What of Atomic?

Recommended Posts

Ben, Dave, Ashton and Logan, can I just say thank you all for the effort you have put in to firstly produce the mag from nothing into something as awesome as the Atomic brand.

FTFY..

Actually, strike that - I probably don't want to know...

You mean Foods throwing himself at you wasn't a hint?

Hopefully Dave will let me post this. Obviously this is Hulkster. I have been banned and know this wont help my cause but it's important for me to have a say here.

12 Years of my life has been spent involved with the mag or site in some form or another. Even wrote for it for a bit (Moz and I)

Reading Daves news made me very sad.

Ben, Dave, Ashton and I have forgotten one or two, can I just say thank you all for the effort you have put in to firstly produce the mag from nothing into something as awesome as the Atomic brand.

Just fucken Brillant.

Sad day.

Ok Dave, do what you have to. Ouch!!! :)

I thought you were unbanned? I distinctly remember that happening in fact.

Much love David.

I stopped buying the mag in recent years so this won't effect me.

Glad that the forums are still kicking though. I wouldn't know what to do.

All good. I like PC&TA as well, I don't sub, but regularly by the mags from the shelf as I do Atomic...

Sad that Atomic is no longer stand alone, but I feel confident about this change, well done guys. I might look at subbing next year as well.

IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!

You know, it kinda is, it kinda isn't.

People's habits change, and I've never thought there was any profit in getting angry at people moving on from a print offering. I think it's more the case that, yes, as people have moved on our sales have dropped; is that their 'fault'? I don't think so. Well, I'm not going to blame them, at least :)

So the 16 extra pages in the other mag. Will that be 16 pages of atomic content or is the mag growing by 16 pages and there will be more than 16 pages of atomic content?

I assume it'd vary from issue to issue?

I have to admit that I've wondered why a lot of the content of the magazine was essentially given away free on the website. It felt like by the time I bought the magazine on the news stand, I'd read a lot of it already....

the mag often had more words though than the words on the site for the same article.

But that's also the nature of news. If something comes out at the start of the month, you'll read about it everywhere and then a month later in print in the mag.

Well, Atomic's Gameplay section has always varied, for instance, so it would in PC&TA as well. So to hardware reviews

But the aim is the make that sixteen pages count. Packed out gaming when needed, packed out hardware when there's lots of stuff. Plus features and columns. News. Cool stuff. John and I are really going to make those 16 pages count!

Yeah, that was always going to be a difficult thing to manage, but the fact is only three or so people have ever even commented on it. I certainly never heard anything negative about it, even when I was talking about making that change. But the web, if you're going to be on it, needs to be up to date.

But that's the huge challenge of running a website AND a magazine, and wanting both to be relevant.

Thanks for your persistence to keep the printed mag going, Dave, I'm betting this could easily have happened earlier than it has!

Cheers!

If you will be allocated 16pages in PC TA how much DVD space will be allocated too. Be cool to see some reviews put on the DVD too ,or some benchmarking programs.

One bonus latex fist to Hawkeye if he manages to gradually expand the Atomic content in PC&TA until the point that it is consumed and renamed to Atomic MPC.

Love you guys spyder and hulks. Thanks for dropping by.

Really nice post katalyst, and the photo. Jeez we did stuff. Fucken art. ART. One big thing about atomic, it's covers have always been beautiful. Every single one over so many years. Except the flouro orange sound one. That was BIG mistake :}

Well, I think that might be more than a little unfair to my PC & TA readers!

But as to the DVD, yes, that is definitely a part of the strategy of moving across. We want to include demos, hot trailers, benchmarks, all kinds of cool stuff. Maybe even get some good video content going.

Have to admit, I thought my reaction to this news would be to gloat given my relationship with atomic and its community ended on a very sour note. But oddly, it's not. Guess I've still got a bit of a sentimental spot for what atomic and its community was to me from when I first joined up at 16 through my early years as a young adult. I made a lot of friends (and yes, even a few enemies) here, had some great chats and insightful discussions, and heck I even got to exploring the rest of Australia through events like atomic Live and m33t. My housemate for the past two years up to a month ago was an atomican. I went to the casino out with Perth atomicans last weekend and to the pub the next day. It's pretty profound how the magazine has laid the slab for a lot of people's personal lives.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't see this coming. The past 18 months in particular, you could kind of see everything slow to a halt. The forums became a bit of a Wild West, which I think sort of reflected the lack of... energy, I guess?... down at atomic HQ. I know it's the magazine that's going down, but let's face it, this time next year there won't be anybody here, the last real common factor holding the place together has dissolved.

I won't lie, I disagreed severely with the way things were going over the past two or three years and I still do, but I guess in spite of it all I will fondly remember the positive parts atomic had to play in my formative years and I do thank you all for that.

For what it's worth, I bid you all a fond farewell. Those of you who I quarrelled with, I was angry at you for a long time, but I have more or less buried the hatchet now. Those who I always liked on here, come find me on FB - the PAC can point you to me. Those I already know, see you in the world.
