[PC] Atomic World of Tanks Thread

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the games!

Had fun, and we did pretty well!

That heavy kill we got was a thing of beauty!

Be even better when you get proper voice comms up that aren't going to kill your bandwidth!

There is platoon chat using "q" push to talk in game. Also should set up a channel for AMPC and stay connected so whever you load can see who is on and chat away.

There's already an AMPC channel setup automatically :)

We weren't chatting last night, though, 'cause of Tinny's terrible connection.

Skype is a good option too. Though you can be tracked by people you don't want knowing you are online that way.

I've used Skype for DDO. Not having to push to talk was convenient, but I wanted to punch my mate for eating chips, burping, and just generally being disgusting, so I dropped out of it a lot and reverted to typing.

Now get onto that server Nob

I should take a pic, show that I'm actually gonna make this darn server :P

EDIT: Man I wish I recorded that last kill

I could've farted at that Panzerjager, and it would've died :P

Yeah. Some of them might be one day, Churchill being an example (when the British tree is released)

What user name are you running under wontal?

That has it's own benefits.

It means you can unlock every standard tank, without premiums, it means it limits your ability to "buy into" the standard tanks in higher tiers without playing through the lower tiers, and it means you can farm XP on your gold-bought tanks straight away.

Agreed

Churchill + T2 Light + Matilda = loads of free XP (once converted) and credits for me, in the beta

Helped me go from struggling with a KV, to somehow getting an IS, Tiger, SU-152... and all vehicle trees completely up to tier 5

It helps a lot

Plus, they are cheap to repair (generally), and have less expensive ammo

Some of to gold tanks are fun (can't beleive I still haven't gotten myself a Ram-II) but for most people they aren't worth it. If a person is into progression then after they've bought the gold tank they'll need more gold to transfer the XP earned on it.

For some people that's no worries. For others it may be a concern.

I have 4 tanks that fit this category (not actually bought them with gold, but they are effectively gold tanks).

Valentine - engine is weak, so hills are a struggle. Gun has a decent enough punch, but low penetration. Great armor. Always feel like the little guy in this thing.

Pz-V/IV - pretty generic all purpose steel can. Interestingly, I have a mod that gives my Pz-IV a camo paint job, so the Pz-V/IV is standard grey with the camo turret from the Pz-IV.

M4A2E4 - good armor and decent speed. Built for toe to toe battles that I lose 70% of, but that's just because I suck at Shermans.

M6A2E1 - It's not a tank. It's a mobile bunker. Huge amount of armour. Huge gun. Huge shells, shell that are so huge it takes 2 crew members 23 seconds to reload, so you spend a lot of time hiding while you reload.

Have previously used these 2 as well

Ram-II - Good armor, decent speed and 2 second reload time. This is one of the most fun tanks I've used.

T-14 - Sloped front armor. Slowness and a pretty average radio let it down. Solid battle tank specialising in defence against scouts, though the slow turret turn makes even this role hard to succeed in. It is not expected to hold it's own against same tier or heavier vehicles. If there are no little tanks to shoot at then it's best use is as a shield for arty to hide behind.

Something about the Shermans and me. We just don't get along. I can't fight in them and I can't fight against them. The T-14 is basically an M4 Sherman with more armor. Perhaps that is why I have such little respect for it....

The two premium tanks I use, are the Churchill and the Matilda.

The churchill III, is underpowered for a Tier 5 tank, in terms of firepower. However, it has possibly the best Tier 5 armour ( I dunno) a slew of HP, and a relatively fast rotating turret for a heavy. It reloads extremely quickly, and is highly accurate. It's speed is very very slow though.

It has no HE rounds available (common for british tanks at the time), so it struggles from range. It works well when it's not totally out-tiered, to push up after scouts, and expose enemys by forcing them to fire on it, so your arty can open up. The gun is accurate enough that you can track tanks heavier than yourself, and in some cases defeat them by tracking and out-maneuvering.

