\lifts one foot and stomps it down on some green flag worshipers lifeless skull. Raises his crimson flag high, yells out a cry and charges headlong into the fray

:)

I've finished my PC build now with the addition of the video card block. So after some tuning I've found the highest stable clock speeds and given my system a whirl.

3DMARK11 - P10654 mark84 - i7 950@4.6GHz (w) - HD6990@1050/1270(w)

and cause I was curious about Bolter01's CPU makes no difference findings in 3DMark11:

P10379 mark84 - i7 950@4.2GHz (w) - HD6990@1050/1270(w)

~300 points difference with 300MHz difference. I'd say the fact that I can OC my BCLK vs Sandies and getting a result means Sandies are hitting a memory bus speed limit?

Unigine Heaven 2.5 - 1746 mark84 - i7 950@4.5GHz (w) - HD6990@1050/1270(w)

Metro 2033 - 48.33 mark84 - i7 950@4.5GHz (w) - HD6990@1050/1270(w)

For Bolter01, get THIS. Allows vcore up to 1.3v which my card handled ok. Only pushing to about 46C temps. Though sucked down an additional 100W at the power point :P

Oddly, leaving stock volts I can run her at 1GHz ok, but to get the extra 50MHz stable OC you have to go from ~1.175v to 1.3v. I did have it running at 1070MHz with furmark for about half a minute but it's not stable. Seems like there's not much head room with this over the "stock" OC voltage. 1GHz, 24/7 OC here I come :D

Bit sad about the lesser quality RAM chips on such a high end product, would've given supam a run for his money :)

Fantastic scores, i'm impressed :). Nice work on that small form factor system as well, nicely done!

The 6990 is a fantastic card it really is!

Wonder if overclocking your card is having diminishing returns with some games? I know when I overclocked my 5850s some games would run worse, because that metro score looks a bit low, as does your heaven score.

Quite possible nuke, but from the scores posted so far it only seems slower when compared to other nvidia results. I'm not far off supams Unigen score, and considering this card has quite a bit slower GDDR on it I'd say it's scaling as expected.

Or are you talking about AMD OCing in general has diminishing returns? If so I could agree with you. AMD cards run at higher speeds to get similar results, so OCing them the same amounts won't return the same boosts as nvidia cards, for sure.

Bolter01 - I posted this in my other thread, but just FYI here, turns out 1GHz at stock clocks on my card tuned out to be a little insufficient for 24/7 OC. After playing STO for 10 mins the PC locked up. After boosting vcore up to 1.19v it worked well for several hours without issue. Hope that helps.

smakme7757 - Thanks mate :)

What I meant was, once you pass a certain clock speed, you lose performance rather than gain it. Just speculation though, something similar happened to me with my 5850s, if I pushed them just that little bit too far, I'd see poorer results than a milder OC.

Guys,

I've had the Greatest afternoon of Overclocking!

Having GR8 game of BC2 last night and Eradicator [AKA] mark steams a message mid battle a quick look during respawn revealed he had got his water block and was trashing my scores. I paid no mind, was busy killing, but in the back of my mind...

P11337 Bolter01 - i7 2600K@5Ghz (w) - HD6990@1000/1500 (w)

P39301 Bolter01 - i7 2600K@5Ghz (w) - HD6990@1000/1500 (w)

Unigine Heaven 2.5 - 1866 Bolter01 i7 2600k@4.6Ghz(w) - HD6990@1000/1500(w)

Metro 2033 - 61.67 Bolter01 - i7 2600K@5Ghz (w) - HD6990@1000/1500 (w)

Sry bout the res of those shots, let me know if you cant read 'em

Your right Nuke, I had hit some funny walls before today with the CPU@5Ghz and faster GPU clocks fail well behind lesser or little improvement at all.

I was quite amazed at what 2x 480's can do, God help us if any crazy bastard gets 3!

or 2x 580's that my friend would be sick!

There is a guy @ AMD forums that has a 6990 with a 480 PhysX .....

