A New Season of Arrested Development?!

The creator of Arrested Development not only still has plans for a movie, he also intends to bring the Bluths back to TV first.

US, October 3, 2011

Since the show ended in 2006, fans of Arrested Development -- the TV series IGN recently named the funniest ever -- have been hoping to see the much talked about film version of the beloved series come to fruition. Today, at a big Arrested Development reunion featuring the entire cast, along with series creator Mitch Hurwitz, there was a very surprising new bit of information: New Arrested Development TV episodes are part of the plan as well.

The discussion took place at The New Yorker Festival, and based off Huwitz's comments on stage, the official New Yorker Twitter feed, wrote, "Arrested Development coming back for one more TV season before movie." New York Times reporter Dave Itzkoff was also in attendance at the Q&A and tweeted, "Mitch Hurwitz says he plans limited Arrested Development series (9-10 eps, 1 character per ep) that would lead into movie."

Itzkoff's elaboration answers the question of how they would deal with the limited availability of certain cast members – Will Arnett, for instance, is starring in the new NBC sitcom Up All Night and wouldn't have the time to do a full season of Arrested Development. But he probably could take the time to star in a single episode catching up with Gob Bluth.

All of this is enough to get any AD fan salivating of course, but it's hard not to be wary… We've heard about the movie for years without it ever happening, and the fact is, Arrested Development, beloved though it may be, was not a hit TV show. So it remains to be seen if Hurwitz could get the backing to get a TV miniseries made, on top of a film we still hope truly comes to be.

But we have to keep hope alive… and not forget there's always money in the banana stand.

Update: TMI or not, Will Arnett has also now tweeted, "I'm peeing with @batemanjason at the moment..and we can confirm that we are going to make new AD eps and a movie."

We've seen the movie yo-yo between go and woe for the last 5-6 years.

Here's hoping something new "Arrested Development" FINALLY gets off the ground.

wait what? That's bs, GOB is one of the funniest characters! You can't have 10 episodes of AD with GOB missing from 9! The show needs all the characters together to work, just look at what happened to Running Wilde.

Kinda tastes like sad...

If it gets picked up, I doubt it would be in the fall schedule unless it goes to basic cable. I think Arnett could fit in 9-10 episodes in the Summer schedule. As long as Up All Night or Parks and Rec doesn't get moved to off-season -- and Community will get moved before either of those shows.

Hmmm, maybe I'm thinking of the wrong show, but I recall watching a couple of episodes a couple of years back and wondering where the comedy was. I'm serious too. This isn't a troll...

It deserved a longer run as it was a truly brilliant comedy.

It would be hard to see it done again poorly though, so they need to consider that too.
