OK, so WTF is going on with Atomic?

Recommended Posts

That's the attitude thats not going to help.

he is making a valid statement. this is a tech site. the name is Atomic MPC Maximum powered computing.

The mag and website is all about tech. Why would we start adding cars and other non tech related things in?

We have the green room, which is used to discuss all non tech related things. It's a valid point squallstrife has made.

The sections themselves are as good as we'll get I reckon.

Everything else goes in general chat.

If people want to discuss cars, they can join a cars forum.

We're not SomethingAwful, we're not 4chan, we're a tech forum.

Ive never spoken about anything technical in my entire 7 year membership on these forums.

Sorry, but Im living proof that there is more to these forums than just tech. We need to embrace that, not limit our potential.

Well I admit it is quiet these days in the tech sections but it has happened before, it could be a number of things like people not being able to spend up on tech like they used to and being more focused on just building a machine that will do the job. As for less modding of boxes it may simply be that most boxes these days look great off the shelf, the days of the beige box are gone (Thank god).

Also people are keeping their tech longer these days as compared to the early days of computing, where quantum leaps where happening monthly, and everyone wanted the next best thing because it was so much faster. Now a computer has a much longer life (My son is still using his GT8800 and Intel core 2 quad 8xxx series and it still happily runs the games he plays like Bio shock 2, left for dead 2 ect). And generally computer parts have a better life span (reliability) than they once did.

I am sure some new people are scared away by the antics (which we old timers are all used to and no longer shocked by) in the green room, I mean imagine what some of those threads look like to a newbie ! Especially when members are going at each other hammer and tong.

Yeah, I think this is all very valid and I would tend to agree.

I would think many if not most people come to the Atomic forums for the Tech sections and then slowly get involved in the Green Room discussions if that's what they want to do.

However, tech has changed, prices are down for more than adequate hardware which means unless you really want to, you don't tend to need to OC or watercool or whatever. People still do it, but it seems much less necessary now than it did a few years ago to me, when people were pushing to get to the next level. People that OC now tend to be 2 groups in my experience, the people who like to break records and the people who want to buy a bit of a cheaper chip and get the best power for money ratio.

And 100% agree on case mods, aestetics of cases have changed by leaps and bounds since beige crates, many cases now come with clear sides and adding lights/fans/whatever isn't unusual anymore. It's almost the norm. What I consider a case mod now and what I thought of a case mod a few years ago has changed a lot because of that. The levels have simply changed and with it the community.

I mostly came to Atomic for the gaming sections, which I still frequent. I've been on Atomic for a good long while now, not sure how long... but for a few years I guess (edit: Apparently 5 years. Wow.). I'm not a prolific poster, and I doubt I ever will be simply because I'm not a social creature. But I make use of the Green Room, the Tech Sections, Trademart, Gaming, I dabble in everything. But I don't consider any one part more important than the other. I would think I'm not an uncommon poster type. There is a smallish but very vocal minority that make up the bulk of the posts in the Green Room which in turn makes up the bulk of the posts on the forums, not that I've done counting but it seems so on a casual glance, and while they are of course important to the community and in turn the forums, it takes all types of posters to make the community an actual community.

The loss of a long time member, especially a vocal one, always creates waves. But everything changes. And nothing is truly lost.

We even had a girl run 3rd place in the Fifa 2010 World Cup tipping comp!

Bingo!

If you want to get officious, and quote "forum rules", then the final arbiter is the "rule 0" of T&Cs. You know that.

The FAQs are a guide, for interacting with other members of the forum.

If you have a genuine concern about the issue, then you know what to do.

We aren't going to publicly debate the merits of the ban, nor reveal information you may or may not be privy to.

Should we?

TinBane, I've been on this forum longer than any other regular poster. I know more about this forum and its dynamics over time than almost any other person here.

I know the final arbiter of the rules is that magic thing called "context".

I also know that when you take all the furniture out of a home, it becomes just a house.

Yeah, but a house can become a home again with different furniture.

For the most part I'd certainly agree with you.

But what he was doing before he got banned was nothing short of trolling.

Rob.

You know, 1shot served us all a valuable lesson - knowing he was around, I made my arguments as tight as possible, with few, if any, generalisation. It's why I only clashed with him on occasion.

The people that had a problem with 1shot were the people who simply didn't know what they were talking about and 1shot developed a speciality in ripping them a new one. Instead of learning a lesson, they chose to complain.

Mate if I complained about the two or three people who shat me on here as persistently as some users here had it in for 1shot, the mods would resign from the workload of having to clear their inboxes every hour!

I also know that when you take all the furniture out of a home, it becomes just a house.

