A Chris Roberts Production - Thanks Mr Mansill

Recommended Posts

Wasn't sure where to put this, but this seemed the most appropriate.

Thanks to Ben Mansill for his ode to Chris Roberts. I have similar remembrances and feelings with regard to the Wing Commander games (still some of the best Space Combat games ever) and the levels they attained.

My recollection was that Strike Commander (another awesome game - yet to be beaten as an Earth-based flight combat/story game - and one that I would love to play again) came out after WC2 rather than WC, but I could be wrong.

Origin Systems made some brilliant games, damn shame that they're not around anymore.

I also thoroughly enjoyed that article.

The Wing Commander games were amazing, a good 10-15 years before their time. Nowadays a lot of games have even higher budgest and production values but arguably the gameplay suffers. Chris Roberts made movie-like games that had some real depth to them and really made you feel like you were sitting in the pilot's seat.

Here's a gratuitous photo of my 386DX40 with MT32 playing the original Wing Commander

Does anybody else hate asteroid fields as much as I do? lol

BTW if you never played WC1 or WC2 with an MT32 (instead of just sound blaster) you are really missing out...

Wing Commander was waaaaay ahead of its time... awesome stuff.

Remember the full blown training simulator you sat in on the main battleship? The sexual tension with one of your wing'men' (who was actually voiced by the RL porn star Ginger Lyn)?

The only jarring thing for me was that the aliens were basically lions, which seemed a bit of a slack creative choice.

But hey, great storyline, great space combat, and even character development of sorts. It took gaming to a new level.

I remember these games. We used to play them in school. I still remember a lot about them, in particular the ship at the start and the briefing room or whatever. Had a real Battlestar Galactica feel to it, now that I think of it.

I do remember the aliens being lions, that seemed an odd choice. You could press a button to taunt them, and they could taunt you, that was pretty sweet. Would love to play them again.

Cheers guys (Mansill here). I toyed briefly with doing it all on Wing Commander, but there's just so much that could be said it'd need a multi-page feature, so went for the squeeze overview and tried to give an idea of the other stuff he did too, because the man is a legend.

So. This:

I was NOT expecting it, was NOT expecting the total raw brutality of it, and I was left jaw literally agape, speechless for minutes:

In that moment the validity of FMV was realised, and Mr Roberts showed he could do the hard stuff. I was really sad as I flew the following couple of missions!

Mr Roberts was also the very first big dev I ever interviewed, back in my spawning game journo days, at Hyper back in 1995. I was as nervous as heck because I was so in awe of the guy and his games, but bumbled through it :}
