7-reboot-loop/

- When your computer starts its next reboot (black screen), just hit F8 on your keyboard a lot of times till you get the Advanced Boot Options screen.

- Now, with your arrow keys, select Disable automatic restart on system failure and press Enter.

- Well, done!

Sorry, my exploration of Win 7 (despite it's multiple hassles) did not include this), so nothing useful to suggest. Sorry.

No problems, thanks anyway. It seems to be a very rare issue, at least as I am experiencing it.

I just wish I could find an error message or some indication as to the cause.

I guess a reinstall is in order.

Drop a trouble ticket to the MS desk first. They might be able to help. (Don't hold your breath, though - idiots can't even find the driver for their own x6 keyboard uinder their own Win7 OS.)

The MS Desk was useless.

I told them I had system restore disabled and that safe mode and last known good configuration made no difference.

What do they do? Suggest I use system restore and see if safe mode works.

I have system restore disabled, so no.

Silly little vegemite.

Although if you can't get to safe mode, it probably wouldn't have been of much use anyway.

I'd be doing a repair install at this stage, that should let you keep all your settings.

It sounds like the reboot virus from years back

"Windows is shutting down your computer in 30 seconds". Could be set to 1 second running on startup.

Sounds like a nasty worm/virus thing I've had to remove from some machines indeed.

Downloading the bootable AVIRA rescue disc fixed that.