Yeah, but a house can become a home again with different furniture.

And that goes to the core of what twinny is saying - we've removed the furniture and there's nothing to replace it.

You didn't have the pleasure of talking to him in the few days before he was banned, did you?

He wasn't being a pedant. He was an all-out nuisance. I don't know, but I suspect that it might've been stuff going on IRL that made him so crabby, but either way it sounds like he was appropriately warned.

There is a big difference from being a pedant (which he didn't get banned for for many years), and the way he was carrying on.

Rob.

I'm not sure what exactly you are trying to say.

Maybe you could spell it out in english (simplified) for me, so I understand exactly how your metaphor relates to 1Shot's banning.

Property markets are sluggish in many areas. That doesn't meant there's anything fundamentally wrong with the market.

Just because you have had to get rid of the old furniture, and there currently isn't any furniture, doesn't mean there will never again be furniture.

And that's if you assume that the loss of a few pieces of furniture means that you've lost all your furniture. Which it doesn't. If I throw out my bed and couch, both things that I've had for years and are quite comfortable and loved even though sometimes there's a spring in my bed that pokes me in the thigh and my couch has a few stains from who knows what, it doesn't mean that a new couch and bed will not one day be just as comfortable and loved. I just have to break them in.

Lets say you've got a bunch of friends that you've had for 10 years. And suddenly one of these friends stops coming out, stops calling, stops making contact. Drops off the planet.

That friend is irreplaceable. Even if he was a crabby asshole for the few days before he disappeared.

I learned that lesson a year or two ago when my mate Ari found himself a bird and disappeared off the face of the planet after being best friends for 18 years.

Sure you can make a new friend (and this answers GFK's question) but it's not the same and never will be. Yes, change is good - but not at the expense of everything.

Something you need to understand Leo is that for every 1 of you who enjoyed his posting, there were 10 people who didn't. Also, if someone is asked not to do something and they continue to do it, there's only so many chances that someone gets. It doesn't matter if they were V1 Atomicans (such as yourself, 1shot, myself, many others ...) or Atomicans who joined the site a day ago.

Some of us (maybe just me?) dont have much to contribute; both in time and content. I came for the tech and games, after all that's what this forum seemed to be about. (I actually was given a subscription to the mag for a year and found the forum that way.) I dont have much to say on tech & games; usually more questions than anything else. I am also very busy irl, and dont have much time to look at the forums usually. So I hardly ever look at the Green Room, and post even less there. To be perfectly frank I really couldnt care less about most of your opinions on stuff in the Green Room. I talk about the kinds of things discussed there with my real life friends, if so inclined. Maybe I'm just old and cranky that way though. I came here (Atomic) for the tech & games, not your opinion on the state of democracy in the USofA.

I'm actually surprised I posted here O_o Lack of time n all.

Maybe we should have a Survivor style system whereby we just vote off users we don't like.

Would save the hassle of the mods banning people.

No, you're correct.

The Green Room is just that...it's like a pub.

Banter, pissing contests, drunkards...and inevitably arguments/fights....sometimes the odd poo on the toilet seat.

But it is usually contained within the green room. The tech sections are host to some extremely smart people and I along with everyone else is very appreciative of that.

I nominate twinair, because he is better looking than I and I'm having trouble getting lucky.

Also, I didn't enjoy his posting. Some of it was a pain in the butt.

I'll go back to the feature that was championed on this new board.

The 'ignore' feature.

Is it broken or something?

Do people prefer the RTM button to the Ignore button?

Sure looks like it.

So as not to talk about "the banning" too much.

I'd like to make a suggestion. And that is that the ignore feautre needs to be advertised more and its use encouraged by mods.

Banning should be an absolute last resort for heinous crimes which do not include being a pest. I mean posting porn, warez etc etc.

Kimmo loves the ignore button. He hasn't been banned (recently) nor has he rage quit...although I'm sure he's come close on many occasions, but atleast he's clever enough to block people out before he blows his stack.

If my daughter tells me that someone is giving her shit at school, I just tell her to ignore them and play with someone else.

Simple.

this post has nothing to do with any particular banning, just a general comment

The banning thing is part of the problem.

Posts and threads are deleted leaving no evidence and feeble excuses are sometimes posted in Feedback.

Sure, porn etc has to be removed but at least at joints like....<cough>......whirlpool, there is a marker left.

The warts and all approach is far better in the long run, that is why I always advocated not being able to edit posts......or maybe give a two minute window or somwthing.

As for this not discussing bannings or banned members, that's rubbish, as is the piss poor excuse that they can't defend themselves.
