UFC 141: Hulk vs Abomination

Recommended Posts

Late roll call on this one, the Facebook prelims start in about an hour.

Prelims on Facebook (8:15AM WA)

Manny Gamburyan vs. Diego Nunes

Luis Ramos vs. Matt Riddle

Efrain Escudero vs. Jacob Volkmann

Dong Hyun Kim vs. Sean Pierson

Prelims on ?

Danny Castillo vs. Anthony Njokuani

Junior Assuncao vs. Ross Pearson

Pay-per-View (Midday WA)

Jim Hettes vs. Nam Phan

Alexander Gustafsson vs. Vladimir Matyushenko

Jon Fitch vs. Johny Hendricks

Donald Cerrone vs. Nate Diaz

Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem

This is a fantastic mid-high level card. Even the Prelims are stacked with talent.

Short predictions:

- Ailstair reems Lesnar. Light circling at first them bam, right in his squinting eye. Lesnar drops out of favour as a serious contender having shown three times in a row that he doesn't know what to do when someone starts hitting him.

- Cerrone defeats Diaz by an astounding margin. I'm a little conflicted on this one - Nate has actually appeared quite a bit better in the last year. He's always had the skill set but in the past he hasn't necessarily applied it well. But recently he's shown he can. But Cerrone is a wrecking ball at the moment. He's torn through opponents like a Space Marine with a chainsaw gun. I think he comes out and does the same, completing 6 wins in 55 weeks.

- Fitch attaches himself to Hendricks' legs and grinds, just like my girlfriend did to me in grade 9 and for the same reasons - they just didn't know what the hell else to do. Easy decision win. I like Hendricks but he's not Fitch level.

- Gustafssson (24, Sweden) should beat Matyushenko (41, Belaruse). But Matyushenko is both hard to put down and a constant threat. Either Gustafssssson will wrap it up quickly, or Matyushenko will wrap it up quickly. I've swung back and forth on this one and ended up on the side of the 41 year old Russian. The only guy to really beat him was Jon Jones, and Jon Jones beats everyone. The Swede is faster and his technique is cleaner, but Matyushenko is a pro and a bad mother fucker. I'll go with Matyushenko.

- Nam Phan is a both technically very good and much tougher than people give him credit for (he can take shots and keep coming and not be stupid about it). Plus he takes long showers. He's great at mixing up his striking with low and high kicks, body shots and combos, all that jazz. Unfortunately he's not incredibly fast nor incredibly strong, which means he isn't that likely to KO or TKO people (he can and has done it, but against higher level guys it's unlikely). I haven't seen much of Hettes. He beat Bruce Leeroy, but that was the old Bruce Leeroy. The new Bruce Leeroy as seen at UFC on FOX 1 is a whole different animal. He hasn't faced any high level competition, but he has been dominant against low level competition. Submissions are his game but he sets them up with stand up... I just can't see him endangering Phan with either though. Phan by brutal body shots... I'm going with a first round stoppage due to strikes.

- Assuncao v Pearson is a great fight. Gotta go with Pearson, even though he hasn't looked his best lately. I think he's going to be looking for the KO.

- Another great fight. Evenly matched. I'll go with Castillo 'cause he's got more killer instinct.

- Stun Gun over Pierson. Reverse triangle :P But another great match up.

- Volkmann over Escuadaro but again, a great fight. Decision.

- Ramos over Riddle. Riddle is decent but not too dangerous. Unless he's got a whole new game, Ramos will take him.

- Going with Gamburyan. Another great match up. Could easily go either way. I think it'll go the distance though.

Reem to fucking SMASH Lesnar. Preferably by Brock shooting for a takedown and Reem caving his face with a perfectly timed knee, proving to Tak and the world that strikers are far superior to those kissyboy grapplers :P

Facebook fights are on.

Great fight between Gamburyan & Nunes so far.

*EDIT* I got it Nunes winning 29-28.

Bugger. Both fights have been great so far.

*EDIT* The Volkmann/Escuadaro fight got a little dull, but the finish was exciting as hell.

*EDIT2* "Not the best joke teller" - Rogan rescues a post fight joke by insulting it.

Stun Gun and Pierson are putting on a show too.

*EDIT* Holy shit. This might end up FOTN.

*EDIT2* Unfortunately both guys were too worn down in the third to make it FOTN IMO. But a great battle. Good 30-27 for Stun Gun.

Post fight interview lol - he kind of understands English so he emphasises the translation of the low kick-chin kick as it's happening, entertaining stuff!

Lots of Korean speaking at the end and the translator just laughed when Rogan didn't bother getting the translation to it :)

Are the supposedly televised Prelims on at the casino?

No free to air nor pay TV channel seems to air them any more.

*EDIT* Oh shit, my UFC.TV sub includes the televised prelims! Woooooo!

These fights just keep getting better. Smart & skilled. Also, Quadview in UFC.TV is awesome.

I had it 29-28 for Njokuani. But Castillo won the split decision.

Assuncao thinks he's Anderson Silva or Machida. I noticed this in his last fight. He thinks keeping distance is enough to win the fight. Pearson has the first two rounds comfortably, 20-18.

*EDIT* Assuncao was good early controlling, but Pearson did way more damage. 30-27 Pearson.

Shame to see Brock go, a freak athlete and regardless what you think of him.

He just didn't have the experience to stand with Overeem someone who has stood face to face with some of the best strikers in the world across multiple disciplines for years.

Not a shame to see Brock go anywhere, loud mouth got his head caved in twice and I was all the more happier for it. But anyway, that fight went as expected. I expected Brock to MAYBE be more desperate for that take down, but in the end what happened happened :)

Surprises of the night:

1. Cerrone - who looked SHOCKING from rnd 1 to rnd 3. And by shocking I meant he came out and looked like he took some sleeping tablets or something, Diaz fought VERY well, but that just wasn't the Cerrone that I've seen fight time and time again.

2. Fitch ... wow ... wow ... just wow.

Seriously. Nate clowned him, but Cerrone was defeated the minute he walked into that cage. What the hell, man?

Cerrone had the look of someone who had suffered from a hard weight cut. He got totally owned.

Nate surprisingly looked like Nick in that fight, he was that good.

Overeem was never going to lose to Lesnar. Overeem v JDS has been overdue for about 2 years now. Finally it's the only logical choice.

Oh yeah, Fitch getting KO'd in 12 seconds was the best thing I've seen since Serra KO'd GSP. I love seeing boring fighters get knocked out.

Hendricks, like Gustafsson, is on the rise in a big way.
