Apparently the new Hawaii R9-290x benchmarks have been leaked and well they are no short of very very impressive. In summary it's faster than the GTX Titan at almost half the price. Benchmarks can be found here

Edit: The supposed successor to the 7850 looks pretty crazy and small? Cannot wait till they get announced.

Kinda curious my HD 5870 dies around the time this new generation is announced :-P

EDIT: And oh my, that HD 7850 sucessor looks bloody weird. Looking forward to the 25th though!

Just found this out now but that isn't the successor to the 7850 rather the successor to the 7750. Apparently it's going to have specifications closely resembling he 7850. Should be interesting, but again damn that's a pretty wicked looking card lol

I'm thinking it might be time to upgrade my system. A few gens down the track CPU wise and if those benchmarks are anything to go by, any Vesuvius/Tonga release will have my attention.

Though I really want to see progress made on the frame pacing front (namely DX9 support, 4k and eyefinity) before I commit to Radeons again.

must say star citizen looks rather promising

someone posted this im guessing its from the stream

R9 280X - 3GB GDDR5, $299, > 6800 in Firestrike

R9 270X - 2GB GDDR5, $199, > 5500 Firestrike

R7 260X - 2GB GDDR5, $139, > 3700 in Firestrike

R7 250 - 1GB GDDR5, < $89, > 2000 in 3DMark Firestrike

For the lower range of the R9 and indeed the R7, some are speculating that these are just re-brands of the HD 7**0 series cards. Only the R9 290, the 290X and as well the 260X will be brand new cards given the new Audiosound technology in it.

very possible since 6800 is about what a 7970 would get depending on the cpu

so 7970 for $299? very cool especially if they have tweaked it a bit like nvidia did with gtx680-gtx770 to improve efficency

apparently reviews got there cards today

and there is this

Pre-NDA for reviews ends third week of october, but exact date was not set at this moment. Will be announced in few days

the video above also mentions that r290x will be available for pre order with bf4 on oct 3 in limited availability so i wouldnt be surprised if we didnt see this in au although i wouldnt want to preorder it without seeing a review anyway

If that's the case, then technically, all 7970s can be flashed to be R9 280X if it is just a simple BIOS flash.

Nice link sora.

No mention of a dual GPU solution either, bit disappointed. My upgrade will have to wait...

Hmmm, there might be a bit of a twist in this. If AMD is indeed going GCN 2.0 instead of 1.0 which is what the 7**0 series was, then it should be similar but a different core all together in a sense. After all, Cape Verde was a GCN 2.0 card so the R9 280X and the R9 270X could be just Tahiti and Pitcairn version of the GCN 2.0 which should be a bit more efficient than the 1.0 versions.

Hmm I think sora might be right. AMD might actually be using the GCN 2.0 in their new cards as it will still be the same but different? I think they wouldn't just rehash their cards after almost 2 years of releasing their last set, rehashing and rebranding without tweaking them would be pretty silly but who knows? Still 7970 ghz edition at a $299 price point? Wow that's pretty insane, that slots it in line with the gtx 760.

I just hope the cards are not priced too highly (especially here in Australia).

Other than that, I can't wait. Even if performance is only incremental.

Been waiting to upgrade my Dad's PC for a while. The new card should come in handy when they arrive.

Not like this announcement makes your card crap, it's just the continual progress of technology. If you wait for the next best thing you'll always be waiting.

Is it worth waiting for these new cards or just getting what is out now? (as I am looking at getting a new PC)

If I wasn't under water, I would sell this Titan just for the fun of playing with the new AMD cards!

should have grabbed a universal block ;)

but then maybe its better that you didnt since swapping from a titan might be a little crazy

well i was totally wrong about them dropping the price of current cards typically they dont change but i guess with them bringing in a revision of current cards at a much lower price point...

7970 is on special for $329 at pccg

which is probably not far of the price that we should see r280 at in au if stock is sufficient

I was going to buy that 7970 at pccg. Should I get that or wait for r280? And roughly how long until they are available to buy?
