Building a new rig (finally)

Recommended Posts

I spoke to him about that, hes not planning on getting a second GTX480 for atleast 6-12 months, so he doesn't need to worry about getting a psu that can handle SLI now.

Its a nice build anyway, probably could have gotten away with the HX650w tbh.

PSU seems like it'll handle SLI 480's. People seem to overestimate what their system draws. All the power usage figures you find in forums are with furmark + linpack running so they eclipse anything gaming will do anyway and even with furmark/linpack SLI 480's. Woulda probably gone with a HX-850 psu and called it a day given they're not much more.

Could have definitely gotten away with a HX-620 given he might have to upgrade his PSU anyway. Have a look at some itx build logs and you realise how much you can skimp on power supplies compared to what most people spend. There's a good few hundred watts capability in most psu's that people just don't use.
