Somewhere, someone is writing up a thesis on what kind of a person you are depending on which option you took in the Dark Brotherhood "entrance exam..."

FTR I did contemplate attacking Astrid before settling on killing every last one of the hostages. After all, whats a two more deaths after I've murdered someone, ate someone else and lead an entire rebellion?

Though I did have the Tactics Ogre "There is blood on my hands, how long before it covers my heart?" sitting on my shoulder like a little angel the entire time. I guess I stabbed that to death in the abandoned shack too...

ok... after hanging round Ulfric for a while and in Solitude for a while, I decided Ulfric was a self-serving prat and joined the Empire. Now I discovered almost every entry in the wiki is written from the perspective of someone who has joined the Rebellion. All this has been done trying to still get my hands on the house in Windfeld.

but my experiences with Skyrim and Steam (not least the recent patch to make it unplayable without Steam loaded; painful when I want to play on the train using wireless broadband, unless I have time to start before my train arrives, ie sitting in one place with reliable reception) are making me really hate it, and I'm more or less certain to never buy another game running off Steam (however if I want the game on PC, I'll probably get via torrent with Steam cracks, a practice which such draconian DRM seems ironically enough to encourage, as per Ashton's very-justified rant - the DRM does nothing to stop pirates, and just pisses off legitimate buyers).

can't you just run steam in offline mode and play that way?

You can, but there are no Achievements when doing it that way, and I'm a bit of an achievement whore, especially considering I've never really used Steam before as I've mentioned, so kinda want to get some.

Also I had some trouble getting it working when I got so frustrated with it not communicating over the net, and was happy to launch in offline mode for just that session, where I'd tell it to restart in offline mode, but then it kept reporting that it couldn't contact the server (does it need to, to go offline?), so it just kept going in a loop of saying it couldn't contact the server, prompting me to restart in offline mode, then telling me it couldn't contact the server!

Anyway back at work this week (was on a course last week, with longer train trips, long enough to bother playing during them), so will be in one spot when I play during lunch :-)

found an amusing glitch last night when starting a new character

after escaping into the keep in helgen (very very beginning of the game) I followed the imperial into the keep instead of the stormcloaks.

once inside, you can bash away at the imperial guy until you've had your fill/gotten enough skill ups to be satisfied. I was able to get most of my offensive skills to about 30 before leaving, except archery. I ran out of arrows :P

He will never attack you back, complain, react or penalise you in any way. Don't try it once you leave the intro dungeon though, because he fights back then, and gets back up even if you kill him.

Well, Skyrim has managed to carve out 93 hours of my life over the last three weeks (!). Just finished the Dragonborn questline tonight, and have also done the Theives Guild, Dark Brotherhood and Mages College quests along with a bunch of world exploring and random quests. Reckon I've had my fill for now - not keen on doing either the Stormcloak or Imperial quest lines - so my Level 50 wood elf is going to hang up his Nightingale bow and dragonscale armour, and settle into a comfortable retirement with Lydia in their Whiterun cottage. It's been a blast =)

no troubles playing it on the 360 :S

love how beautiful it looks, they really made magic use much much more fun in this iteration, my character is somewhere between a battlemage/archer/light armor specialist/one handed sword user and I don't have much trouble fighting most enemies.

Take the difficulty off Adept, it ruins the game.

I agree with that too. Having played on Master and switched back to novice it is like Oblivion with the level scaling. Its Boring as hell everything is so easy.

With the Steam problem it seems a issue on Steam side and they are fixing it ,post is on Beth Forums. I wish we can turn steam off altogether i have already activated my game so it should not be required.

So setup my brothers new PC last night and he fired up Skyrim and he's going "I can see birds" "what there is clouds!?!?" etc etc.

He had been playing it on his laptop. Feel sorry for him now that I know how he's been having to play the game.

Interesting note, he was getting better frame rate in 3rd person than first person. (on his laptop that is)

So now his game looks better than mine :( He can run it on Ultra High settings now.

Seriously, how many fucking times do I need to tell Steam it's never, ever, ever allowed to update a Bethseda game?

after writing that I must have done something wrong leveling wise because everyone started to become super hard like that mission for the thieves guild where you go hunting that elf with that mercer guy, he would go down really quickly then I'd be swarmed by drauger with like 3 times more health than me, I went through probably 25 health potions and went up like 5-6 regeneration levels on that one mission alone :/

probably doesn't help I only use light armor though...

