Star Citizen / Squadrdon 42 - a real PC game

Recommended Posts

Can't say I've been following this game very closely but after reading through this thread and then hitting up their website, I'm about to take the plunge and pledge. Question is, how much, which ship... So many good options!

It doesn't really matter what you get now because of course the whole game is built around buying and upgrading different ships, so what you end up with in a year or two may be totally different to your expectations now.

Perhaps start with just a single capable all-rounder, like the Aurora, or upsize that a bit to the 315/325/350 series, or the Freelancer with its bigger cargo hold, and take it from there. Over the years ahead there will be many new ships introduced.

The important thing is to be excited now and start worshiping it as your new gaming religion - because almost every week something new and funky is announced. And most of all, join in the Church of Roberts, the one true PC game developer.

Everything can be earned in game, and ships with variants can be 'crossbred' to make any combination of parts/abilities possible.

Aurora is probably the most versatile ship, and cheap as chips. 300i is pretty configurable too in terms of roles. Anything above those and you need to think about the dedicated roles they're more designed for.

If unsure get the base model Aurora or 300i. Either will give you plenty of upgrade potential and be adaptable to various roles down the road.

I am seriously considering the Super Hornet (Weekend Warrior).

Is there an expected release date for this yet? I'm at work so half the websites with any news about it, are blocked.

The video ad is just pure space porn :D

I've just had a crisis!

That was pure, unadulterated, space pornography.

And I loved it!

Dogfighting module is slated for end of this year.

Various modules come on line every few months after that, with the finished full release game aimed at early 2015.

Saw this thread (What if a different developer made SC...?) on SC forums and had to repost it here; enjoy!

I know this is the internet, but please keep in mind this post is satire and purely for your entertainment. Now enjoy…

Blizzard

Half the players skip the campaign and try to go online on release day. During the first six weeks the situation does not change. Blizzard officials state, they did not expect so much players online despite 4 million pre-orders.

There are only 6 different ship models, 50% of all payers use the same ship model.

All weapons depend on damage per second, good weapons can only be brought in the Voyager Direct store for real money.

The complete game is based on the Starcraft Universe.

The game features missions like: Kill 10 Pirates, collect 20 asteroid crystals, slay pirate captain Butcher, after 6 weeks every player has killed pirate captain Butcher for at least 75 times.

You must grind to Level 20 to aquire the skill for flying a starship, it costs every credit you have earned so far, after 2 years the skill level is lowered to 10 and the cheapest ship is free for new players.

The Death Knight Starfighter is completely op.

The best weapon in game can only be obtained by grinding Pirate Captain Duriel.

Chinese Gold farmers occupy all lucrative asteroid fields.

Most people stop playing SC after 3 months.

Servers get flodded with new players for 6 weeks every time Blizzard releases a Mission Disk.

Electronic Arts

They set a new record for gaming development costing 500 million USD.

The chief executive smiles to the press saying SC is the most expensive game so far that has ever been made, while driving off in his Ferrari GTO.

A fan made multiplayer mod featuring state of the art weapons and more complex ship models is more successful online than the original multiplayer. EA decides to hire the developer team using their starship models for SC 2. They fire all of the team before the launch of the game.

SC 2 is released only on next gen consoles.

A PC version is released one year later, it works only with NVIDIA cards. An ATI patch is released after 2 months. The game features the same ugly textures like the console version.

You have to be always online for playing the campaign. An EA account is needed and an extra log-in tool has to be installed. People notice it's spyware.

After protests from players an offline mode is released. Due to technical difficulties only one seat starships can be flown offline.

EIDOS

The end of the single player campaign is a cliffhanger, the multiplayer part has no reference to the campaign.

The game can only be installed 5 times.

Auto aiming is always on.

Peter Molyneux

In a first attempt Molyneux wants to crowdfund the game. Only 50% can be funded on kickstarter, Molyneux has to start from scratch.

Molyneux promises a complete new gaming experience where the player can rise from a fatherless grease monkey on an old space freighter to a legendary space god, ruler of half the universe. It takes 12 hours of gaming time to reach this.

