Building i7 rig finally!

Recommended Posts

Updated main post with results, pics etc..

Watercooling loop complete with cpu+two gtx480's and two radiators, all new updates are towards the last page for pictures!

Latest stuff is at the end of the post, from throughout the thread. 4600mhz clock, etc.

Hi, every time I upgrade my PC I end up doing a slew of overclocking and whatever in some thread about it, no doubt this will happen, even more successfully if I don't forget everything I learned about overclocking an i7, despite never owning one.

I ordered 4 items so far, which are paid and hopefully here by monday.

Moving from

Q9650 3Ghz quad (9multi)

4Gb Crucial Ballistix tracer RED

ASUS p5Q Deluxe P45 mobo

To

Gigabyte UD3R rev2 X58, for the price, there's almost no board that reaches a higher BLCK. Even though I don't normally buy Gigabyte stuff, they seem to have outdone themselves from what I read.

i7 950 skt1366 cpu, mainly for the 23x multi incase things go pear shaped on this UD3R with BLCK. But for the price almost the same as a 930, can't go wrong.

6Gb G.Skill Trident 2000MHz with the fancy clip over fan, improved heatspreader design over the Ripjaws (same ram, difference speaders basically). Comes with Elpida BSSE chips, little brother to the Hypers which are being phased out. Still they are very nice and should have no issue running cas8@2000Mhz and hopefully on stock volts or a little over.

LGA1366 Hold Down Plate for my Apogee GTX CPU block =D Need one of those right? I have a tradition of not letting new CPUs see stock or even air cooling if I can help it.

I'm running my current HIS Radeon 4870X2 for now, until we see what the 6970 card brings us.

GTX580 doesn't really float my boat.

Now I wait :/

This is exciting, I haven't upgraded in like 2 years

EDIT:

Firstly the pictures!

Took some quick snaps, sorry I didn't fiddle with the camera for better pics

Had no idea how huge i7's are next to my Q9650 !

Just putting together (found out later, it doesn't like to boot in blue slots, RAM has to go in white :P)

Apogee XT installed

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Couple of little 3dmark comparisons with old gear

I just ran some 3dmark..

HT off for Vantage to better compare same GPU with diff CPU (4 cores)

Vantage with 4870x2+q9650@4050 was roughly 16.500, i7950@4370 no ht got near 18k

3dmark06 got huge jump

22,500 with Q9650

26,000 with i7 950, providing a decent jump in sm2/3 score and FPS ofcourse.

Goes to show that in many situations, 4Ghz isn't enough for multi-GPU (non nehalem especially)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some powernumbers measured by gigabyte's tool

Okay a few rough numbers so far.

'load' measured with hyperpi (multithreaded superpi) and cinebench10

NO HT

3830MHz 1.275vcore/1.38vQPI = 27w idle, ~74w load ~100w linpack

4370Mhz 1.375vcore/1.5vQPI = 33w idle ~100w load ~140w linpack.

HT on produced about 7-10w more at idle, and about 30% more load.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just took off the waterblock cos I wasn't happy with my temps.

I have never used the new screw/backplate thing they do now for the XT, also I was lazy and mounted it with the case standing up,

I had a hunch the mount wasn't so hot.

Turns out 1/2 the paste hadn't even touched the block :S I felt like a dumbass, so I sat the case on it's side, re-applied paste, put the block on, held it with pressure and screwed it on as tight as i could with my hands, and now my idle temps dropped about 10C and load dropped from around 60 to max 48.

This is testing just a modest OC, but it reflects alot still.

I wasn't aware you had to tighten the ringer out of these mechanisms, not like the old spring tops.

I'm happy now =D

ha running 32m quad pi now cores are 48/40/47/39 in realtemp^^ Just slightly above what Idle used to be ha.

