Star Citizen / Squadrdon 42 - a real PC game

Recommended Posts

Montoya addressing concerns of naysayers. Probably the calmest I have ever heard anyone do this job - not a single exasperated sigh.

If you watch this one, watch this one full-screen at max rez.

FTR: The thing still is not complete, which is very much not the impression that clip gives, but it does exactly what advertising is supposed to do: make you want it.

Just getting in before the poison has a chance to take effect: Glass Door review was a fake (strong suspicion on Derek Smart - again)

BTW: For anyone not following it but kinda interested, Alpha 3.2 is now live. New ships and weapons, as always, plus mining is now in (and fun!), scanning is sketched in, party size has been increased to 64 (? I think - but definitely at least 50, because I've seen the group shot), linked jumps (you and your mates' ships can jump as one unit) and orbital jumps (ie: around the planet) are in. Starting to see newbies posting in the subreddit about there being an actual *game* now - despite bugs and obvious potholes.

Link no work for me :(

Yeah, sorry about that. Got a cold/flu thing, and between posting from bed, and doing that on my 'phone, I munged it up. Try this one:

Worth the retry- thanks!

I've realised over the years that I'm pretty shit at most games...but I Do like watching them being played. This one especially looks a visual feast

You and me both, man. I don't even bother trying with a lot of them these days (some I think I might have a chance) - play on easy for a relax and just blow shit up. I've not had a great deal of time in this one yet, but the times I have got it going in the last few months, it's just getting better and better.

Admittedly, there *are* bugs atm. Big hairy ones that will eat your game. Also weirdnesses like a ship doing a dozen 360s in a second and then shooting straight up for a few hundred feet. It is improving, though.

I'm hoping that if I wait sufficient time for the bugs to be sorted then I might also have won lotto on the way so I can buy the rig to do the game justice! lol

Sweet little fan clip of something that happened recently:

I assume the janky player animations in the beginning are due to networking - the Olisar rings are spinning at about the right rate.

Full screen, max rez, and you're probably going to want to watch it more than once.

Yes, there are still a couple of issues (most notably with Gary Oldman's character animation, imho) but I think the majority is cinema quality.  And this is scheduled for release next year!

Ahem.  Pardon me for not taking "next year" as carved-in-stone gospel.  That is the single-player component, though, which is inherently less bug-prone than MMO/MP, and there are an awful lot of really good people working for them, so "close" is very believable.

Expect linkage for the full Citcon reel shortly.  The official upload is not up yet.  For now, I'll leave you with this shot (planets are 1/10th scale - it will take you a *long* time to circumnavigate a world):

Edit: Official reel being a bit tardy about showing up, I have a little unofficial footage of the CIG Citcon SC gameplay of stuff courtesy of Noobifier: [lower rez than the trailer and an odd ratio, but still good] (spot the above shot in the clip)

Holy sh...cow!  I'm going to include the whole clip for context, but specifically check out the clothing simulation at 21:35 :

Less dev time to organise, looks a lot better, *and* is faster than traditional methods?  CIG don't hire programmers - they hire wizards. ?

Yeah, I'm shouting out the airlock, I know, but...  This. Is. F'ing. AWESOME!

Get a nice relaxing beverage and snack, put your feet up, an take an hour with the art team as they show you the first actual planet and how they made it.  (Yes, the planet from the previous video, but this time you actually look at it and not the stuff going on.)

All in-game image processing - including the cinematic sunset stuff.  FOIP doing a stirling job, there.

hmm...while it would make little difference to how well done it is, have they stated categorically that this didnt get a final pass through After Effects, or similar?

... No, they have not.  They're pretty fond of touting the game's camera, though, so I assumed.  Which was probably unwise in retrospect. ?

For anyone wanting to look in on the project for themselves and see how it's going: there's a free-fly event coming up - May 1 to May 8.

Well!  If anyone is still reading this thread's occasional posts, no doubt you're aware that Forbes recently published a very unflattering piece on SC/Sq32.  To be fair to them, they weren't entirely wrong, and I think I've said similar things at various times - I certainly thought them, and I'm not very good at keeping my trap shut for long.  OTOH, they did base their 'research' seemingly entirely on the testimony of ex-employees (a famously impartial source 😛) and data at least a year (more likely 2) old, and I know I've stepped up to combat FUD before.

Here's an excellent fan piece of a much more balanced view:

Long time between drinks...  But, the game does only do quarterly major releases, so there just isn't much to say for 3 months at a time, even when there are major visible changes that I care about.

Anyway.  Here's a nice promo for the current status.  Not too in-depth, though - I'd have liked a look at current gameplay loops, and a proper coverage of known bugs, but ye take what's on offer.  (Or make your own, which is not something about which I have even the first clue.)

- fwoar, the ATD with the 3rd/1st person parity thing blew my mind

- i wonder if they could / will ever attempt to train NPC behaviour via machine learning of player behaviour?  with a big enough player base that might become feasible on day.

- i dont care about the MMO, just release Squadron 42 already!  well, i do care, but the online experience would have to be near flawless and thoroughly bug free for me to even be bothered, which likely won't happen until a long time after release anyway.

- if the SP game is moddable it could make a great canvas for playing around with A Slower Speed of Light, if only to make a far flashier educational tool out of it.

Q4, 2020.  By current projection - which of course may change.  Expect release SC about a year later, followed by innumerable service patches and updates into the future (in-game manufacturers releasing new hardware, systems being opened up by explorers, etc.)

Free-Fly week coming up: starts Monday!  That's tomorrow, as of the time of this post.  Ship rentals are gratis, and you can 'buy' into the game for nix.  If anyone reading this thread proximately to this posting wants to take a look at the game for themselves, but doesn't want to fork out real money for an unfinished game, then this is your chance.
