X-fi gamer vs onboard sound ga-z68xp-ud3

Recommended Posts

Should I bother to put in my X-fi card into my new build?

I've got i5 2500k on a gigabyte ga-z68xp-ud3.

Thoughts?

Always use a dedicated sound card over onboard if you have the option.

I know that this general advice was accurate a few years ago, now I'm not so sure.

Games don't seem to be using EAX etc. CPUs are fast enough to do the workload (i5 2500k). Also the S/N rating is a few db better.

What am I missing?

Realtek just don't make good DACs. So you'll probably find that the sound lacks instrument separation and overall clarity, among other things.

Try them both and decide for yourself.

Thanks champ, I will try it. I forgot about the quality of the DACs, they ain't Burr Browns :)
