Non-Atomican Atomican

Recommended Posts

OK. Just so you know, I was a subscriber or bought every single edition of Atomic mag. For a while I didnt subscribe because I liked buying it from the newsagent, then I realized it was cheaper to subscribe and went back to that. Sometimes I read a copy 2-3 times. My better half thinks it was exactly my kind of mag, even though as an I. T professional I should have been reading something more (business) serious. She laughs when she catches me "surfing for hard drives". She tells friends my porn is cheap computer parts and vintage computer bits.

The thing is I dont feel very atomican. What I'd like to know is, it is possible to be an non-atomican atomican and still be atomican?

Here's some evidence:

- I like to read game reviews... but I dont game. At least I havent since Red Alert and Wing Commander Prophecy. (I got the shits with the XBOX360 I got as a gift, waiting for games to load so I dont use it).

- I have upgraded my machine incessantly... but I'm always obsolete...

1. I started with a Core2Duo 6600 when everyone was buying quad cores

2. 3-4 years later I upgraded the motherboard to a ASUS Gene, but its still DDR2 (cheap on ebay) and a Q9650 quad core 3GHZ cos it was cheap - whilst friends were buying i7-920's or soon thereafter newer 2nd Gen Cores. I'm now 2 generations behind.

3. Another year later and I buy a velociraptor because it was on special even though friends were buying SSD's. Because I always wanted one.

4. I buy an old 4870x2 gpu from ebay even thought I dont game (it dies a year later, gets replaced by the worlds slowest media centre gpu from a friends HTPC). Everyone else is buying 560, 570,580's.

5. Another year later and I find another 4GB of DDR2 to take it to 8GB (woot).

6. Same friend gives me 2 old 9600GT GPU's... I think I'll SLI them but for now one seems ok.

7. Another year later.... I finally buy an SSD for it. So here I am about 6 or more years on and 4 generations behind in CPU and I'm still upgrading it.

8. And I really should have thrown it all out and bought a brand new i7....

Other evidence against...

- I dont like Angry Birds. It makes me angry for no reason.

- Forum post speak makes no sense to me.

- Games benchmarks dont seem as interesting as Dhrystones and other old world types

- I dont online game because people are rude (I've seen my nephew online game and he turns into something.... nasty)

- I buy old Apple machines on eBay and upgrade them to use all over the house (I dont think an atomican really uses apple unless its at work or they are a graphic designer)

- I bought a Raspberry PI, waited f%&king forever for it, and only looked at it once. What is it actually good for? Should I really just attach a camera to it and launch it into space? What's the point? Maybe I should throw it into the ocean - can it webcast from a reef? I dont think so.

- My forum posts are so non-atomican that no one ever replies to them. Changing my ID didnt help.

Evidence for.

- I never get tired of reading about new keyboards, even though it must be the most boring thing in the world.

What I'd like to know is, it is possible to be an non-atomican atomican and still be atomican?

Yes, by virtue of the fact that being non-atomican is impossible because there is no concrete definition of what being an atomican actually is. You cannot be the opposite of something that has never been quantified in the first place.

Therefore, everyone is an atomican. There are just a lot of people who don't realise it yet.

I rest my case.

if you can build or upgrade a computer, you're an atomican. Being good at at least 1 video game helps too, i dont want no scrubs

Your blank reply is ironic, poetic and appropriate, thanks.

What's a scrub? See this is probably a term out of a game that everyone knows.

This is an impossibly circular argument. Plus I think there have been lots of quotes on what is an Atomican, I'm going to have to go thru my old pile of magazines. Your post is smart but also a bit irritating and I think I can counter argue by bringing in an example about Dark Matter and Dark Energy I just need to think about it a bit more. On the positive side I notice the "Amiga4eva" tag on your quote and I am reminded I dont have one in my collection and need to switch over to ebay quickly now. The question is 1000, or something like a 4000? I dont like the 500 types.

So really what you're saying is that you feel like you don't fit in here and you've listed things that you think would make you fit in and so you'd like us to justify you fitting in here?

I know what you are saying

I would have more tech toys than anyone else here

But I have not owned a console since the original PlayStation. And I do not use my PC for gaming

But in my defence, I did get a smartphone 18 months ago

Yeah...

Sorry i'm not getting the point of the OP.

What are you trying to say? do you need us to find reasons why you are an atomican?

Most of the people on this forum have nothing in common other than the magazine / forum....

Nope. Although maybe it seems self indulgent, which now makes me feel silly. Actually if I think about it what I want to know is if anyone else read Atomic and the web site and sometimes even posted in the forums, but only did so because the whole thing is incredibly interesting even though you dont do or share any of the activities like gaming, going to the events, leet-speak and so on.

You make a good point tho.

But are those quotes authoritative? What gives them so much weight in your eyes? My post isn't smart. It's simple. You are only feeling unable to fit in because of your own construct - in your mind - of what it is to be an Atomican. As far as I know there is no one definition that sits above all others, and if there is, it's probably just a popular opinion rather than cold hard fact. So relax a little. There's all types here, trust me.

All types.

