Morgoth 15 Posted March 9, 2012 (edited) Since I've been doing some research on which RAM to grab for my soon-to-be Ivy Bridge system, wading through all the shit, there's some good dimms and ICs to be found. One good series of RAM has just come out of Crucial (Micron owned remember). Also using their own ICs They include temp sensors too, for added curiosity satisfaction The new 4Gb and 8Gb DIMMs come in several models: Ballistix Sport: 1333 CL9 Ballistix Tactical: 1333 7-7-7-24, 1600 8-8-8-24, 1866 9-9-9-27 Ballistix Tactical Tracer: 1600 8-8-8-24, 1866 9-9-9-27 Ballistix Elite: 1600 8-8-8-24, 1866 9-9-9-27, 2000 9-11-9-27 1.65V Some reaching 2000Mhz 8-8-8-24 1t Trc40 no worries. Might as well be 2G sticks =] I'm pretty set on an 8Gb Kit for the new build, Ballistix Smart Tracers I think I'll go for couple of pictures: Ballistix Sport Ballistix Elite Ballistix Tactical Ballistix Smart Tracer sources: Xtreme Systems http://www.crucial.com/ballistix/ Edited March 9, 2012 by Morgoth
Morgoth 15 Posted March 11, 2012 iSad noones interested in 4g modules, so many people on 1155, not as much interest in different ram anymore, I for one enjoy using and tweaking good ram like I would a CPU or gpu. Anyone on here using any really capable 4g sticks??
.:Cyb3rGlitch:. 755 Posted March 11, 2012 More memory > fast memory.
Morgoth 15 Posted March 11, 2012 More memory > fast memory. Depending on task, when did more ram suddenly trounce fast ram? I know it's hit the part where overclocking/tightening timings doesn't make a big difference, but it can make 5+fps difference or more, depending on what the previous settings were. (alot when say you average 45) However, speed is still of importance when loading games, during games also, not just lifting a slight bottleneck or whatever which accounts for the couple of extra fps. Speed is still important, and now that there's good ICs in 4G modules, this allows the best of both worlds, not alot of DDR3 does this. the sticks in the OP also come in 16Gb kits (2x8), for those who need the extra, whilst still wanting high speeds with low latency. .:Cyb3rGlitch:. 755 Posted March 11, 2012 It comes down to performance per dollar. It often makes more sense to purchase a better GPU, SSD or even a CPU with more cache. Budget memory isn't exactly slow these days.
Morgoth 15 Posted March 11, 2012 It comes down to performance per dollar. It often makes more sense to purchase a better GPU, SSD or even a CPU with more cache. Budget memory isn't exactly slow these days. Very true, but I find it a bit disheartening to see people splitting hairs with cpu/gpu/ssd specs, then buying the first set of dimms in a shops list without batting an eyelid. Specs on the former are all more important, I guess I'm just one of those people who would have a niggle in the back of my mind if I owned say a top notch SSD, but the crappest ddr3 around, despite the small difference it would make. tunksy 0 Posted March 14, 2012 its buothers me too, but i still have a set of cheap arse ddr3 simply because it can reach a high enough speed that i can still get my cpu to 4.8ghz. it looks like shit tho. sexy heat spreaders sell me.as do good timings 1600 c7 for example. sadly very good ram is still quite pricey

TBH the only place I've ever noticed a difference between 1600 and 2133 is 3DMark - but its a few hundred points. That said.. I still have the niggle of wanting better RAM. These patriot sticks I have are very average. Edited March 14, 2012 by p0is0n
tunksy 0 Posted March 14, 2012 be good if crucial did the LED's activity lights back on their tracers sticks in DDR2 days. yellow/black scheme with a UV reactive DFI board... some of the best ram ive ever used were crucial.
