Monthly data quota restriction?

Recommended Posts

I want to be able to limit Internet data on a monthly basis per IP address or MAC address or username. How can I do this?

Several ways spring to mind.

Use a managed switch that allows for quotas (generally expensive). See if any of the Linux firewall/router distros support what you want and set that up on a old low end PC as the router/firewall.

Get a router that supports Gargoyle.

You have to have a router that's on this list

http://www.gargoyle-router.com/wiki/doku.p..._tested_routers to use Gargoyle.

Take particular note of the router version numbers too.

Use a router that has this sort of functionality built in. I think the Ubiquiti EdgeMAX Edgerouter Lite and Ubiquiti EdgeMAX EdgeRouter can do this.

http://www.ubnt.com/edgemax and they are not too expensive

Can't seem to find anything about quotas on the Edgemax docs.

An alternative is to use some sort of hotspot control system on the network like is used in net cafes etc.
