I have finalised the build with:

10x2tb in Raid 6 (most downloads)

5x2tb in Raid 5 (special interest + backup)

1x120GB (OS drive)

Running ubuntu 12.04 with samba, mdadm, webmin.

Solely for backup purposes I have a Mirrored array on Windows 7 (2x2tb).

What do you guys think?

Inside the server looks a bit messy now, but ill take a few pics later

You're the only one who really knows what your storage needs are. Can't say you did anything wrong, though i'd probably be using something like FreeNAS instead of Ubuntu. I recently got certified with Nexenta which I like very much, but I believe its only free up to 18TB.

Are you running all 16 drives off the highpoint card?

*waits for pics*

That's what I really like to see :)

No, I'm now using onboard sata ports & 2 cards, namely:

4 Port Highpoint 2300 (pciex4)

8 Port IBM Br10i SAS/SATA cards (Flashed with latest LSI IT mode firmware) (pciex8)
