Windows detected a hard disk problem

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I started getting this message earlier this evening regarding my non-OS hard drive and it is asking me to do a full system backup due to an imminent hard drive failure. It is a 500gig WD and is only a couple of months old. I only started recieving the message after I coppied about 15gig of shit to it ... making it about 60% used.

What I was wondering was if any of you have had this message before and how reliable the message is. Am I likely to have a hard disk failure on this drive or is this vista being overly cautious.

Cheers

mmh

I'm guessing it'd use SMART tools.

Can you get any more details out of the report? It might just be it thinks it's failing due to the number of hours the disk has been operating for (i.e. if your PC is on 24/7).

Backup your shit right now and then download the manufacturer's diagnostic tool for your make of drive and give that a whirl.

i'll grab a friends external later on tonight and do a backup of all of my movies and music. Anything else can be lost as far as I can be concerned!