I should do some more overclocking

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

new temp testing

Beginning more testing since the heat issue is sorted, using lowest vcore possible, then give it little jumps when I need

NOTE: All bios set overclocks, no windows utils used

1.275vcore set in bios. (1.264 actual, LLC enabled too)

all testing done on 1.475QPI for 2000mhz ram once I test on 200blckwith it.

HT off, as I don't need it.

Using Realtemp to record max temperatures

First run:

4140MHz 1.264v (1.275bios)

Loaded cinebench cores max 51/46/52/44

Loaded hyperpi (multithread superpi) 8m cores max 51/44/51/44

Loaded IntelBurnTest cores max 57/53/57/50 , power draw 102W (using gigabyte utility)

I'll do another 5 blck jump now, see if I don't need more vcore =]

Okay I needed to bump bios from 1.275 to 1.325 (1.312 cpuz) for 5 more blck (4255Mhz)

Testing:

4255Mhz 1.32v (1.325 bios)

Loaded cinebench core max 53/47/53/46

Loaded hyperpi (multithread superpi) 8m cores max 52/46/52/45

Loaded IntelBurnTest cores max 60/56/60/53

Testing:

4375MHz 1.37v (1.375 bios)

Loaded cinebench core max 54/49/54/46

Loaded hyperpi core max 53/48/54/46

Loaded IntelBurnTest cores max 64/59/63/55

Seems to need fair bit vcore for 4.5Ghz, but some need 1.4v for like 4.2, so mines pretty good. Bad thing is temps increase alot in linpack.

Testing:

4485MHz 1.424v (1.435 bios)

Loaded cinebench core max 58/54/59/52

Loaded hyperpi core max 58/54/58/51

Loaded IntelBurnTest 69/64/67/61

32x200=4600MHZ here we come!

Loaded

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Couple of pictures of results so far.

Oh and a pretty one, I need to submit to the other thread, I used too much vcore I think, as I neeed to boost QPI to boot once I realised :/

Posted Image

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay a reasonably cold night, the radiator is blowing cold air on me :S

check this out =D

Idle: - look at CPUZ for speed/vcore

Load: -

finding a quad core for cheap these days isnt easy...unless ebay, which i dont want to do (ive never used it before).

im running a c2d e6550 and its slow...so i want a quad for the pc im using now (soon to be passed onto my bro or used as a LAN rig/backup pc) (im doing 3d modelling/animation so i need a fair amout of CPU power)

that looks like some good stuff youve got, will be cool when you have built it..

Jdog I have a Q8400 on a G41 DDR3 board you can buy if you want.

thanks for offer nessie, but i would prefer it to be somewhat equal to a i7 950 (speed wise) to be able to use it as a backup PC for my 3d modelling/animation/rending stuff..

sorry to hijack thread but just wondering nessie how much you want for that board and chip ?

am building the wife a pc for farmville, she always wants mine.

should be a good build and your video card will be fine for a while yet.

waits for pics.

im using it as an excuse to build myself a file server/her farmville machine.

to her it will just be her machine although it will be in a huge case with 16x2tb drives.

i need that chip and board! im doing high end modelling/rending stuff and need a fast quad core! ill pm you..

At higher clockspeeds maybe, but i7 has Hyperthreading to help with that too.

yeah,i know it wont have hyper threadering but its still good for the purspose..

Make sure you take pics Morgoth, sounds mean. Should be able to get a pretty penny for your old quad core, maybe you could throw a party for your new rig.

And on another note, just how many computers is jdog building? Seems to be on every thread I read.

-hides-

no need to hide turk, you have a very good point there,i didnt know that,so thanks for the info.

thats one of the reasons im going with the i7 950 and maybe (a little later) add another 6gb of ram for 12GB....

i can see it will help me alot in the work im doing..

thanks!!

you can come out now...

Dman I just found out I was missing Hyper threader.

OH cos I r has it in my purse!

/ontopic.

PCCG said the RAM ETA was delayed, but is now shipped 2 days later, so I'm happy about that, should see the gear monday or tuesday.