The interface for setting up your ship is inconvenient but players don’t use it anyway since all weapons do the same amount of damage.

There are children on every planet and they hate you.

Your ship has an intelligent AI, which needs to be instructed with repetitive actions, kicking the hull speeds up learning.

Your friends can join your crew online, but only with pre-made characters, any equipment and credits are lost for them when logging off.

Credits have practically no value after the first two weeks, every player earns millions from renting out their ships to NPC while being offline.

There is no upgradeable hull armor.

Ramming the enemy ship is more effective than shooting.

Valve

Releases the campaign in 2 parts with a cliffhanger at the end, 15 years later the third part is announced, then re-scheduled.

The game is re-released countless times. Meanwhile SC: Undead Citizens is released featuring battles against zombie pilots who fly twice your speed.

While still waiting for the third campaign part SC: Undead Citizens 2 is released. It sucks.

Activision

The game gets a sequel every year, starting with SC 2942, 2943 and a spin off 2942: Universes at War.

Every released jump point costs 14,99 USD.

Microsoft

The game is released exclusively for XBOX One.

All the clothes and visual outfits of your character have to be brought on xbox live, a Pirate leather jacket costs 2,99 USD, the characters are not allowed to carry guns. The ships have to be controlled via kinect.

There is no offline mode, gamers protest, Microsoft argues that everybody is online anyway these days

Unknown indiegame team

The game is browser based and features only low resolution textures.

It is released during Alpha at half price. The developers did not expect a huge success and have no idea yet about future content.

There is no interaction between NPC and the player, but you can put their ships on fire.

The ships have to be be build from parts that can be gathered on the planets and need to be repaired manually in the hangar by setting up logical circuits.

Teachers use the game to teach kids about Newtonian physics.

Riot Games

The game sets a new record for a player base with more than 50 million active players.

Every squadron is highly dependant on one player flying the fuel ship. No player wants to fly the fuel ship.

Starships can flash jump every 5 minutes.

Accounts of flaming and aggressive players get perma banned, Brazil gets its own server after constant complaints from players on the US servers.

The constellation is the most shot down ship because of at least one of the crew members always rage quitting after arguing who gets to fly the Merlin.

The game is free-to-play, players buying expensive ship skins are harassed on the forums.

Bioware

The game features an interesting and beautiful plot but the ending starts an outrage in the gaming community and players demand a different ending. The multiplayer part features no PU, all players can only chose from pre-configured ship models.

You can start a sexual relationship with your ships hot looking repair android.

Bethesda

The voice acting of all characters is performed by 4 people

You stumble upon UEE soldiers on every planet telling you how they got a blaster shot to the knee.

DLC for Star Citizen is released, the PU instances are fractioned because most players refuse to pay the high prices for every add on.

After the fifth patch the bug ridden game is half way playable.

Planet instances feature horses.

CCP Games

A handful of developers make a tech demo during their free time. Management forces them to build a basic game from the tech demo in 3 months. People stand in queue lines for hours to play the demo on gaming exhibitions for 3 minutes. The full game features 5 minute missions. It takes hours to collect fuel and ammo before each mission. Players with 5 accounts merging ressources to one account dominate the online game.

Developers promise that the game will feature full joystick support and the ability to walk around your ship. 10 years after release they celebrate the 10th anniversary. Other space sims that year feature 8k graphics, full virtual reality mind control of space ships and a peaceful helping community. SC players still wait for promised joystick support.

Lucas Arts

SC is announced with an impressive cut scenes video. Two years later Lucas Arts abruptly cancels the game entirely citing economic and market conditions.

