I just crossed to the dark side!

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Just purchased my first Apple computer....a 21.5 inch entry level iMac. We own a couple of iPads and I have had an iPhone before, but never a Mac.

Purchased it for photo editing mainly, have Lightroom 5, Photoshop Elements 11 installed so far.

Anything else I should look to get? Especially interested in free apps, cause they are free. ;)

Tricky.

My usual install list is something like this for a new machine:

Chrome

BetterSnap Tool ($1.99) - Gives Windows 7 like snapping tools

VLC - Plays everything

Transmission - Bittorrent client

Virtualbox - Free virtual machine software for running light weight Windows apps

7zip - Unzip RAR files

That's all I can think of for the moment.

Don't get 7zip, get The Unarchiver. It's a drop-in replacement for the OS's built-in unzipping functionality, with support for heaps more formats.

The built-in text editor can be a bit silly at times, get Text Wrangler.

If you want system stats (CPU usage, RAM usage, etc) in the menu bar, get iStat Menus. It's not free, but it's by far the nicest looking stats widget for the menu bar. There are free ones, but they stick out like a sore thumb.

The built-in terminal app is good, but get iTerm, it's free and adds tabbed windows and other cool stuff.

Cog audio player. Efficient, and plays flac files. I love FB2K in windows, but there is no real equivalent for osx yet unfortunately.

Xact for audio conversion.

Mac The Ripper + Handbrake for DVD ripping and file compression.

Xee for image viewing.

Quicksilver. You will either love it or hate it. Allows you to launch programs via the keyboard key mappings.

Handbrake: For encoding videos