Dont you find it funny that if your turn it off for any other game; it stays off, but with Bethesda you get updates forced onto you whether you like it or not.... /rage

I noticed that too! I turned it off after the bad 1.2 reports started coming out, only to have it start updating a few seconds later; I'd thought maybe I wasn't fast enough.

I had no problems with 1.2, but had left updating turned off, only to find it updating yesterday, and the setting had reverted to 'keep updated'. Wha?

Yeah, it's very convenient how only Skyrim keeps updating and there was a steam patch to 'fix the auto updating' later that day.

Light armour is fine, it's very easy to hit the armour cap and you can do it even in fur armour. Just go buy a +50% smithing potion and go upgrade all your gear. Make sure you're wearing a helm too and not a circlet, there's hidden armour for having on a helm, chest, gloves and boots.

Long time listener, first time caller....in a while :) How's everyone been?

So I bought Skyrim this week and getting into it. Made a pretty default Nord 1H specialist battlemage. As many people have mentioned I've already got several other characters lined up in my head :P The action can be a little slow-paced at times but I guess that's what makes the game so epic, you can spend hours crafting or exploring cities, but when you need to rock out and carve up some fodder it's available. The graphics to me are impressive without being spectacular (playing on a 360) but again, the storyline and sandbox aspect of the game need to be taken into account.

I'm just playing through my first few quests with the Companions, currently Level 11. I've spent some time getting Smithing up and looking at improving Enchanting also. I've got my favourites sorted right now but sometimes have trouble bringing the right ones up. Option 1 is Flame/Axe and Option 2 is Heal/Axe but sometimes when I select Option 2 it's Heal/Heal and I have to go back and remap them again. A little frustrating.

My favourite moment so far was kiting a Giant around a rock while burning him to cinders, only to loot his corpse and with my puffed up chest go challenge a mammoth he was leading somewhere, that'd didn't end well. I did get a nice view of Winterun when I was tossed 50ft in the air :P

One question for the experts, how does the whole Soul tap thing work? I have a 1H axe which sometimes steals a soul from the deceased (only when I have an empty vessel right and below the right level correct?). Are these filled vessels used for Enchanting? ( I haven't started that yet) And if I 'charge' my Axe is that allowing me to capture more souls until it runs out again?

You can use soul gems to recharge magic weapons, not sure if they have any other uses.

Soul Gems are used for enchanting.

You must kill your target before the soul trap effect wears off.

The soul will go into the appropriate soul gem. Bigger souls need bigger gems. (or something like that)

whats the cap for it? I got that nightingale armor upgraded to exquisite and the perk that lets you get a bonus for wearing a matched set buts its at like 330 protection which seems pretty high to me?

its not really a problem now, unless im getting swamped by enemies who have more health than me which usually I just bail anyway and hit them with ranged magic attacks.

Enchanting can certainly give you a huge edge!

I destroyed iron gloves of smithing to gain the skill, - then cast this on gloves, ring and necklace using black soul gems to get maximum gains.

Next I wore all this gear and made Deadric armor, and smithed it up to legendary status. Total protection plus shield is about 950!!!!!

Then you add destruction, sneak, fortify resitance etc (dual cast to legendary weapons and gear).

So basically this level 78 guy is now almost ironman. Each sword does 170 damage before one handed bonuses, plus fire. Armor enchantments mean I catch everyone by surprise when sneaking, and the cost to dual fireball is now about 20 points, ice spike is about 4 points, chain lightning is almost free.

So is the game boring now? Hell no - Deadric enemies can still be a challenge, so is an open battle versus too many mages. An Ancient dragon + a bear catching me unawares was a tad close the other day. Now it falls down to making strong moral choices and trying to fulfill many barely started quests.

This game keeps on giving!

bears to me are easy to kill (just backpedal casting dual fireball to stun them), dragons tend to get me at the worst possible time though.

bears etc have become easy since my bow causes them to stagger now, so I just back peddle and hit them with 111 damage per arrow ^__^

How do you clean a house up? I was in my Solitude house and using the target dummies to practice my magic on and when i went back upstairs it was like a hurricane hit upstairs. I have a companion and a housecarl they so lazy they will not cleanup while i am raiding dungeons.
