3.5" with USB power?

Recommended Posts

Is there such thing as a caddy that can run a 3.5" drive from USB power? I'm happy to use a Silencer\Green drive. I just hate powerpacks. and laptop drives cost money.

I think running drives at 7200 RPM is too much for 5V on the USB 2.0 standard to handle which is why the 2.5" USB drives are mostly 5400 RPM and don't require packs.

You're smart, do the maths.

Caviar Green supposedly uses 6W while reading/writing. Doesn't say how much it needs during spinup.

Some of that is 12V, so you'd need a transformer, which won't be 100% efficient.

It's be more effort than it's worth, and you'd end up using half a dozen USB ports for a single drive.

I knew it'd be hard; I was just wondering IF they existed (my old boss used to have one that drew power from the 2X PS2 ports as well as USB to power, but I cant find it).

I'll just spend the cash and get a laptop drive then I guess. Thanks :)
