Star Citizen / Squadrdon 42 - a real PC game

Recommended Posts

Hopefully it lives up to the emergent gameplay promise, it sounds like it has the potential to be enthralling. I think that's one of the big parts of EVE's success, and also what has held back a lot MMOs as nothing more than WoW clones.

I think the devs are trying to keep the game as "balanced" as possible. It's really quite a feat if you think about it. There are players from all walks of life online in the game. Guilds are being created with differing alignments and I'm sure there will be thousands of lone wolves as well on both sides. I think this will be the ultimate "star wars" type universe where the scales will tip this way, then that way, and rarely there will be the threat of the ultimate "take over the universe" plot with uprisings and such. I also think the PVP and PVE issues will be relative to your locations and character class really. Just like in real life. If you want safety, join a guild and play within the controlled lawful space. There will still be plenty to do, trading, racing, exploring in groups, jobs etc. on the other hand, if you're Looking for PVP, become a merc or join a militant guild, or go lone wolf with mates, or become part of a pirate clan! I guess you could set yourself up in a pirate clan and be a merchant for them if you get a name for yourself? There will be all sorts of things going on in between guilds, good vs bad, trading, exploring, sabotage, espionage, bla bla. You're imagination and hard work will define how far you get in the game, and which way the universe will end up! The only thing preventing you from playing PVE is how you set yourself up in the game. If you're worried about losing your LTI ship, don't use it for exploring, use its speed to transport goods or passengers or its scanners to work for miners and make some credits to pick up another expendable explorer. Just think outside the box a little. I have an aurora to learn with and fool around with mods, and I have a freelancer to trade with and make some credits to fund any other ships I want to play with. I won't be doing anything that will jeopardize the LTI with these so Ill always have something to fall back on :) just take some time and talk with others to figure out how you can get what you want out of the game, that's what the devs are trying to make, a dynamic universe that responds to every little action that is performed within it! Kind of like our own lives/universe. Amazing :)

Hey good point regarding risking an LTI ship, that didn't occur to me.

So I'll generally just use my LTI ships in the zones where it's actually covered, and only hit low-sec areas with regular ships that won't break my little star-heart if I lose them.

There is no complete opt out of PVP option.

There will be a PvP/PvE slider that allows you to control how often you encounter others but even at it's lowest setting you'll still run into others on the odd occasion.

If you want solely PvE, people will be allowed to run their own servers with specific options, so look for private PvE only servers to play on.

I've never been a fan of PvP, but having it on occasion presents a challenge and it's interesting to see tactics and how your kit/skill stacks up.

Besides, you might win! Or there's always the option of bugging out. Encounters might not always result in a death/kill.

Remember PvE doesn't mean you won't get killed and loose your ship. The "good stuff" (riches) will likely be found out in nosec space where AI can still kill you and you will still not be covered by insurance.

The main goal with the information we have, is for the Ausmonauts to secure a planet of our own in LOSEC space that boarders our Allies. Our Allies will be able to cover all time zones, with an attack on us being an attack on all them. The Alliance stands at around 400 pilots.

This is the first I've read of this. Neat idea!

Is there a thread somewhere I can read more on this plan?

And yeah, my biggest fear with being an explorer is being way out alone when some pirate tard swoops in and fucks me up. Maybe we can have explorer squads, all sticking together or at least close by as we sweep through deep space.

Could be a good plan.

One scenario, two stealthed explorer ships pinging away with active sensor scans. Someone else pops up on sensors, you both go dark and cover each other as you move along or wait for bogey to pass.

Nice thinking.

And perhaps when we find a particularly valuable thingo, leave it there, move away a short distance so not to attract attention to that location, and call for an escort from some Ausmonaut teamys to bring it safely back to base.