Good, bad, nerdy, non-nerdy, girls, guys, fornicators and procrastinators. We're all here.

So chill out.

PS - What you want, ideally, is an Amiga 1200 or 1200HD. You get the benefits of an AGA chipset that's (mostly) backwards compatible, a more modern design and slightly less bulky than the 500, 1000 etc (but if portability is a real concern the 600 is a great catch). Whatever model you get, grab yourself a HxC Floppy Emulator as well. Rip the floppy power and data cable out of the guts of the Amiga and plug it into the HxC, viola! The entire Amiga library of games and software can be yours on flash card.

Knock yourself out big guy.

This is understand. I think its like, you can read architectural digest, but otherwise not give a shit about architecture, and still live in a house, but not want to necessarily change it.

Ok but Atomic didn't start out focusing on gaming, it started out focusing on the tech/puter.

I'm sure a lot of 'Atomicans' have never been to an event.

Leet speak and so on just comes from the various areas/cultures that this forum/mag brings together.

I've got more of an interest in gaming, but I jump out into other sections of the forum that interest me as well.

You on the other hand have interest in other areas to me. yet we are both on here.

There are many people here that have never been to any of the events, several that don't play games at all... sadly this is decribing me more and more.

And i don't think I've seen leet speak for about 7 years now.

I can build video games and I'm good at computers :p .... But I don't classify myself as an 'Atomican', based on traits and actions exhibited by the majority of members of this forum.

I was probably an "atomican" 10+ years ago, but not now :p

Last game I played was over ten years ago. Last time I put together a computer was five years ago. That was when I joined atomic; I wanted a build recommendation, and I kind of kept coming back because it was interesting and the old ihug forums that I used to visit had been wrapped up. In fact, I've become something of a neo Luddite; these days I'm a user who simply emails, and visits two forums, with a Mac laptop from 2008 that has no battery in it. I just don't have much connection to tech stuff anymore, except for audio and video, which is all doable on my shitty machine. To further my heretical admissions, I've never even seen a printed copy of Atomic. I met, for the first time, someone off here, Robzy, not even two weeks back. I feel that I don't fit exactly fit here, but I don't feel like I fit in many places. I got used to that feeling long ago, and these days I try to dismiss it as being overly self conscious. I suspect I'm not the only one. I've never been asked to leave here. So welcome (: Edited by komuso

Does a post need a point?

For the record I often feel like a bit of a misfit here on the forums, but I don't really care. In other misfit situations I've come out the other end with really positive experiences. I like to read some of the tech threads to catch up on things. I love reading the green room even though sometimes it makes my brain go to jelly. I like it here.

I did enjoy reading the magazines and subscribed for a few years. Have a new subscription to PC & Tech but I find the layout much less attractive, so still haven't finished reading my first issue, I just skim read whereas old atomic I would read cover to cover.

And hey look...you got replies!

Oh man, it's been a while since I saw dhrystones and whetstones being measured.

IMO a 4000T if you can find one.

And then get a 600 and do a briefcase mod, just because you can.

i haven't benched for probably half a decade; i confess i have bought possibly one issue of atomic, or maybe not even one

on the plus side i have posted a product review here, and contributed for quite some time almost entirely in the green room

in my wardrobe are a clutch of socket a and 939 boards, a shitload of great ram (bh5, tccd) and over a dozen primo steppings for both platforms

every computer (that's 4 - one for each family member) in my house barring the htpc is pimped, and even that has all custom parts - all were built by me from mostly 2nd hand parts from here or ocau

but overall i think xyzzy has the right idea :

" Just be opinionated and argumentative.

You'll fit right in."

- I hate Angry Birds - but not so much for the game (which is pointless but inoffensive), but for the touchscreen control methodology especially on a 'phone. The firing area does not give sufficient draw or angular resolution for accurate shots. IMO, of course.

- "Forum-Speak"...Well, honestly, doesn't bother me. Mostly it's either not important or can be checked against Urban Dictionary.

- Same here. But game 'benchmarks' do at least have better 'real world' application for most people.

- I don't game online either. After a couple of extended efforts, I've come to the conclusion that the world is filled with fuckheads, and I don't need that kind of shit when I'm trying to relax.

- Can't say I buy old machines of any stripe. Got enough trouble with buildup of my old ones without buying more.

- I rarely get any replies either, but more now than before. In my second year here, I considered changing my handle to ThreadEnder. ;P

Frankly, man, that would apply to just about all of those of us left. You need to be a bit of an oddball to hang around what most of the old guard consider a 'dying forum'.

God how I used to lust after the Amiga 1200 when I was younger, so sexy. A lust unfullfilled sadly though I do have a 500 (with genuine supereffective membrane keyboard), a 1000 and a 4000 hanging around here some bloody where.

As to fitting into the the forums apart from being opinionated and argumentative making an ass of yourself every now and then goes down well. ;{)

I am thinking of a dual system in a single case mod, so you sort of flick a switch and I go from PC to Amiga. I was going to do it with my mac mini but it was just easier to go hackintosh on a multi-boot, and it runs lots faster than the mini even on older hardware.
