Just a vent about shutting down windows...

Recommended Posts

I dont know if any one else experiences this from time to time.

I run my computer pretty much 24/7 and dont turn it off, i do turn off the monitor.speakers etc.. but the PC stays on.

Before i leave it to go to work or wherever, i go to start, little arrow next to Shut down(updates) and press LOCK.

Sometimes in my haste i accidently press Log off or sometimes worse, shutdown.

Thing is, of all the times Windows PC's prompt you to confirm your action, "are you sure you want to save this file?" etc...

The one time when you might have unsaved work or 20 webpages open it will just shut down.

Surely it could just have a simple prompt like: "Are you sure?" It would be nice.

Anyway, it generally isnt that big a deal, most stuff saves it self, browser can be re-opended etc..

But if you are in a work flow of sorts and you do it, it can really break your stride and frustrate you. If it had been prompting me for the last 10 years i would probably be complaining about that.

Thats what you get for using a mouse, my friend.

Why not make a quick shortcut on the desktop to lock\logoff, so you dont even need to go into the start menu and risk it.

Much the same. I never really understood leaving your PC on 24/7.

It makes the room far too hot, and gains nothing.

Keeps the bugs out.

PC doesn't run hot when it's doing nothing.

Makes the heater turn on less often in winter!

Some people have tasks running on their PCs which require it is left on, most often my PC is doing something so it's running, but if it's not doing anything it's switched off to save power and heat. Setting up a separate low power/heat server to run 24/7 with files and media allows me to turn the PC off a lot more often when not in use.

In relation to the OP though, as others have said, windows + L is your friend. Another good one is windows + E (opens a new explorer window) and there are many more you could really save yourself a lot of mouse clicking about. :)