Ive got the pathfinder LTI package, but im worried im going to hate the game and that ive actually paid $75 for a game that might be something that i dont want to play at the end of the day. I love freelancer, but hate Eve for example, and seeing all the info out on it so far, its starting to appear like a eve clone to me, i hate all games with forced pvp or with no complete opt-out; take eve for eg: wondering into LoSec zones alone will get you killed if your not careful (just a matter of time), now getting killed by itself doesn't worry me, losing my ship permanently does (as insurance doesn't cover you out in the unknown or losec according to info available, subject to change of course). however one could argue you dont have to leave HiSec space if you dont want to risk everything, thats not the point, eve has 1 server and everything pretty much goes like it or not, freelancer style was: create your own server, be it pve/pvp/mixed, dont want pvp, never join a pvp server, problem solved. So if that gameplay mechanic makes it into the finial product without a full pvp opt-out (be it freelance style or however they want to implement it), i wont play at all, ill just sell the account or ship for my money back.

Dont suppose there are any others here who aren't interested in the pvp side of things like myself and just want to go out and explore with the probability of stumbling into something awesome with a chance of finding something worth alot of $$ without worrying about someone trying to grief you on purpose for no other reason then they can.

The Ausmonauts will be hosting our own server nobody as well as being active in the Online persistent universe. So it will be like freelancer in that aspect. I am sure we'll be able to toggle the pvp settings off. We were thinking of getting Amazon hosting to do this for us. However, you will not be alone. The are plenty of us who want to explore the far reaches of the Star Citizen Universe.

Me too. That's how I plan to spend a big chunk of time playing, though I'm totally open if the game mechanics offer a variety of stuff that's cool to do. I mean - I KNOW there will be tonnes of other stuff to do - I'm just keeping an open mind and will give everything a shot.

I'm also with the Ausmonauts and that whole guild life thing is absolutely fascinating. I've never been part of a large scale thing like this before and the guild's goal of taking and holding a system sounds ultra cool, so with all that I'll be a happy little soldier doing whatever it takes to support all that.

You'll have fellow explorers that will be Wingman to you Flouncy

Details are basic at the moment Erad. At the moment It is a non aggression pact with Sanctuary Republic, Nexus Corporation, Black Widow Company and Us. I think there maybe a fifth group Valinor Aerospace that are looking to join. So an attack on us will be an attack on all the alliance. There are other basic things such as members being tards and stirring up trouble for the alliance in general. With to many infractions seeing that member being ejected from the alliance. Still early days yet. Soon I will be advertising for Officers for our Star Citizen squadron. One of the positions will involve being a diplomat and liaison officer to the other squadrons.

Flouncy the scenario you suggest with two stealthed ships might work. It is all going to boil down to the configurations of those ships in minimising their signature to other vessels. Such as engine configurations and computer cores. The Avenger I picked up will be best suited to the role I think of flying AWACS with the potential of jamming signals. If you were pinging away with active radar, I would go to the coordinates of were the signal stopped and start looking for glints of metal reflecting of you hull from the star in the system. Hopefully we will be able to have some sort of passive radar system. There is one thing I have learned from modern jet fighter sims is that pinging away with active radar for long periods of time, is bad for your health :P

I remember backing this.

Thing is, I know it has potential, but as far as the micro-transactions go, this seemed to turn me off a bit. We'll see how it goes when it eventually gets released to the public.

New ship stats page launched last nite. Not 100% complete as all the stats aren't even available but now there is the ability to compare ships. Handy

Yeah I still wanna see relative speed and range, so it all has relevance and I better understand what, for example, the 315p's relative advantages actually are against the 350r. Or 350r vs the M50.

So speed, fuel economy, range, all that are needed but I understand those stats will be tweaked through dev, and especially after alpha/beta testing.

this, i choose 315p over freelancer because i want to explore, but still able to dish out some damage or make a speedy exit if things got hairy with npc's defending some treasure, wasnt expecting the cargo space being so radically different; 8t vs 20t for eg.

cant wait for some hard stats to see how much different the two explorer ships really are.

im abit annoyed that the 300i ships/pledges come with the discount hanger, it was advertised as the BMW of space ships, so was expecting min business class hanger.

but on the plus side, the hanger module gets released tomorrow, should be nice to finally get to walk around in the hanger, and walk around in the ship :)

and important info from the RSI forums:

For those backers that don’t haunt the RSI forums wondering about the 5k gift mentioned during the hangar reveal:

You’ll have access to the $5k they’re giving everyone plus any additional bonus funds your eligible for, (eg.. original or veteran bonuses credits) to spend in the in-hangar shop.

