Wireless combination that blew my socks off

Recommended Posts

Placement: Router in the loungeroom, my desktop in my study. 13 meters apart with 3 concrete walls inbetween.

Internet: 70Mbps down and 10Mbps up

Out with the old

Previous router: Netgear WNDR3700

Previous Wifi dongle: TP-Link TL-WN722NC

Performance: 2 bars out of 5

Throughput: 30Mbps down and 10Mbps up

Writing to NAS: 5MBps

In come the new

Router: ASUS RT-N66U

Wifi dongle: ASUS-N53

Performance: 4 bars out of 5

Throughput: 70Mbps down and 10Mbps up

Writing to NAS: 15MBps

Up time, 1 month.

I couldn't be happier. Everything is running so smoothly. I don't have the option to run a cable, so Wifi is the only way and with this new equipment it's made everything so much more stable.

Hehe, the thread title truncated from the index to look like this:

Wireless combination that blew...

And I was kinda hoping that the next word was "up" :P

Cool that it's faster though, love Wireless N. Try tweaking channels using a SSID scanner like this to avoid congestion: http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/

Also maybe consider 5GHz if your gear supports it, much less congested and less prone to interference (though slightly less range).

Haha, yea too bad :P

This is my setup

2.4Ghz - Mobile phones, Laptops that don't support 5Ghz, Tablets

5Ghz - My desktop, TV (Connects wirelessly to the NAS) that's it

Cable: PS3, Digital TV dekoder, Raspberrypi (webserver)

Every single access point in my local area is running on 2.4Ghz. So i'm all alone on the 5Ghz band. Most channels are already suffocating on the 2.4Ghz band so i just had to find one with the least amount of inteferance, but for the devices using it it isn't a problem.

The move to 5Ghz for the desktop was a good idea seeing as it's the one device in the house both needing and sucking up all the bandwidth (Gaming, downloading, streaming ect...)

I have heard great things about those Asus units. Seriously considering getting one. I've also currently got the WNDR3700

I kid you not, it's the most stable and feature rich router i have ever used. At least so far :).

Those would be comments regarding the WNDR3700, I'm pretty happy with it.

I can pull 17mbps with it on wireless, and my ADSL connection isn't much better than that, so I don't see much point at this stage in replacing what I have, until it breaks.

But it's on my wish list!