I was thinking those TI550's look kinda lonely over @ PCCG

*JOKES*

Thx mark for TriXX seems to be much more stable than ASUS Smart Doctor or MSI AB. I really like it, just needs a few extras like keyboard LCD support, graph/history/min/max of temps

I had some great results and found a few things out on the way, I actually went at it very incrementally. Yes I found 1Gz needs 1.2 and that's bugger all voltage any way for a nice OC - A GHZ

M8 my memory just wouldn't stop, I stopped @ 880/1500, so I went chasing highest core and I may be limited to 1Ghz Metro wont take 25mhz more even with 1.3v

I am gamer at heart and I just wanna play. So I might just leave it at that and get some mileage out of the card before I get bored and start to experiment.

Nice one Bolter, I dunno how you're pulling 1500 on the memory but I like it.

Maybe contact with my memory chips isn't perfect or something. Oh well CBF taking it apart, just want to game game game :)

Ok, after seeing Bolters memory, I decided to have one last look at my memory speeds. First time around I was putting in about 1275MHz and it was locking up on me so I figured it had topped out. Decided to go for broke and just put in 1300MHz, and it worked! Kept going all the way up to 1545MHz stable. So dunno wtf was going on before.

So re-ran my tests. Unigen test didn't show any improvement at all so that must be GPU core intensive.

Even with a faster clocked card than Bolter I still can't catch him or supam, Sandies have too much speed in reserve.

/shakes fist in air

On the plus side, I've the fastest score with a i7-950 :P

There's even a guy with a 3 GPU setup that beats me by 1 point lol

Anyway, the other two benches I improved on a little:

3DMark11 - P10743 mark84 - i7 950@4.57Ghz (w) - HD6990@1050/1545 (w)

Metro 2033 - 50.33 mark84 - i7 950@4.57Ghz (w) - HD6990@1050/1545 (w)

GR8 stuff Mark,

its satisfying to work through it and improve your score. Excellent mem freqs!

Metro got .3 extra frames & Heaven got +2 points from 4.6 to 5Ghz SFA

I don't think thats the case, Dasa's scores are almost identical with mine and I'm just running 4ghz flat. (Cept for 3dm11, theres a bit of a gap there :P)

Although it does depend on the game, the synthetic benchmarks in this thread don't seem too phased by cpu speed, except Crysis, got him an extra 10fps over me o.O

i wouldnt be surprised if the extra v it takes to get that 6990 past 1ghz is making the power reg cut in to protect itself lowering the cards performance even with +20% enabled

Mmm, good point. I did have +20% enabled too. Maybe I'll try some tests tonight with just 1GHz gpu @ 1.19v to see what happens.

Thinking about it Dasa, I think I worked out in some other thread that upping vcore actually increases the TDP limit too due to how the calculation it made so upping vcore shouldn't matter in this case.

Ran a quick test and it seems the case. Ran furmark at 1000/1500@1.2v and scored 49fps with the settings I was using. Then ran again at 1045/1545@1.3v and scored 50fps. PC power draw at peak went from 580W to 680W. So it would appear as though from 1.2v to 1.3v (with +20% power enabled in CCC) I'm not hitting the TDP wall. So I think the results I've posted are the best I can do with this CPU.

AFAIK using the unlock Bios #1 @880/1250/1.75 eliminates any throttling

Which backs up my theory that upping vcore also ups the TDP limit.

Strangely, OCing the memory on the card past the CCC 1500MHz limit made the memory slider disappear completely from CCC. Even after bringing it back below 1500MHz and restarting, the memory slider in CCC is still missing :S

seems my metro and crysis scores have dropped possibly due to some tweaks i did for sp affecting the benchmarks may have to reinstall them

Those are mad GPU clocks!

I'll fix this up tonight, I'm just headed out to work, and I've now ordered the DDCXres top so I can finish my "refresh" to my WC system and then I'll start competing again

Was rather frustrated my Crossfired 6950/6950's deciding not to play ball with Afterburner anymore (BSOD's abound) so decided I should give our triple GPU section a startup run :D

Unigene Heaven 2.5 - Triple GPU (ATI)

2415 Philo-Sofa - i7 860 @ 4.2GHz HT (a) - CrossfireX (Trifire) HD 6990 @950/1450 MHz (a) HD 6950 (shader unlocked) @845/1325 MHz (a) - Screenshot

Will do more once I've played around with Smartdoctor and pushed up the 6990's clocks. Considering the 6990 is getting x8 (so x4 per card!) it seems to go pretty well.