However, as the game requires money to start playing you won’t have access to the starting credits that come with any ship packages though.

eg.. like the 1k that the Digital Scout comes with.

This way keen folk don’t spend all their money at once and find they’re unable to play the game at launch.

Any purchases you make will stick with your account from now on so spend wisely as there will be no resets or refunds apparently.

If you buy something you don’t intend to use you’ll have to on-sell it to other players (once that is implemented) to get your money back.

Hanger Release Imminent

Their servers are probably gonna die for a while when it goes live. Figure Friday arvo would be a good time to try (Probably 5am Fri launch)

@nobodyishere - AFAIK hangers are based on total amount pledged.

Yes the packages you buy come with a pre set hanger (eg Discount for Aurora and Business for lancer/hornet), but if you pledge over (I think it's) $350 you automatically get the deluxe hanger regardless of what packages/skins etc you bought. I've not heard of a default pledge level to get Business, so not sure if the pledge amount thing only happens with deluxe or not.

300i's deserve discount imo. Otherwise, what, just the Aurora goes in the discount hanger?

300i's are "BMW's" but they're the cheaper end 1 series imo. Not 6 or M series.

You will be able to up grade your hanger in the game though, so don't worry.

downloaded the hanger module, the basic hanger is small, and very dark, even with all the led lights everywhere, compared to the amount of light available in the business/deluxe hangers in youtube videos. the 315ps interior is alittle more cramped then i imagined from the concept pictures, and very spartan, but considering this is all pre-alpha stuff, its shaping up nicely.

Fps in the module is all over the place, from 32fps when standing still to 7fps when moving, game defaulted to 1024x768, but managed to change it to 1920x1080, no changes in fps performance, which was surprising considering im using my radeon 7750 2g ddr3 edition with core OC'd to 900mhz, missing my GTX680 :(

hows everybody else going?

Yeah fps is atrocious, and it won't go up to my native res (2560x1600), to be in anyway usable have to cut detail back and drop res down. It looks absolutely terrible, is un-fun to use and be in and overall is a big disappointment. Too rushed, terrible first impression.

They noted a few times in videos of the hanger releases that level of detail hasn't been done yet. So you're getting max polys all the time everywhere. FPS will definitely be improving as they iterate.

Hype will get you like that. I'll be trying it out in a few hours time but I'm trying to not expect too much.

Being pre alpha, it'll only ramp up from here.

Will see if I can run at full 30" res. Curious you couldn't Flounce. Maybe out of VRAM if they're pushing max details for everything with no LOD enabled??

Hows it go for system RAM usage? Supposed to ideally want 8GB. I've only 6GB, so will see in a bit when it's done downloading.

Max res was 1920 x 1080 or something like that.

I know it's 'alpha' - but it's a single room. With the most basic conceivable geometry. Holding one or a handful of relatively simple objects which just sit there. And no apparent even remotely sophisticated lighting.

Using a well established off the shelf engine.

Didn't check RAM usage, but I have 16GB of the fast stuff. And a 3GB 7970.

Task manager showed max 2.93gb usage in game, but thats in the discount hanger with only the 315p ship, i wouldn't been too concerned unless your in business or delux with 4+ ships

Yeah, I suppose it must be the ships. They do have a few polys, and my hanger is holding three, can't really be anything else.

e:now it doesn't work at all. 'Connection timed out'.

Nice hangar, yours. Mine's the business one (I think), all ultra bright and clean. I like the look of yours better.

Really? o.O i think the business one oozes class, the deluxe one looks a little too much out of starwars. the discount hanger is too basic, it has nothing to interact with, has almost no room for decorations or collectables (which will be added to the game at a later date), it borders too much on claustrophobic for my tastes.

business is the one thats mostly silver tones and glass, deluxe is mostly red tones.

So I pledged the digital scout level back when this was on kickstarter.

Just looking now at game packages and what I can buy from there.

Is it worth grabbing one of the more expensive packages now?
