SquallStrife 508 Posted April 13, 2014 (edited) (OK maybe not) http://tech.slashdot.org/story/14/04/13/14...ng-out-of-money "The GNOME Foundation is running out of money. The foundation no longer has any cash reserves so they have voted to freeze non-essential funding for running the foundation. They are also hunting down sponsors and unpaid invoices to regain some delayed revenue. Those wishing to support the GNOME Foundation can become a friend of GNOME." And let's not even mention the Executive Director that came on, spent 1/4 or more of the foundation's money on pet political projects, then bailed. But nah, seriously, it'd be a real shame if the disappeared. My experiences with Gnome desktop have always been positive, also choice is always good. smakme7757 37 Posted April 16, 2014 It's a shame unfortunately. One of the little known truths about "Free software". One has to wonder what would happen to Firefox if Google cut their funding.
Xen 173 Posted April 17, 2014 And let's not even mention the Executive Director that came on, spent 1/4 or more of the foundation's money on pet political projects, then bailed. That's a very civil way of putting it compared to the thoughts on a lot of /. users.
sponger 0 Posted April 19, 2014 One has to wonder what would happen to Firefox if Google cut their funding. It would be fine, because Firefox haven't made shit decisions and then completely ignored their users.
smakme7757 37 Posted April 22, 2014 (edited) One has to wonder what would happen to Firefox if Google cut their funding. It would be fine, because Firefox haven't made shit decisions and then completely ignored their users. Nearly all of Mozillas revenue is from the inbuilt search engine promotion in their browser. With Google being their No.1 sponsor they would loose a massive chunk of their income. From a quick search, an older source, but most likely still relevant today: "Mozilla today released its annual financial report for 2012, and while revenue is up quite substantially, the organization's reliance on Google continues to grow. In 2011, 85 percent of Mozilla's revenue came from Google. In 2012, the figure increased to 90 percent." Source Unfortunately even the nicest developers still want to get paid. They have to eat as well! If Firefox OS takes off them maybe they can start turning more of a profit from their own products, but until then they need to keep their sponsors onboard. Master_Scythe 521 Posted May 2, 2014 Its a funny thing isnt it? Really I think Linux users are the most far from freeloaders ever. They give unlimited time and support to any noob, and a lot of their time to ironing out bugs. Money is not the only thing of value to determine 'freeloader'. Unfortunately, for projects to survive they do need funding... so I guess its more "Linux users time rich, money poor"
