May as well get the ball rolling...

Recommended Posts

I just thought I'd bring back the feel of the Security Section of the old forums in one thread instead of the 35,000 queries on this matter the old section seemed to consist of.

In my occasional forays into Windows land (i.e. when I sync my iPhone) I use the following:-

Anti virus: Avast

http://www.avast.com/

Firewall: Comodo

http://www.comodo.com/

Free free free!!!

And not too much trouble to set up and use.

Edit:-

oooh pictures....

Edit again..

...well maybe not.

No antivirus, and a terribly old version of Kerio Personal Firewall which just drips in awesomeness.

Good god man, at least run clamav over the poor thing on occasion. And just how old is your firewall? You do realise there are newer, free version around, such as Ashampoo.?

You realize running a vulnerable firewall is worse than no firewall right?

Using Trend micro PC Cillin 2008 currently. does the trick.

not a fan of free AVG, ANY version.

firewall: use a router i suggest as its a good start.

best way to NOT get hit by bad stuff online is to stay away from the pretty boobies and game cracks/cheats sites.

kind of hard to to of course, but thats your best defence. ;)

If that's your goal, you did a really shithouse job when choosing a thread title.

Might I suggest you request a moderator change it to something more meaningful.

I recently just switched over.

I use in the way of security:

Avast AV

Zone Alarm Free

Spybot SD

AdAware

and PeerGuardian

Not to mention some ad and script blocking plugins in firefox with WOT which is another nice addon.

For detection rates, and free: Antivir.

for free firewall, ZoneAlarm.

My preferred:

Antivirus: Nod32

Firewall (none, SPI router firewall): but NetLimiter to limit access or not only.

I personally use Eset Smart Security(From same company as NOD32), paid for 1yr subscription...

Fine product imho, no problems/security breaches yet...

Before that used AVG/AntiVir/Nod32 + seperate firewall and spyware removal....

Will definitely be getting another subscription when this one terminates...

AVG 8.0 and Comodo Firewall Pro.

Hating the new AVG due to the number of false positives it finds, so I'll switch to Avast or something eventually.

Yeah i use AVG, and on the topic of false positives (what and oxymoron XD) i went to install Adobe Reader yesterday arvo and it failed because AVG detected that the setup file was a "Generic Trojan". Like WTF, seriously??

As for a firewall, i have a router and have all the ports blocked except the ones i use, only a handful. And i you windows firewall, cos i'm slack and can't be bothered getting a 3rd Party one.

Oh my.

AVG and Commodo for me ^_^

I'm also considering dropping AVG for something else soon.

I've had similar problems with AVG detecting Trojans in legit software.

Seriously what's wrong with it? Sure it only blocks inbound but that's all I need it for.

iptables on Debian.

Windows firewall on XP.

No AV.

I accidentally infected a machine yesterday and thoughtI'd give AVG a go before reverting to my rescue image.

First and last time I'll use it.

It made life hard by being one of those retarded programs that has no comprehension of Windows colour schemes and themes, and instead just uses its own hardcoded colour scheme. I consider any commercial Windows product that does this to be shit.

And it didn't fix things.

I'm open to suggestions for next time, though. Would very much appreciate a free antivirus tool to have on standby that I can actually see to use without having to fuck about with screen colour inverters and the like.

Suggestions, anyone?