All in all, it's a fun tank in most games, however if the game is against you, and the enemy has heavies left, it's frustrating to not be able to close. Get tracked, stuck at a range where your AP shells bounce, it's no fun. At the same time, I've taken 5 medium and light tanks on at once, and destroyed them all, winning the game as the last tank standing. They simply couldn't penetrate the armour, and their HE did little enough damage.

The churchill, I believe, has few weakpoints that HE rounds can capitalise on, and is so big and sturdy, that it can absorb the "heat damage" HE rounds do (see battle mechanics in the wiki).

The matilda mounts a similar cannon, as the churchill, which means it's pretty amazing vs lights and medium tanks. It's a medium tank, with 75mm frontal armour, and the speed of a heavy. With the "remove governor" "consumable", it can make it up hills okay. Small enough to hide, strong enough to take a hiding, and as above, fast reload coupled with decent damage. Unlike the churchill, it's usable at range, with HE rounds. I think the tradeoff is that it's AP shot penetrates less, but for a medium tank, the HE is really useful.

Opy: I'm waiting for the brits. Gonna try and rush into cromwell and sherman firefly as soon as they launch :P~ The Firefly will be used (I'm guessing) more as a TD than a medium tank.

I have much love of the name 'Firefly'

I have much enmity with all things 'Sherman'

That is a very confusing vehicle for me!

The sherman makes a lot of sense as a TD.

Shermans were great medium tanks. They shouldn't have been thrown up against germany heavies.

Their protection wasn't great, their guns were passable only, and their petrol engines caught on fire pretty easily.

Their benefits were gyrostabilizer aiming that actually worked, and meant that the tank could fire FAR more effectively on the move than many others, at it's introduction.

When they were introduced, the Shermans were great, and much better than Panzer IVs.

But they didn't advance at the same pace as some other tanks, so later in the war, they were pretty inferior.

The firefly, is a British 17pdr anti-tank gun, on a sherman tank.

It was so effective, there were standing orders for the germans to target sherman fireflies, over other tanks. Much like a tank destroyer :P

It's gun could regularly, and at range, defeat tiger and panther tank armour.

As a result, they did things like this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sherman_...08_15-05-43.JPG

To try and make the fireflies less obvious.

The firefly was fantastic as a defensive tank.

There are numerous tales of German tank actions aborting because of the actions of a lone firefly.

They used to chalk up weird stats, like knocking out 5 panthers, with 5 shots from over 800M away.

Of course, they couldn't exactly take punishment in return. :)

I think of the firefly as the most effective English tank destroyer, rather than as an English tank at all.

EDIT: The problem with the sherman, was that it was never designed as a tank to take on armour. It was always envisaged that they would be used for breakthrough exploitation, and that tank destroyers like the hellcat or wolverine would be used to engage armour. So it's initial aptitude against tanks, was more of an inadvertent benefit, than a design. So they were a great maneuvering tank, which makes them hard to use right in WOT.

I too can't wait for the British

Plus, the Australian Sentinel tank is rumoured to be included

Don't know which variant though (one had a 17pdr)

On other sites, when nobody813 is not available, I tend to use variants on cruisercomet

SO you can see I'm looking forward to the British Cruisers

The Infantry tanks we've used, but not as the British had them (especially with the Matilda)

Bring on the brits

Yeah :)

Things I want to see (aside from driving a Black Prince!):

Churchill Mk VII

Crusader line

Cromwell (hell yes)

and the postwar tanks :)

Oh, and the achilles (M10 Wolverine, with a 17pdr strapped on) :)

In terms of the brits, a lot of their tanks didn't have HE as an option, when they had tank destroyer roles.

Then again, often they didn't need HE, as their AP rounds were pretty devastating.

For light tanks, I can't wait to see how annoying the tetarch is, and I hope they allow the option of the little-john adapted gun (MUCH better AP at the cost of no HE option).
