GPU advice needed

Recommended Posts

For soem time I've been putting up with an intermittent black screen problem.

I've:

1. tried updating the ATI CCC to the latest version

2. checked if the graphics card has new firmware to download but didn't find any on the Sapphire website

4. run memtest and the RAM is fine

5. logged the GPU and CPU temperature/fan speed/load leading up to the black screen problem and these normal

6. tried HDMI and DVI connections/cables

7. run a benchmarking run using heaven without any card issues

The black screens seem to be completely random - sometimes during intense gaming and sometimes with little apparent screen action.

I don't have another machine/GPU card to trial so I'm now considering an RMA for the video card before the warranty expires. I've been told the usual turnaround time for Sapphire is about 2 weeks.

Looking for advice on whether there are other things I should try before next step.

Also thinking about buying a new graphics card and giving up on the Sapphire - budget <$500 - and suggestions about what to get? (Current card is Sapphire HD7870 GHz Edition OC 2GB) http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/p...=1487&leg=0

One option would be to get a second/new identical card for around $250 and RMA the original card. Assuming it comes back all good then crossfire.

Second option is abandon the 7870 and spend up to $500 on a better single card

Third option is to find out the problem is something other than the card and fix that

What do you think?

i would try reinstalling windows before sending the card away and installing the latest non beta driver

as a fresh start is often the easiest way to fix gremlins

have you tried a fur stress test like the one in occt? they will push the card harder but it doesnt sound like that kinda problem

might be worth trying to underclock the cards core and memory ~20% and see if it makes any difference

if you dont feel like reinstalling windows just yet atiman uninstaller may be worth a try http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=381150&page=9

Thanks for the suggestions Dasa - sounds like you think it is driver issue rather than the card - is there a history of ATI drivers not installing correctly if previous driver has been present? I've updated CCC twice since rebuilding the machine however the black screen was present from the original install.

What about the monitor? Are you certain the monitor itself is fine?

Do you have a spare monitor or even TV that you can connect to temporarily as a test?

sorry i had forgotten there was a glitch with early 7870 that would create a black screen and since you have had the problem since day one either rma it if its one of these models

https://www.sapphireforum.com/showthread.ph...een-quot-issues

http://www.techpowerup.com/174858/some-sap...reen-issue.html

or update the cards bios yourself http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=377171

the problem with video drivers installation is more if you havent removed previous drivers and if any of them were beta drivers then there is a chance of problems and sometimes windows itself just gets screwed up

Thanks Dasa. I haven't installed any beta drivers - only release versions. I had a look at the articles and my card is not in the SKU range they refer to however there is another post on the Sapphire forum that refers to similar issues with my SKU series. Now thinking RMA is the way to go.

2 weeks without the GPU is a pain so might have to purchase new card in any case....Any suggestions?

id say you would be very lucky if it was resolved inside of two weeks but at least you could run on the igp till it gets back it would limit your gaming though

gigabyte 7950 oc $299

7970 $369

or since you have put up with the card this long if there is enough time before warranty expires wait and see what amd has for us in the next month or so if your lucky you may be able to get the 7950 replacement for ~$500 or maybe nvidia will drop the gtx780 price to ~$500 some time after this release

gigabyte the brand of choice?

have some friends with the gigabyte 7950 and they were fairly happy with them although they did get one or two doa they also had problems with msi and asus cards

the gb 7950 is the highest clocked 7950 available it has a nice quiet hsf and its fairly cheap

like asus and maybe msi? it has a 3 year warranty unlike most the other brands which are 2 year

my 7970 are asus and his

Having looked at the options and performance vs the 7870 I'm now thinking the ASUS 7970 3GB Overclocked TOP edition (HD7970-DC2T-3GD5) or the Gigabyte GV-R797TO-3GD HD 7970 GHz Edition might be the go. Reviews on the Gigabyte suggest it could be a bit noisy. Other option is the Gigabyte ATI HD7970 OC Edition which is $100 less than the other two cards. Sounds like the new AMD cards have been announced so might hold off for a few weeks to see if the prices come down.
