Why don't the latest video card appear in any suggested rig?

Recommended Posts

Just a quick question - I see the dream machine set up still prefers a 580, pages 60 - 61 of issue 135, and matches that to a 24" monitor. Is that what you really think is atomic grade material? Is that what Ben, Jon, or David would me happiest playing on? You could not see yourself desiring a 7970 matched to a 30" Dell combo if you want to call something a perfect PC?

I've noticed the trend that sometime a next generation video card is released, it gets swooned over and thoroughly recommended - but gets admitted from the Kitlog suggestions for months at a time. My personal option is its time to consider a perfect PC would probably want to drive at least a 27" Dell or a 30" quality monitor - something that could do display above 1900 * 1200 resolution without sweat - which the new high end cards seem to be fully capable of.

Just a thought,

Matthew

Now I've asked this question a few times in the past - answer seems to have been modified from opps we missed, to now we are assuming you already have a bleeding edge system.

Hawkeye's response in another thread doesn't wash well on at least three counts:

1) It's a position change without any notice from when I've previously asked this question, its ridiculous to mismatch starting from scratch (which the Kitlog does) with upgrading

2) The Kitlog itself says pg60 Iss 135 The Perfect PC ... the system everyone aspires to, with nothing but the best...

3) The Kitlog seems to have the highest end single CPU they can find an i7 3930K, but the video card and monitor is less that what Atomic editors say they use (e.g. Ben Mansill 4th Jan 2012 - Dell 30" http://forums.atomicmpc.com.au/index.php?showtopic=47125)!

To me its simply wrong - spend $45 less on the GTX 580 and get a much faster 7970 (prices AusPCMarkets) and either spend $100 more on the monitor to get a Dell U2711 27-inch with resolution 2560 x 1440 (WQHD) or spend $800 more and get a Dell U3011 2560 x 1600 resolution beastie (less if you wait for a Dell discount coupon or bulk buy) - that would match the Kitlog's description of The Perfect PC.

or spend $800 more and get a Dell U3011 2560 x 1600 resolution beastie (less if you wait for a Dell discount coupon or bulk buy) - that would match the Kitlog's description of The Perfect PC.

Without wanting to muddy things, how subjective is perfect? I know some people who don't like monitors bigger than 20-24", because they have to move their head to look around the screen, etc.

Fair point. Another example, some would also prioritise a quieter card over a ridiculously noisy one, even if it were a little slower. But if the 'objective' of the rig were clearly specified, that would remove a lot of the subjectivity.

We had started updating Kitlog for #135, but due to insufficient time to get images prepared we had to push it back to #136. It relies on the hardware guys of the mag; namely me (and we all know how bad I am at getting shit done) and Matt Wilson.

Matt's gone through and has basically put through all the changes you mention as of last month, they just haven't made it to the mag yet.