3D Realms

After 14 years of development it gets 54 points metascore on metacritic.com

ID Software

...when it's done…

You are welcome to post your game developer version of SC.

lol nice

nobody you in a clan/guild/fleet for SC?

nope, no plan to go into the PU, unless a full pvp opt-out, will see how long the pvp slider stays in its current form/idea.

otherwise, will be playing on my own private server, or my mates dedicated server.

just bought an avenger ship, just for business class hanger access, till i can afford to buy a ghost hornet, i like the idea of helping support development of SC, with updates also being pushed to private servers.

melted my pathfinder package (315p) + avenger ship + the shut up and take my money ship skin; for store credit, then used the credit to buy the specter package (ghost hornet). next pay ill buy the 315p as a addon ship, that way, ill start off with 5k credits from the package vs 2k credits of the pathfinder, and still have my 315p and ghost hornet combo just in case the pvp issue gets changed later down the track.

edit: just melted the ghost hornet. re-purchased 2x pathfinder lti packages + next gen Aurora lti package. After thinking about it more, id rather have a spare 315p on standby incase my main one gets blown up, so i dont have to wait on insurance to replace it, and the aurora can be my backup backup ship lol, will probably end up buying the ghost hornet ingame.

Makes me so happy my favourite gaming/tech community is big into Star Citizen :) The fact that our head honcho (Dave) is putting it on the front page so often is the best thing that could happen. Even if people are part of Ausmonauts/other groups, it'll be great if we form a loose Atomic alliance between individuals for occasional 'raids' and what not.

So far, I've been collecting a group of the 'faster' ships in addition to one Starfarer for hauling junk around. Right now that's: Aurora Legionnaire, 325a, 350r, Super Hornet, Scythe, Cutlass, Freelancer, Constellation and Starfarer. I'm basically hoping that I can fly PvE for the most part and then hold my own when a PvPer throws themselves in my face.

Oh and if you want a fix for your Star Citizen kicks for now, Diaspora is pretty much the next best thing. Intense dogfighting with 6 degrees of freedom in near-Newtonian physics set in the Battlestar Galactica universe: Diaspora: Shattered Armistice Free standalone mod and has full support for flight controllers including TrackIR.

I didn't at first, but now I do - fuck I love Wingman's Hanger. Now it's a real show and the synergy between the main guys is rocking, very entertaining, and of course, laden with facts and info and STUFF.

Yeah I've said it the moment I threw money at them, if you're interested in SC and have pledged anything towards it, Wingsmans hanger is essential viewing. It's been getting better and better too.

The Alistare Fitsmithy (sp?) readings when a jump point come out are great. Especially the last one, funny as.

I started watching when ep20 was out, went back and watched about 5 previous ones, and have been keeping up with it ever since.

And for those slackers not subscribing, you can get the jump points for free after a while from here

interesting news in the 29million letter from the chairman!

Last time we asked you to vote on a role for the next ship we build, and the resounding answer was that Citizens want to have a mining ship. We’re happy to oblige, but I’ll go ahead and warn you that mining in Star Citizen is going to be a lot more immersive than what you’ve seen before; you won’t be clicking on an asteroid until you’ve collected metal!

-- RSI Orion – Roberts Space Industries’ goal has always been to make the stars available to individual Citizens. Now, with the RSI Orion mining platform, RSI is letting individuals take over a process formerly controlled by megacorporations. The Orion’s features include high-grade turret-mounted tractor beam arrays, durable exterior-accessible ‘saddlebags’ for mineral storage and a cabin designed by the team that brought you the Aurora and Constellation!

so mining ships are officially in, next up according to the poll so far: salvage ship!

Just sat through The Next Great Starship stuff... Seriously, a little polish, and all 10 of the finalists would be good game assets. Those that have made it this far (round 13 I think) are very cool indeed - especially considering that no team has more than 3 people, and a couple of them are just one person.

For anyone who wasn't aware of the comp, all episodes are available from here:

Er, beware the episode length. You're looking at in excess of 8 hours of video if you go from end to end.

God damn I'm excited for the DFM, I've got an Origin 325a Fighter but I keep eyeing off the RSI Constellation, it's not cheep but damn it'd be a nice stylish ride, insurance would have to be a must though. does anyone have one, is it worth the price?

Between this and Elite I don't think 'll see the light of day especially if I spoil myself with that DK 2 rift I've been eyeing off.

The future come at me!
