What kind of speeds are you getting on a zpool scrub?

There's not a lot of data on the pool yet, does that matter? The few times I've run it so far it's completed almost instantly. I'll rerun tonight and post back for you.

 

FYI, the file I was using to test transfers in my last post was a 6GB~, so not heaps of small files either.

 

Could it be having one Seagate in with the Hitachi's is causing something funky to happen, e.g. different read/write/seek times? I could zpool offline the Seagate to test.

 

Edit: I'll try connecting the NAS and MBP directly with a crossover cable eliminating the switch. I don't think this is the cause, as iozone is showing poor performance.

Correct. Without much data on the pool - it'll be a moot point/pointless test.

Definitely and entirely. Mixing spindles can do some weird IO skew stuff. That said, ZFS is generally intelligent enough to abstract away from it. Remember, when writing to a ZFS based FS, you're not writing to "disk". You're writing to Layer 1 adaptive re associative cache, which in itself THEN writes to disk.

 

I'm thinking this is a sys config/controller issue at this stage. I'd

 

1. Try different ports.

2. Offline the odd drive.

3. Re-create the pool.

4. Try a dedicated controller card...

6. iostat -xnMz 1 (so we can see what the raw devices are actually tickling).

 

etc etc...

I effectively tried different ports when I swapped all the SATA cables over the other day, most disks ended up on different ports I believe.

 

I'm thinking the intermittent reads in the earlier zpool iostat output could be due to the way writes are cached before committed to disk, so may not necessarily indicate a problem?

 

I think I need to get a faster host to test SMB/AFP performance over Gigabit as well.

 

I'll work on getting my HBA updated to hopefully resolve that write performance issue.

 

Is running iozone with the options e.g. number of threads the best way to be testing peroformance?

 

 

Sorry about the long output, is there a better way for me to post/share these?

 

First test is with all disks online, second is with the Seagate offline. Fairly small differences between them.
